I was not sure what to expect based on reviews but I went in the museum when in Mainz. I thought it was quite interesting and was worth an hour or so. There are several floors of exhibits on printing with quite a bit of English descriptions. There are original Gutenberg bibles and many other old printed books and bibles. We saw a demo on how the printing press worked but it was in a German.

“Not worth it for budget travelers”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 May 2014

Exactly what the title says. Visited in January. I'm coming from southern california desert so I decided to pay the admission to come in here to duck out from the cold. But really wasn't worth the entrance fee. They don't let you take any pictures and the exhibits are really limited in scope and quantity. They do have an original guttenberg bible, but I believe there are 12 other copies, so when I found this out it took a lot out of the uniqueness from this museum. They do have student admission price but if you are a budget traveller I recommend skipping this place. You can view the museum in an hour and all that does will really just sidetrack you if you have other pressing venues on your itinerary.

“Experience how the press works and view major historical items”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2014

If time is short the key points to include are the demonstration of using the press and the vault.

The demonstration is a must see to learn and understand how the printing press worked and the vault contains fascinating historical items. If you have more time there are many other items of interest to view and learn about.

Photos are allowed for the demonstration but not in vault or other places where light/flash sensitive books are located.

The shop has quality gifts and it is well worth including time to look.
