“Best Value in Mainz”
Reviewed 7 April 2011

This hotel is a real gem. Clean, well-maintained, reasonably priced and friendly staff. Located right across from the Mainz central railway station, it is convenient to everything in Mainz. The staff were very friendly and accomodating. The rooms on the 6th (top) floor have a great view and are spacious and comfortable.Wireless internet service was fast and reliable. The breakfast is excellent, with good variety of pastries, fruit, cheeses and cerals. Hot food included eggs and veal sausages. Best of all, the price for all this is very reasonable.

We had to be in Frankfurt for Heimtextil exhibition for 4 nights. Found out about Top Hammer hotel from trip adviser. Newly refurbished noiseless rooms. Across the street from the main train station which has frequent and convenient train connections to Frankfurt (40 minutes) and other cities. This hotel is especially suitable for Ryanair travellers as the bus to Mainz from Hahn airport literally drops passengers at the door step of this hotel. Staff is extremely helpful and polite. The breakfast is lavish and high speed internet is free. I forgot fre e Sauna for the hotel guests. You just cannot beat the val ue. The city of Mainz is friendly with lots of shopping and food choices.

We stayed at the Hotel Hammer during a one night layover in Frankfurt. After exploring options in Frankfurt and by the airport, a one night stay in Mainz seemed appealing because it was a short (30 minutes) and inexpensive (3.90 euros) train ride on the S8 from the airport and had a nice central area to walk around. The Hotel Hammer was literally across the street from the train station in Mainz which met our needs. Our room was cozy, but comfortable with a double bed that was really two single beds together (not uncommon in Europe). There was an LCD television and a nice bathroom with a shower stall. There is also free internet which the front desk provides an access code for.

The hotel is a short walk from the central square in Mainz. We took a walk to the St. Stephan church in the early morning which was a pleasant 12 minute walk. This is where the Chagall windows are, but the church is not open until 10am. Finally, the hotel has a hearty and free breakfast offering with cold cuts, bread, cheese, eggs and bacon and various juices. All in all, a very pleasant stay at the Hammer!

We're so, so grateful we stumbled upon this little gem - we were victims of the Winter 2010 travel weather, and rather than trying to find accommodations near Frankfurt Airport, we chose to spend a night at the Hammer Hotel and rest up before tackling return flights to the North American West Coast. The staff superseded all our expectations -- they were personal, friendly with our kids, knowledgeable about anything and everything, without being intrusive. The rooms were, indeed, non-smoking; the windows shut out any noise from the main Mainz train station across the street, but we were so taken with the view of said train station with its tiny Christmas market and lights in the heavy snow fall that we all stood before open windows, mesmerized. The small service and decorative details that set this hotel apart from chains helped us channel that Christmas feeling we'd been missing during our trip. The proximity of the Mainz train station (direct ICE service to FRA Airport in under half an hour!) is an additional plus. The hotel staff packed us awesome lunch packets (with special treats for the kids!) that literally sustained is throughout our next-day ordeal at FRA Airport.

Thank you for making our last night in Germany memorable and welcoming us with open arms!

I've stayed in this hotel twice in the last ten years, once with children and recently alone. The rooms and bathroom are a decent size by European standards. The breakfast buffet was very good with plenty of choices and the only hot rolls that I was served during my visit to 4 different German hotels on my trip. Despite being across the street from the train station, the room was quiet. The hotel is within walking distance of the shopping area and other attractions in Mainz. It's easy to get to the Frankfurt airport from Mainz, so this hotel is a good choice if you've just arrived or are about to leave Germany. You can catch the S-Bahn or a regular train every few minutes to the airport, and it's only about 20-30 minutes. I find that Mainz is a much safer place to stay overnight than downtown Frankfurt. The staff were very helpful.

If you travel a lot, you come to realize that the difference between an OK hotel and an above-average one comes down not to bricks-and-mortar but to the staff-commitment. The Hotel Hammer is a perfect example where the staff makes all the difference. I am currently in the final evening of a 5 night stay. I made a reservation at this hotel based in large part on the Trip Advisor recommendations and I have been very pleased.
A few days before arriving, I received a personal email asking whether the reservation was still current and if I had any special requests. Upon writing that I would arrive early in the day following an overnight flight from the US, they responded that a room would be ready an waiting; and it was - so I had a nice nap in the afternoon rather that waiting for the room to be prepared.
Each of the staff knew who I was the instant I checked in, and I was always greeted every morning at breakfast and when I arrived in the evenings from my conference. The location is excellent, literally right across the street from the train station, and they offered to move me to a bigger room following me second night after a tour group checked out.
Summary; solid 3 star hotel, not elegant but quite comfortable hotel with a great location, and an excellent staff. Given the many annoyances that once can face when traveling, you could do A LOT worse than this. I was very happy here.

The Hotel Hammer is a wonderful hotel located steps away from the Mainz main train station, yet it it is a very calm and restful place. The hotel has very attractive facilities, a wonderful breakfast buffet, and decent sized rooms. The strong suit of this hotel, however, is its personnel. We have stayed in the hotel many times, and almost every time there has been something special they have helped us with, from saving left behind items for our return to helping us navigate the German customs service and UPS in a very complex matter involving the receipt of a important item that was left behind in the US. Ilona sent several faxes and made numerous phone calls in helping us resolve the problem. We have traveled quite a bit in Europe and have stayed in many hotels, but the Hotel Hammer is the place where we are truly at home. Thank you, Ilona and Inka!
