“Surprisingly Good!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 November 2010

Having previously stayed at more upmarket hotels here in less austere times (Novotel, Hyatt Regency), I have become accustomed to a very comfortable time in Mainz - my favorite place to stay when working in this part of Germany. I was pleasantly surprised by the Ibis, with an airy modern reception, adequately proportioned room and most importantly, a full-size bathroom (shower). Several Ibis I have stayed at recently (Heidelberg & Tours Central spring to mind) have the smallest wedge-shaped bathrooms imaginable, but this is just fine. The breakfast buffet provides adequate choice with friendly staff. The parking garage is under the hotel and very convenient. The hotel is a short (5-10 minutes) walk into the Altstadt with no shortage of bars and restaurants to choose from in very pleasant surroundings. A clean and comfortable alternative to the upmarket lodging choices in Mainz, when passing through on business.

The staff was rude and inconsiderate of the family member that was handicaped. They placed us on the forth floor and when the fire alarm went off at 1AM on 3rd floor all I could think of is how are we going to get this handicaped person down the stairs. We paid for 5 hours of wireless internet and only used up 1 hour and then lost it if you do not use it in the immediate 5 hours. No restaurant in hotel just breakfast. Beds were hard with small pillows. Overall experience in this hotel was the worst hotel we stayed at during our whole vacation.

Very easy to reach from autobahn A60, and very easy to leave towards frankfurt/koln.
Rooms are good for " IBIS style ", simple, not very spacious but not too compact.
Walking distance to center and touristic areas. several bus lines close to hotel.

I've stayed in some 20 Ibis hotels over the years, and I pretty much know what to expect. This one is much the same as the rest, EXCEPT that the advertised airconditioning is non-existant. Not even the pretense of the fan running, recirculating the warm air, but at least helping to cover up the noise from outside. They did give us a small desk fan that was worthless.

Seeing all the open windows as we walked up to check in, I inquired and was told the air was out of order. It was to be fixed in 2 days. Just incidently, the very day we were scheduled to check out. Unfortunately, we hadn't seen the recent Trip Advisor reviews from July reporting this same problem.

There were three reasons I picked this hotel. Location, price, and air conditioning. The first was fine. Only a 3 minute walk from the Roman Theatre metro/train station. Which had frequent connections to the Main train station. And a 5 miinute walk from the Old Town. The 79 Euro price for two was quite low for Germany, even with the room being tiny and bare basic.

But whether one is told the air is just out for 3 days, or 6 weeks as a previous reviewer was told, it's quite clear what they are up to. They will keep saying the air will be fixed soon, until October, when it will be cold out and no one will care. Then start the same scam over again next summer.

If you leave the window open, not only is there much traffic noise, but the bar directly across the street will keep you awake until 2 am. We were able to stay only because of the unusually cold and rainy weather, and our reluctance to spend our time searching for another hotel. But I would never risk booking here again during the warm weather months. Had it been sunny and hot out, the room would have been unbearable.

We had a difficult time checking in, as the man on the front desk (who looked fairly senior) did not know that students with an ISIC card are entitled to free breakfast, despite directing him to the IBIS website which proved this. (Much later, another female staff member confirmed the free breakfast). Then we found that the airconditioning in our rooom was not working (it was 34 C late afternoon in Mainz). When we informed another person at the desk, he just said "it's defective", shrugged his shoulders, and turned away. Later the first man gave us a fan (defective too!).

IBIS promises to fix a problem within 15 minutes, or you will be their guest. Of course this promise was never kept. The staff did not seem to care, and no compensation was offered. The reception area was fully airconditioned so the IBIS staff were fine.
Fortunately we stayed only 1 night. We feel sorry for the guests who were staying longer.

The old city is about 20 minutes walk from the city centre. In hindsight we would have booked a hotel near the city or railway station, rather than having to catch the bus to this IBIS hotel.
