this Dome is said to be the oldest church in Germany, although I have heard this about others around Germany, Most of it was open for viewing, one can walk freely though it, or take a tour.

this cathedral is central located and no vehicular traffic. Lots of shops around and the famous Altstadt is just around the corner. Don`t wear your heels .. loads of cobblestones. Gutenberg museum is close too. Such an enjoyable place to visit.
Great places Cafe`s close by to sit and enjoy something to eat or just people watch.
I love to sit in the church and just take it all in...the windows are just gorgeous and the architecture is breathtaking.

I am not religious, so tend to visit churches and cathedrals for the architecture and artwork. Mainz cathedral did not let me down, it was a very interesting and atmospheric building. In sharp contrast to Cologne cathedral that we had visited just a few days before, the simpler style of this building accentuated the beauty of the stained windows (which were in a much more modern style than the sturdy building itself) and didn't overwhelm with overly intricate stone-masonary. We visited on a Saturday, when Mainz's vibrant market was in full flow immediately outside, but the interior of the building was still a haven of peace. Well worth a visit if you're in town and only a short walk to the Rhine afterwards.
