A very pleasant and comfortable hotel which is very close to the Cathedral and Guttenberg Museum. Friendly service and good food in the courtyard. (the weather was warm- there is an interior Wienstubbe). Our experience differs from those above in that I only have a few words of German but the lady in charge was still very welcoming and spoke excellent English. My email booking was answered in English. The wine was excellent, too!

This place is a few moments walk from the Dom (cathedral) square and is atmospheric if a little dark. Our room window looked directly up at the Dom bell tower so it felt like we'd slipped back to the middle ages...but in a good way!!
The room was fine...the breakfast hearty with the usual selection of breads and cold meats, cheese and eggs etc.
The Dom bells were a bit noisy as they began ringing at 6 am but then seemed to stop again til about at 8 am from which point they rang every 15 minutes so not for the light-sleeper who wants a lie-in!

Room Tip: Bring ear plugs for the bells!

I have stayed at this hotel many times and would not consider another hotel in Mainz. The breakfast is ample and good and the meals in the restaurant are excellent. Drink the world's best white wine. I find the service friendly and efficient. This could be because I speak German. I wonder why others have not been pleased with the sevice. The explanation could be that the English of the staff is not good. Germans also do not behave and and are not polite in the same way as people from the English speaking world. I think that all Germans could have friendlier everyday manners.

It was a nice stay in Mainz. The hotel is about 10 mins walk from the train station. It was very easy to find on foot but wouldn't be if we had lots of luggage. The hotel was a lovely old pub with accommodation above. The hotel part seemed to be quite busy but the restaurant wasn't, which was strange as the food there was very good, in-fact we decided to eat there a second night and loved that experience too. Breakfast was good too, with breads, meats, juice, coffee, eggs all very satisfactory.
The room was large and very nicely decorated. the bed was very comfortable and everything was clean and working well.
We only have a few concerns about recommending this hotel but they are rather minor. The bathroom drains were a little smelly, but it is an old building. I emailed prior to arriving to find out the best way to get to the hotel and I had no reply, later to find out the owners don't speak much english. and that may also why they didn't seem over friendly.
I would possibly stay here again as I loved the location.

We stayed at Hof-Ehrenfels on Grebenstrasse on December 16, 2004. For 95 Euros for two - three people including breakfast (cold cuts, cheese, bread, coffee, juice - no yogurt or eggs) it was an okay deal considering the location which was three blocks from the Christkindel market if you can overlook the horrible parking, dingy room, and rude staff.

There was no parking on the one way, narrow street by the hotel. The hotel parking is several streets away in an unmarked parking garage. We never found the garage and after being lost for over an hour, we decided to pay ourselves to park in a parking lot near the hotel, although that took another 15-20 minutes of driving around and waiting for a space to open up.

The room was dark with 70's style pressed wood laminate furniture and the room had a dark, brownish haze to it. The mattress consisted of three cushions over the fake wood bed frame. The bathroom was a good size and clean with the hardest towels in the world - stiff and rough.

The staff was uncaring and short handed the night and day we were there. We waited over 15 minutes to get a menu at the restaurant although two German ladies who sat down got there menus immediately then we were finally brought our menus. The tomato soup was very salty. The salad was big.

When I checked out, I told the lady we never found the garage after driving around, and she treated me as if I were stupid. I told her it would have been helpful to have a sign on the garage saying it was for parking for the hotel, and she scornfully told me that there is a sign for parking inside the garage (a lot of help that does when you are driving past it at night) and the building was white (which were were not told that previous night anyways).

Out of my 12 days in Germany, this was the only negative hotel experience and I wanted to pass the word along. We would never stay there again!
