“History towering over you”
Reviewed 24 June 2014

standing next to this is amazing...seeing how it has changed colors over the years from the smoke of the fires and how it towers over even my big boys is fascinating.

“Spectacular View of Trier”
Reviewed 19 June 2014

The Porta Nigra is a must-see while visiting Trier. At first glance, it does not appear as if there is much to see, however, once you climb up to one of the top levels, the view is absolutely gorgeous. Trier may not have breathtaking views like some major cities, but the view from the Porta Nigra will give you an idea of what the Romans may have seen.

Photography from the top of the gate is definitely worth it, but do remember that the gate is not open at night so you won't be able to do night time photography from the top. There's always a large crowd near the gate, so I recommend getting there early (near sunrise) or taking pictures in the late evening hours.

Walking up the tower is fairly easy, but it is not disabled-friendly. While paying a small fee to go up the gate, make sure you grab an information pamphlet from the ticket agent. This will undoubtedly help you understand the history behind the gate and its importance to the city of Trier in ancient times as well as the Middle Ages.

“Oldest Roman attraction North of the Alps”
Reviewed 18 June 2014

In Germany's oldest city, the Porta Nigra ("Black Gate") stands as an ancient gateway to the city of Trier. The massive structure marks the start of the pedestrian zone and what would have been the ancient main road of Trier.

Completely intact, Porta Nigra is open on all levels. The views from third floor are impressive as you can see the Trier cathedral. Your entry fee also pays for the visit to the Roman museum at Porta Nigra. One wall of the museum is an actual remnant of the medieval city walls. To have this much Roman history preserved north of the Alps is absolutely tremendous. Do not miss Porta Nigra!

“Very eye catching”
Reviewed 10 June 2014

We came here on a day trip from Luxembourg hoping to see some history and were not disappointed. this gate was a really stunning work of architecture and very eye catching. Also really interesting is how it is right in the middle of the modern shops and high street. Very cool!
