Owner description: The ruins of a huge second-century amphitheater, one of the largest in the entire Roman Empire.

Easy to take yourself back in time when visiting. The substructio is creepy and awesome. An hour is plenty of time to poke around and see everything. They have a free parking lot.

They had this neat exhibit or guy wearing old roman clothes talking up a storm. Everybody was quite interested. unfortunately, it was all in German!

It was interesting to go beneath the surface of the amphitheater and see the pits and support columns. This is nothing like the Coliseum in Rome, but for a starter it is quite good. The exhibit gives a nice pamphlet that tells all about the sight.

This was an unexpected find! Trier, Germany is one of our favorite cities in the world. The history here is incredible and while much smaller, it competes with Rome as a must place to visit. We have been to Trier over a dozen times, and use it as a base when we travel Germany.

The amphitheater dates back to when Trier was a Roman capital in the 2nd century. The arena had a seating capacity close to 20,000.

Below the amphitheater is a "basement" where, hundreds of years ago, Romans held prisoners sentenced to death. They also kept wild animals such as African lions and Asian tigers.

You can actually go below the arena and explore the underground "prison". A crude type of elevator brought "performers" up to the arena for the final fight for life.

The Roman amphitheater is a nice place to go and Visit. You can walk across the whole theatre, walk through the vaults and climb up the stairs to the seating areas. A great view when reached. You can just imagine the arena full with spectators and the gladiators fighting in the ring. well worth a visit .
