The folks in Trier have been very proud of their cathedral for hundreds of years. It is quite an architectural feat.

One of the largest cathedrals in central Germany, the Dom of Trier is home to the Holy Robe and one of the nails used in the crucifixion of Christ. Started in 326 a.d. by the EMperor Constantine, the massive Dom complex highlights extraordinary relics and depictions of Christianity throughout the entire complex.

You will want to consider spending a little time here as there are many chapels, artistic works, and architectural wonders in this complex. Most impressive is the crypt where many Bishops of Trier are interred. Timing a visit during the pilgrimage times is ideal; however, the Holy Robe pilgrimages occur every 15-20 years and occur randomly (no set pattern or dates); therefore, you can only catch a glimpse of the robe in it's encasement within a secured chapel behind the alter.

As the oldest church in Germany, this should be on anyone's must see list on a trip to central Germany.

Words can not describe seeing this structure. The perfection of every carving, the beauty in the faces of the statues, the organs, the gardens out back....it is amazing how old these buildings are and they are immaculate.

“Impressive architecture”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2014

If you're a fan of architecture, you can't miss St. Peter's Cathedral. It's not only impressive, but also full of interesting details. Initially, I was looking for shelter from the rain, but ended up wandering in the building for about 45 minutes, inspecting the elaborate interior. Remember to look up, but also remember to look down and try to notice as many details as possible. It's a truly fascinating place.

fascinating church with historic relic, the seamless robe of Christ; interesting and not that busy; most visitors were in the streets shopping.
