“Avoid if not German speaking”

Stadtrundfahrt Dresden
Ranked #6 of 49 Tours in Dresden

This company discriminates against the non-German speaking tourists. It is too difficult to hear other language commentary through the headphones as German is loudly broadcast via speakers throughout the bus. Also the driver made no effort to smooth the ride so it was bumpy, jolting and uncomfortable. We'd recently been on the Budapest hop on, hop off tour and it was excellent. All languages were only available via the headphones; the bus driver was considerate and the drive both comfortable and informative. If Dresden wants the tourist $$ they need to review the Stadtrundfahrt.

Bus is old and bumpy, the top is covered so it gets quite hot when sitting still, the live German-speaking guide is boring and lifeless, the English-recorded audio guide is difficult to hear with the cheap head phones they give you, they drive around the same route a few times in the beginning and they stop for too long at certain stops waiting for people who aren’t there. There were a couple interesting points but overall I found it to be a dull waste of time and not worth the 20 euro ticket price.

We went on the boat trip as it had English as well as German commentary. The English one was far briefer than the German one and was difficult to understand as the sound was quite low. We passed many sights that we wondered what they were such as a funicular railway that appeared closed, lots of interesting houses and buildings that were just not commented on at all. I am sure that they could improve it greatly so they would receive better reviews than this one! It was nice to see Dresden from a different view point but could have been so much better. Lunch and drinks were available which we hadn't realised so better publicity would help them

This bus takes you to all the important places that a tourist must visit in thr city of Dresden. The bus service starts from various places at various time. One can choose different time slots, they offer. Also, sitting on the upper seats give great view of the city.

We took bus from Neumarkt and it costed around 22 Euro for entire day. There is no restriction to use same bus. One can spend as much time as they want at an attraction and take next avaikable bus(as ling you have ticket).

After buying our tickets at the tourist info in the central train station, we were a bit disappointed when we tried to board but were turned away – too many tourists were taking in the sights on the Saturday morning in early August. One of the many friendly ticket sellers advised us to go to the central stop at the Theaterplatz an der Augustusbrücke for a better chance to get on, where we did indeed get a seat on the next double-decker bus.

Since the weather was so beautiful, we opted for postponing museum and church interiors until our next visit and for seeing the sights in the glorious sunshine. The Big Discoverer Tour was perfect for showing us around the historic part of the city including some of the surrounding sights like the Transparent Volkswagen Factory. We also got a panoramic view of the three Elbschlösser (Elbe castles/palaces) from across the river and a look at the very controversial Walschlösschen bridge just before its official opening, the new bridge across the Elbe was responsible for the Dresden Elbe Valley losing its special UNESCO World Heritage status.

After lunch back in the city we used our same reasonably priced ticket to go to the Pillnitz quarter in the eastern part of Dresden. Our bus driver cum tour guide, a proud Dresdener, provided us with witty and interesting details about the city and its history on the journey there and back and also took us on a tour of the Chinese-style palaces and the beautiful Baroque garden and park with its huge ancient camellia tree, a tree so valuable that it has its own huge movable glass house that can be wheeled over to protect it in winter.

Our tickets were also good for the evening tour along the same route through the old part of the city (without the extended trip along the Elbe) with the beautifully lit Dresden skyline as backdrop.

As others have mentioned in reviews here, the live commentary by the charming bus drivers cum tour guides was in German only with recorded information available in other languages. For those who know some German, the tour is wonderfully entertaining with humorous anecdotes and insightful details that vary depending on your driver and guide – so much better than other similar bus tours we’d taken in Madrid, Valencia, and especially much better than the tour we had in Munich.

Our only regret was not being able to take the tour more than just twice and not being able to extend our day ticket to a second day for just an additional two euros. But Dresden deserves more than just one visit, so upon our return, we’ll be heading for an encore of our wonderful Dresden Stadtrundfahrt tour.
