“Neumarkt - the formerly Altmarkt”
Review of Neumarkt

for me is too modern - because it is now a broad Avenue with hotels and shops. But I saw a lot of pictures of the Altmarkt - my grandgrandfather was one of those who constructed it I was told. This old place was also completely destroyed by the bombing of Dresden.

you can really feel the centuries old beauty preserved in time when you are here, just simply beautiful old buildings, monuments, fountains, museums, churches and people from different parts of the world. it is best if you have a bike to go around, its beauty never faded, truly an icon of Dresden.

The square is beautiful, with most of the buildings having been restored while keeping their character. There's also an archaeological dig site where you can see some of the old ruins. At night, sit outside at one of the restaurants, have a beer, and enjoy the street performers.

There has been loads of controversy about the re-build of this innercity square - some people would have liked it to have stayed empty - others wanted modern buildings - befitting the times but in the end they re-build but the style looks very much the way this square looked before the war. I personally like it - it is colourful and frames the Frauenkirche rather nicely. There are restaurants and hotels with outside sitting - something that had been missing from the centre of town until now.

When in Dresden - walk around the Neumarkt and explore all the hidden alleys and small streets.

We visit Germany a lot. This time we took a 2 hours bus from Prague (with Student Agency bus service).

Each time we visit this country, we are amazed how the Germans are carefully restoring their stunning city centers.

The history books tell us that Dresden Neumarkt was the main area bombed heavily during the last months of World War II, leaving hundreds of thousands wounded or homeless and killing about 25,000 civilians. Except for a small monument called Großer trauernder Mann (The big mourning man), there's no clue for the horror. Also, during the DDR era (East Germany), this place was neglected. No clue for that either. The city looks like nothing ever happened. The German authorities did a remarkable job restoring the buildings, pavements and monuments. In all due honor - this is the most beautiful city-center we encountered in all of Germany.

As every market in Germany, it also offers you many shops, cafes and restaurants.
Within walking distance can reach the bank of the Elbe river. Also, don't miss the two mountain railways (Schwebebahn and Standseilbahn) which are located 15 minutes tram ride from Neumarkt.
