Description: Welcome to the Gunpowder Tower! Originally built in 1565, the tower formed an important part of Dresden's fortifications, and, as its name suggests, was used to store gunpowder safely in the ground - it was a pretty explosive place back then! You will find the restaurant in the historical centre of dresden in the vaultet ceilings of the "Coselpalais" next to "Frauenkirche". The Pulverturm with a total of 400 seats is open daily from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. As you dine beneath the vaulted ceilings of the Marshal de Saxe Room, or the Russian or Turkish vault, you will experience a part of the history of Saxony while enjoying a truly royal saxon dining experience. Of course, your table will have a sumptious basket of oven-fresh breads from the Arsenal Bakery, just a few yards away. This is also where the court patissier creates sweet delicacies for dessert. Perhaps Milord and Milady would fancy a juicy suckling pig or other rustic dishes prepared before your eyes in our open-air kitchen, along with your choice of ice-cold german beer or delicious local wines. You may even be tempted to buy some plunder from the strolling sutler! The "Condemned Man's Last Meal" served in the dungeon, of course, is an unforgettable experience. Our lovely maidens and brave grenadiers will serve you delicacies. Throughout the evening, strolling magicians will ensure nonstop merriment and diversion. Last but not least you should not miss out on the famous funnel drinking, called "Dresdner Trichtertrinken".

We here with a group of about 30 relatives (German and English) and had a room to ourselves (the Turkish room). It was an ideal venue for such an occasion. We were kept entertained by strolling accordion players and magicians, and the staff were all delightful. The food, wine and beer were all very good (although I would have appreciated a little more suckling pig and a little less 'fillers'). Although we came with a large group my impression was that it would be a good place to eat in a much smaller party.

I fancied some local specialities. Given that Pulverturm has some good reviews at Tripadvisor and is highly recommended by my guidebook, I'd high expectations.

The Saxon potato soup with roasted sausage slices was alright. At least it's hot enough for my taste.

The Dresdner Sauerbraten came in a huge portion. The beef was tender but the dish tasted so strong and heavy that I only finished the beef and left most of the red cabbage and potato dumpling.

The Dresdner Eierschecke was a total disappointment. It's way too dry and didn't taste special at all.

The service was extremely fast and I was done with my dinner in an hour. When I paid, I noted there's a tip of 3 euros on the bill. I don't mind tipping at all and in fact do tip generally. But I just didn't like the idea that a tip of a fixed amount was obligatory.

Overall a poor dining experience.

Enjoyable medieval setting with delicious food and friendly attentive waitress, felt lucky to get a table on Easter Sunday. Staff explained the choices and it was good to see the fresh preparation of the eierschecke! Just wish we had bought some of the amazing beer glasses they were selling too!
