“Superb hotel - go there if you can!”
Reviewed 28 June 2014

Excellent location right in the heart of Liepzig so we were able in just one overnight 24 hour stay to visit the major sights on foot including attending a concert in a smaller room at the Gewandhaus booked by the hotel (only 12 Euros per ticket). Our car was valet-parked for not much more than the overnight car park rate and was waiting for us outside the main entrance 24 hours later - with a complimentary bottle of water for the journey.
Finding it was easy using the satnav but to actually get to it we had to ask a very helpful receptionist at the Marriott Hotel nearby where our satnav gave up - lots of temporary roadworks blocked off the road.
The room was superb with heavy doors and thick walls so we were not even aware of any other guests. Bathroom the best ever - 3 separate rooms so the shower and toilet were completely partitioned off from the main bath and basin section. The view from our top floor looking out over the small square at the back of the Rathaus was splendid and we were able to go out onto the mini balcony to view the scene next to stone carvings of cupids on horses.
As breakfast was quite expensive we ate in the cafe in the back of the complex overlooking the Rathaus which was very popular for brunch with the locals.
This hotel is luxury at a price which can only sky-rocket in the future so again I highly recommend that you go now if you can.

Room Tip: Top floor overlooking the Rathaus is splendid.

This hotel is truely "wunderbar"!
Perfect location, realy nice rooms with the highest ceillings ever, excellent service with a genuine smile. Pool and sauna with style.
Everythings is nice in this 5* hotel... and the good news is...it's affordable also!

Look for nice deals and you will pay not much more the 100€ a night.
Park at the self park opposite of the hotel for 14€ a night. Breakfast buffet is great but (to) expensive at 28€ pp, however, the hotel is surrounded by nice café's and restaurants where you can have a complete breakfast for less then € 10,-
All in all...when in Leipzig...this is the place to be!

Such a shame that a refurbished hotel doesn't bother to install a working wifi system for many of their rooms.

I ended up walking around with members if staff trying to find rooms that their signal actually reached.

The Steigenberger in Leipzig is one of the great hotels for cultural encounters. Knowing this I was very excited when Peter Sloterdijk invited me to Leipzig to be present for the second "Myshkin Prize" celebration, which went this year to Pema, (sister of the Dalai Lama), Noam Chomsky, the linguist and political activist and Mr. Hummel, a banker from Switzerland. Actually the Myshkin Prize is an Anti-prize, since Count Myshkin in Dostojewsky's "Idiot" is an anti-hero.
I am saying all this because the Steigenberger is in it's sober luxury with long corridors, an excellent bar, a velvety atmosphere in ante-rooms and many discreet meeting corners a hotel, where you want to conduct exceptional events. It's central location gives nothing away from the secret that the rich city of Leipzig was the most important "Handelshaus" for trade with the Orient and has become a central intellectual hub for sciences and art in modern day Germany.
Going back to Leipzig, I would book any time again in the Steigenberger, not least because of it's staff, informed and committed to their city.

Room Tip: Near to the elevators to avoid frequent long marches in the corridors, if you have to meet many peop...

I arrived at this hotel following a long day of train travel. It had been a very long day, and I was exhausted when I arrived at the hotel. The front desk staff was great and really made me feel welcome, despite my inability to speak any German. Staff recommendations for restaurants around the corner was perfect. I also had breakfast here in the morning prior to my departure, and it was excellent as well.

The hotel was nice, as was the staff (friendly and helpful). The location is perfect in downtown Leipzig so one can walk in no time to the restaurants, shops, zoo, etc.,. There are a couple points, though. The first has nothing to do with the hotel itself, but with the city/road situation. It is horrible to get to this hotel due to the one-way streets, and also lack of street signs. The city has made it so difficult to find this hotel (especially by creating a "sudden" one-way street/bridge for all cars - except Taxis - right when you think you have finally found it!). We, and several other guests with whom we spoke, had the same experience: driving around for 40 minutes (and stopping to ask taxi drivers, security guards, etc.) how to get to the one "magical" street in the sea of One-Way streets! We all had a good laugh sharing the stories how everyone´s car navigation systems "gave up" on trying to get us there! It shouldn´t be THAT frustrating to find a street! The hotel knows about this, as they get lots of complaints, but they can´t directly fix the problem.
The other points have to do with the hotel. Perhaps we were unlucky in the room we were in (330), but there was a horrible "noise-bridge". The room over/above our room apparently had children in it (otherwise known as "the Hamster Family"!), who kept running around and shutting the door every 30 seconds for an hour. Not only could you hear the door shut with a large "thud", but it caused a vibration down the wall which caused the desk + TV furniture attached to the wall in our room to shake. Then an adult was talking loudly for a bit and everything could be heard. Luckily by the time we came back for sleep, they were gone or at least quiet! (not the hotel´s fault that the "Hamster Family" was above us, just the fact that the noise and footsteps carried through was a bit maddening).
Second negative point was that the breakfast waitstaff seemed overwhelmed. Breakfast service is always difficult when too many guests come to eat at the same time, but in this case, the staff seemed stressed - like forgetting to bring coffee, even when asked twice.
Final negative comment was the room temperature was difficult to control. You adjust it by 1 or two degrees from a set temperature, but the problem was, it seemed like it went in the opposite extreme. Ex.: the air conditioning was running (too cold) at arrival, so I adjusted the temperature by 1 degree. The AC turned off (good), but then the room was cooking because the heat turned on. Luckily the windows open, so one could turn off the heating/cooling system. It was fine until 5 A.M. when someone (kitchen staff??) was walking around on the gravel covered roof / "courtyard" (?) just outside the window (but down a couple meters). Amazing how loud walking on gravel can be! Woke up with a start with that surprising noise (wouldn´t expect to hear someone walking on gravel at 05:00 just outside one´s window when staying in a room c. 4 levels above the ground!)

Other than the above mentioned points, the hotel was:
- clean
- recently restored historic building, so it had some character and still that "nice and new" feel (and nice bathroom).
- very friendly Reception Desk, and felt very welcomed at arrival by all staff
- good sized Standard rooms
- Very good value for money.
- Would stay there again if/when in Leipzig (just in another room!)

Excellent room, comfortable bed, polite staff, nice food, but terrible WiFi! So, very frustrating and time consuming to book anything online. The signal drops out and it takes ages for pages to load. This seems inexplicable in a hotel which is modern in every other respect.
