The location is magnificent - near the Albrechrsburg castle, overlooking the old town of Meissen. The prices, surprisingly, are very fair. My wife had a trout with boiled potatoes and horseradish and I enjoyed a Saxon goulash in a rye bread bowl. The food was exceptional, the staff very friendly and we left a generous tip. The spirit of old times is alive in Domkeller. Highly recommended.

We hiked up the steps to this restaurant because we heard they served traditional Saxon food that is more authentic than the places we found in Dresden.

We ordered house light beer which was great. For lunch we had the Saxon potato soup (huge serving, free refill and only 6, 20) and the pork leg platter. The soup was wonderful, very hearty. I didn't manage to finish the bowl before filling up. The pork fell of the bone and the sides were large and filling. It was my husband's favorite meal of the trip and it cost less than what we ate at a tourist pub in Dresden.

Stayed in Meissen on a business trip with no dinner plans and found Domkeller on Tripadvisor. It's a bit of a walk up to the dome, but worth it, not only for the restaurant. Since we had no reservations, we couldn't get a seat in the area with a view. Even withhout view, the restaurant is nice. The building is old, and the interior is in line with the traditional approach of the place.

The menu features traditional local cuisine. Prices are moderate, portions ample and the food nice. If you have room for dessert, try the poppy seed pudding.

Add to this a friendly and professional service and you have a restaurant that is recommendable despite of being a tourist destination.

This place is awesome. Traveling with my father, we chose Meissen for a day trip from Berlin (a nice 1.75 hour drive from Berlin on the autobahn). We pulled up to the town with no plans or expectations and I looked for the best restaurant in town and boy did they deliver. You absolutely must get a table on the railing (we were on the second story), this is literally THE best view I've ever had from a table at a restaurant. Food was very very good, service was good (they spoke enough English to get by) and the local beer was also great. This is a great lunch/dinner spot, and really easy to get to. Note: you have to either take the tram or the stairs up to the cathedral area, this isn't obvious from directions, but if you ask the townspeople they seem to know Domkellher.
