Best Western Hotel Des Nordens
Ranked #3 of 25 Hotels in Flensburg
Reviewed 27 May 2014

The hotel is situated "out of town" and close to a Fleggaard supermarket - not the most exciting surroundings. However, the hotel itself is super, Nice clean roms and a perfekt pool and spa. The food in the restaurant was excellent and all that compensated for the strange location.

Average, for a 4* hotel regarding the rooms (the room were very clean, but does not look like a 4*), but one of the best options for business travel in the area. also very good quality sleep and very good breakfast also. Easy to access for business meetings in the area, and also very close to a supermarket (better said en-gros mrket). Swimming pool is great.

Room Tip: Don't miss the swimming pool

I stayed at Best Western des Nordnes in April 2014 during my business trip to Flensburg. Originally booked in Arcadia, but had to change to this hotel due to lack of rooms (apparently this was a high season for cross-border shoppers from Denmark).

Best Western is out of town, but less than 10 minutes (11-12 eur) by taxi to the city centre. This wasn't an issue for me as the transportation was covered by my employer, but others may want to take this factor into account.

Likes:

1) breakfast buffet - great variety, always fresh, excellent quality and there was always a choice of local produce. There were very few guests in the restaurant between 06:30 and 07:30, despite the fact that the hotel was fully booked.
2) heated outdoor pool - included in my room rate, but available to everyone for only 5 eur per visit.
3) supermarket just around the corner for snacks and other needs, if you don't want to eat in the restaurant.
4) possibility to have an evening jog in the woods, just behind the hotel. I also ran along the quiet country roads, between farms and detached houses early in the evening, and came across only two cars.
5) rooms were very basic, but clean and functional

Dislikes:
1) terrible pillows - very soft, felt like they were stuffed with packing material, like bubble wrap.
2) some of the staff at the reception didn't seem to possess the full range of facial expressions, so smiles were rare to be seen.
3) (for winter / early spring travellers) it will take some trial and error to get the room temperature adjusted to your comfort.
4) not a biggie, but lack of English language channels was somewhat surprising, if not disappointing. BBC and CNN news channels are available.
5) Internet slower than I was used to having in other European hotels

Stayed there one night - and enjoyed it!

The service in the reception was very good, and the room was quite spacy. Free parking just outside.

Also they have a quite big restaurant where they serve a fine breakfast. The menu for dinner in the evening is not the biggest, but the food is OK with a fair pricetag.
Very convenient location at the road 200 - in Germany, but only 400 meters from the Danish border, close to Krusaa..

Sales photos looks really good. The reality is slightly different.

We got a room in the building towards the forrest - not in the main building. The room had a destinct musty smell and a very sad and "tired" decor. Bathroom seemed newly refurbished. No cold water in taps - just warm and semi-warm.

No fridge.- no air condition - no coffee/the making facilities. Bedding is very worn. The pillow felt like 10 pairs of socks in a laundry bag.

Parking is free and just outside your door. Internet also free and working nicely.

The big attraction must be the swimmingpool and the outdoor pool area. If the weather behaves, then this is a nice addition.

We will not return.

We stayed in Flensburg en-route from The Netherlands to Copenhagen, and chose the Best Western based on the reviews here and on having stayed in some decent Best Westerns in other countries. I cannot imagine why the hotel is so highly rated; it must be the most over-priced, under-specced hotel I have ever stayed in.

The room is small and spartan. For Euro 130 per night I don't expect The Savoy, but I do expect tea/coffee in the room and a mini-bar, or at least an open hotel shop at 8.30.

I expect an "a la carte" restaurant with more than three main course options, or even more shockingly a "buffet restaurant" with more than 3 dishes!

At least the hotel offers free wi-fi (so I could write this review!), and the girl at front desk was friendly and helpful; otherwise the hotel has no redeeming features.

Perhaps the standard is best summarised by the "no supermarket shopping trolleys please" sign outside the lift to the rooms ...

Room Tip: Don't stay here!

On our way driving to Italy from Stavanger Norway, we booked 2 rooms for 1 Night at the hotel through the Internett. We Didn't expect Much but the rate was good including breakfast. Don"t even think about it. Book it. it is an excellent place to stay. It is quite old, but the rooms are redone the last years. Painted and the bathrooms are totalt redone in a god way. The rooms we had were big and about 40 m2. The restaurant had a spesial atmoshere. We we were surprised by the quality and service. The hotel has an excellent swimmingpool innside And You can swim to the outsidere. Great free parking and a convenient shopping center next door.
