“Modern comfort in an old city”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 January 2012

The Atlantic Hotel in Lubeck hit all of our families priorities in a hotel: clean, comfortable and convenient. The hotel has a modern design and it is very evident the hotel is kept up/maintained and is kept clean. The beds were firm, the sheets soft and the bathroom was efficient and a good use of space. We spent a few days in Lubeck over Christmas when there wasn't much open and the Atlantic had a nice lounge/bar (although small), a bonus with the sauna/steam room/work-out area to ward off the winter chill for the family to enjoy. The hotel staff even left a Christmas card and marzipan chocolates in our room! The location is really perfect - a short walk from the train station and easy access to the Christmas market and historic buildings. The breakfast consisted of an extensive buffet, with a chef to make eggs or pancakes, full european breakfast items and more. The only bad thing I would say is the towels are a little too small.

Room Tip: Our rooms faced the street which was a dead end and not very busy so it was quiet.

If you want to explore this beautiful old city there is no better location. You are right in center of everything. The hotel just opened 2 years ago. It has a pleasant modern design and very functional rooms. They are a bit small for two if you stay more then a day or two. Rooms at the backside, especially those higher up, have a nice view over the city. If you come by car you need to reserve parking ahead of time since parking directly in the hotel is limited. A public garage is right next to the hotel - not a big hassle but important to know. The breakfast room is pleasant and the buffet is fine. Staff is friendly and helpful, just don't expect bell boys to help with your luggage.

We had a very nice room on the higher floors, breakfast was great and the room was very clean with a nice bathroom. Beds very comfy. You are close to all the sights in Lubeck and dont need a car to get around.

Great location within short walking distance of major sights and train station. I loved the modern design of the rooms. Very comfortable bed. Breakfast was average.

My only complaint was my inability to connect to their WLAN, a problem I've not encountered at other hotels during my travels. When I presented this issue at the front desk they advised they could have someone check out the next day and I could use the public terminal. I was leaving the next day, so it wasn't helpful. I specifically chose the hotel for WLAN so I could work online in my room.

Perhaps beyond the staff's control, but disappointing none the less. Otherwise very good experience.

Due to travel problems caused by the snow we did not arrive at the hotel until 11pm. However the reception staff were extremely efficient and friendly and had us checked in very quickly.

The rooms were fairly roomy and very clean and comfortable.

Excellent breakfast with chefs on hand to cook eggs to order.

Throughout our stay all staff encountered were very polite and friendly.

My boyfriend and I stayed 3 nights at Atlantic Hotel in Lubeck over New Years 2010 / 2011. I do a lot of research before our travels to ensure a modern, well staffed and clean hotel. This we got at the Atlantic. The service was top notch and the beakfast buffet was nothin short of extraordinary with a chef at the ready for guests' requests of pancakes, omelets, scrambled eggs etc.
Note if you are booking a New Year's trip to Lübeck, that fireworks are banned from the city centre (inside city walls) due to the very old houses.

PARKING
The Atlantic is right in the city centre, and there really is no parking inside of the city walls. Luckily the hotel is right next door to a parking "highrise". Seeing as the alternative is parking outside of the city walls, this is a nice offer to guests. The cost is around 10 Euros per day, and the hotel staff has a key, so that guests can get in and out of the parking house at all hours of the day.

DOG
We usually bring our dog on travels, and he was more than welcome at the Atlantic (at 13 Euros a night). The city is a nice and clean place for walking a dog, and most shops and cafés allow them inside, which is nice.

ROOM
We always book a superior room, it's much more comfort and space for usually a very small fee. Our room was nice, cozy in warm coulors and with a nice stylish painting over the bed. The TV was fine with only few non-german channels. I'm fine as long as there's CNN, which there was. The room was overall very clean. I always check linnen, furniture, shower etc. upon arrival and with the exception of a couple of small dried water stains on the back edge of the zink in the bathroom, everything was spotless. I noted the spots to the front desk clerk on the day of arrival, and when we got back from a short walk, they were gone.

AMENITIES
The free fitness centre is very modern, not big but it's a nice space with a great view of the city. Next to the gym there is a lovely spaarea (no pool) with lounge chairs and a sauna. Be aware that german patrons use the sauna completely nude. I'm not shy, but I didn't appreciate the view of older, hairy overweight men and their "stuff". I really think the hotel should either urge guests to use the sauna wearing bathingsuits or at least put up a sign, so everybody's prepared for the nudity. Of course the stay includes slippers and robes and if you, as I did, find the mattress a bit too hard, hotel staff will be right there with a softer top mattress.
The minibar is NOT comp. In an effort to spare the environment (and their costs) the cleaning staff only change handsoapes and shampoos if they are empty or if you ask them to. I liked the little green frog on the side of the bathroom zink, it was cute. The tub was nice too.

POOL
Next to the hotel there is an indoor public swimming pool. Entrence is 4 Euros.

RESTAURANT SALIS (in the hotel)
On New Years Eve we ate at the hotel restaurant. I'm a vegetarian and after checking with about 15 restaurants in the city, I chose the one in the hotel, where the chef was very glad to accomodate my preferences. The food was very tasty and innovative. The restaurant must be very popular, seeing as it was always very packed. For breakfast locals would come in to enjoy the plentiful buffet.
The restaurant staffers also man the hotel bar, where they gladly lend you champagne and wine glasses to take to the room, as well as they are kind enough to fix a plate or dessert even after hours.

RESTAURANTS
One night we ate at the LACHSWEHR Restaurant in the hopes that it would be as fantastic as described on their website. It wasn't. The suroundings are beautiful, but the food was downright boring and tasteless.
There are plenty of great restaurant in town, my suggestion is that you take a walk and check out the atsmosphere and menus of some of the more delish places like: MIERA, SHANGHAI, SALIS (hotel Atlantic). Do yourself the favour of trying the cakes from the Niederegger shop in town, lovely.

SHOPPING
None of the big designers have shops in Lübeck, because of the close proximity to Hamburg and Berlin, so don't expect to vist Louis Vuitton, Max Mara, Hugo Boss etc.

TRAVEMÜNDE
On holy days and weekends people from all around the area flock to Travemünde. Be prepare to share the seaside with a half million other visitors. It is a nice scenery though and you can find quite beautiful spots if you just go a bit further than the short boeardwalk by the ocean front.

We are not likely to visit Lübeck again. Mostly because the city is a bit to small for us. We are both in our late 20's and like shopping quite a bit... But we can both recommend the Atlantic hotel in Lübeck. Check out the church right next to the hotel, where you can see Lübeck from its tower top.

As with all the other Atlantic Hotels, this hotel was very professional, well organised, well equipped.
It's a very new hotel and it looks smart and impressive although the clean lines and minimalist feel may not be to everyone's taste. The rooms are not huge but have everything one may require. Better to have a room facing away from the hotel front as there's an annoyingly loud air conditioning noise from the building opposite that seems to run all the time. However, to be fair, we were offered another room automatically when we pointed this out at reception.
The staff are excellent and the location of the hotel cannot be faulted.
Good breakfast.
