We caught the bus into town from the camp site and started our city walk from the Holstentor. It is an interesting city, famous for its Marzipan. You can see it in a day, and it is a very interesting city to explore.

The OldTown of Lubeck which was the Hanseatic capital, is on the Unesco World Heritage list – it is lovely to enter by Holstentor – 1 of 4 city gates still remaining– leaning ominously though. There are 7 gothic church towers which make the skyline beautiful (they include the Dom, Petrikirche, St Catherines Church - all worth visiting). The town hall or Rathaus is a beautiful building with the Alter Markt in the square. Opposite is the famous Café Niederegger – home of the world famous Niederegger marzipan - you will be confronted with overchoice of delicious Niederegger morsels.
The side streets have narrow lanes going off them, with well preserved mediaeval houses, window boxes with flowers tumbling down. Beautiful to fold you map up and just wander

This town, famous for its marzipan, is well worth a visit. There is lots to see, such as the Am Holstentor Gateway, the Holy Ghost Hospital, St Marienkirche Church and lots of interesting little passageways, which were used to house widows, orphans and manual workers.

This is a great place to take a day trip from Hamburg. It is only an hour away by train [on a Schleswicg-Holstein ticket it is very cheap for 2 or more people travelling together.- you get from 9 am until 3 am the next morning on all public transport in the province]. The obvious place to start is the beautiful Steiner Tor with it's photogenic red brick. We made our way through the centre of the old town to the other existing town gate [tor], stopping to climb the stairs of the cathedral on the way, and enjoying the Rathaus. We also bought about a kilo of marzipan in the marzipan shop/factory. I don't think you will ever see so many varieties of marzipan again. The shop is not a tourist attraction for designs made of marzipan, such as you can see in Szentandre, Hungary: It is all about taste.
