“'Wow' interiors and a personal touch!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 March 2013

It is very close to the city centre area, a very short walkable distance to the central market-place.
It is located right next to the 'Goethe Gallerie', which is probably the largest mall in Jena. In fact, there was a nice view through the glass-dome of the mall from my room. However, on the other side as well there would have been a great view because it faces the beautiful 'Ernst Abbe Haus'.

I read that they had completely renovated and opened newly only in November 2012. Rooms are really beautiful, very tastefully done interiors, lovely colours in the room and bathroom, beautifully fitted lights and carpeting. The lobby is on the 3rd floor and you have to take one lift from the reception and then another to the rooms, but that is not an inconvenience at all.

The restaurant is very nicely appointed and food is somehow both gourmet and homely at the same time. I had dinner there with the boss and the food and service were both really good.

Breakfast was absolutely fabulous! Varities of creams, cheeses and different kinds of butters were all home-made; there were 4 varieties of cornflakes and 4 of museli, 6 types of juices, cut fruits, uncut fruits, different kinds of breads and croissants, grilled tomatoes ... and all these are from the vegetarian section. I didn't particularly notice the cold cut meats and hams that were there.

All this apart, the staff were very warm and they really made me feel welcome.
I had a very nice stay and loved the place.

Stayed at the Steigenberger Hotel for three nights in early March.

We have a corporate rate at this hotel as it is convienient for our office.

The hotel was good, rooms were spacious and there was alot of choice for breakfast, mostly cold meats, pastries and cereal, although there was some hot food too.

It is a strange set up with reception on the first floor, then you have to take a lift to the third, get out and walk to another bank of elevators to get to the bedrooms which are arranged centrally around the bar area. Noise was a small problem as you could hear people clearly in the bar, and I guess this could be a real pain if there was a convention, although this wasn't the case when I was there.

Bar prices are reasonable, but we chose not to eat in the hotel resturant as the food was too extravagant; not in price just in presentation.

This was a good hotel, a little old fashioned but it was clean. I will stay again I am sure.

I like the decor at this hotel. Compared to Ibis and other lower end hotels in the area, this one looks very modern and chic. The reason I give it a 3-stars is due to the many practical shortcomings I don't expect from a newly renovated hotel. For example,

1) My colleague and I are staying on the (Rm) 525/527 side of the building. Both of us found our shower luke warm and water pressure less than satisfactory. Our colleagues across the hall had no problem. Odd.

2) The breakfast buffet is 18 EUR. Very pricy for this area. At that price, you are better off dropping by the many local bakeries nearby for 1 EUR.

3) You are only given 30 minutes of free WiFi each day and you have to get a new code from the front desk every day. The front desk staff is very nice about it. It's just inconvenient and surprising for the room rate we pay. This hotel is the most expensive in this area. It should include WiFi.

Thank you for your comments. We are very sorry for the waterproblems. We have passed your points of criticism immediately on to the
technical department head in order to avoid such problems in the future.
We recommend you to book the room inclusive breakfast to get a better breakfast-rate next time.

Firstly, the sauna was not working. Brand new and issues, technical guy cannot fix because it was the 27th, 28th of December, the company supplier was on holidays. Alternative offered - nothing. But I did get a 'well what are you expecting from us type look and response'. I was not in the mood to spoon feed their poor customer service.

Secondly, it has been designed by idiots! Close the door of your room and your hand will get crushed by the door frame. Wash your hands in your room and you will have to travel to the other side of the bath room to the corner a meter away from the sink to get the hand soap. Ours was also obstructed by the glasses and hidden by a flower pot thing. & Do not kneel on the carpet, it is as hash as a door mat.

Thirdly, if you need to leave the building, you need to take the lift to the restaurant level first, walk to the next set of lifts and then take that up and visa versa to get out!

Fourthly, skip the breakfast. The Breakfast staff are the nicest and friendliest out of the bad bunch, but it is not worth the excessive cost. The food did not look fresh and some looked dried. Take a short walk to any of the little breakfast locations in the area and at half the price the coffee will be real coffee and the breakfast will be fresh and delicious.

Fifthly, Internet is charged for!? In what world are they living in!!! Negotiated free internet owing to the lack of sauna, an hour was offered. Told them to grow up (not in those words - but had to be pushy) and they gave us a day. Had two bars of reception and it was slow!

Sixth, HOW MUCH! Too expensive for the area. Too expensive for what it is. Stay slightly further out and get your monies worth. Jena beautiful and little, walking distances is not an issue.

We stayed two nights. Stayed there because they had a sauna which is miniature and will fit less than 0.2% of the guests if the hotel was full. Like I said, designed by an idiot. If it were me I would get a refund on the refurbishment designer.

Dear Derek,

We are very sorry that your stay with us obviously was not as agreeable as you thought it might be and we would like to apologize for all inconvenience caused.
Indeed the sauna unfortunately got broken at the 27th of December and could not be repaired until the 30th of December. An alternative in between those holidays was unfortunately not possible. We are sorry, that you do not find the liquid soap immediately in our bath-room, but we hope that you found the additional piece of soap directly beside the washbasin.
The carpet you felt like a door mat is a brand new carpet with a high quality and especially made for hotel rooms.
We are also sorry, that you did not like our rich Champagne-Buffet breakfast, which is well known in our town.
In spite of the negative impressions you gained, we would be happy to welcome you again at our hotel in order to convince you of our quality of service.

Yours sincerely

Steigenberger Esplanade is a modern hotel and re-opened after a yearlong construction in November 2012. Unfortunately there is rust in the water pipes which affects "some of the rooms" . I stayed the first week that the hotel had opened and in my room the HOT water would run brown and after 5 minutes it would turn very light yellow. If you plan on staying check the running water for both hot and cold separately and see for yourself. I still like this hotel very much but they need to solve the rust problem.

after booking I found out on the hotel's homepage, that they will close from 9th of Octobre 2011 until autumn next year.
My experience:
- front desk was very helpful and kind, some difficultues with the invoice printer were inevitable
- up to the room, the keycard didn't work, none of teh two. So I went don't again and was told, that in this case they recommend an additional key. This worked out, but was a bit unprofessional to me to use keycard plus key.
- in the room certain corners, the quilt and the carpet didn't look "so new anymore"...
- a while in the room I was distracted by several flies, during 2 hours I did catch 7 in total ! :-(
The were very noisy around the light bulbs, so no alternative than to catch them all immediately. Don't know where they came from (the ventilation?), anyhow finally a bad conclusion of that hotel.

The overall design of the lobby is nice. Breakfast next morning was good, but not really excellent. The location is central in the „Goethe Galerie“ and the view from the windows were good.
But the rooms and corridors really need their renovation.... sorry to say that the final value was not good enough for a 4* hotel.

Room Tip: the higher the better view :-)

Chose this hotel as I had an early train from Jena West and it looked like a short walk (it was, 10 minutes).

The hotel itself was very nice rooms were somewhat larger than I expected and were quite clean and fairlly modern. No complaints.

However, the price was ~$200 / night which is just too much for a moderate business hotel in a small city. The high price included no extras. Internet access was a separate and very high charge, likewise breakfast and parking. By the time all was done the night was pushing $300.

There is a very nice mall immediately next door which could be a nice diversion for an hour or two, especially in bad weather.

Please note that the hotel website says they will be closed for remodel for an extended period starting fall 2011. This review was written prior.
