“Nice place - central location”
Reviewed 7 September 2013

Nice room, though not too large. Centraly located, walking distance from evrything. Great breakfast buffet. Very good restaurant (though bit expansive). The place is full of history, very recommended.

Excellent service, friendly staff and a wonderful continental breakfast. The hotel is within walking distance to city center, local restaurants and bars. The rail system stop in front of hotel and easy to access to all of Jena.

The hotel is located not far from Jena's Pardies station and near to the FA-university. The service is excellent and the rooms are consistent with a historic hotel. One problem is that there is no air conditioning in the rooms. The week I stayed had some days in 30+C Temperatures. Opening the window helps but then introduces noise.
Breakfast was excellent with a wide range of continental options. Fruits salads, yogurt as well as traditional meats, cheeses are bread.
I would definitely stay there again.

We stayed 4 days/3 nights in this hotel for business purposes. The room and bathroom were spacious and spotlessly clean, furniture was old but well kept. There was a lovely historical atmosphere present both in the room as well as halls and doorways. Breakfast was ample. Staff were helpful and friendly.
The hotel isn't exactly in the city center but only minutes walking from it with great restaurants and lively atmosphere.
I'd certainly go to this hotel again if I visit Jena again.

The Schwaerzer Baer is torn between two epochs. On the one hand it is on the site of the eponymous inn where Martin Luther made an appearance in 1522, an event that is proudly recorded on a giant canvas as you enter the hotel. On the other hand, it more prominently bears the legacy of a socialist-era renovation that invites a rather different 1970s feel. In the rooms, beds are fitted onto wooden consoles with delightfully inset clock radios. Caught between these two very different eras, the Schwaerzer Baer somehow celebrates neither. But the effect is genial all the same.

Rooms are spotlessly clean and wonderfully quiet. Thick walls and double windows protect you from your surrounds. The deft placement of closets by the entrance to some of the rooms means that you even have a double-door entryway, your own small foyer, further insulating you from corridor noise. Bathrooms in the less expensive rooms we had were tiny but again spotless. Wifi was smooth and breakfast was ample.

Staff are friendly and helpful. They welcomed me with smile everytime when I come back. I stayed there for over ten nights. The room was historical. I liked fancy breakfast, and ate it so much every morning.

Disclaimer: I only ate at the restaurant in this hotel - I did not stay in it. My friend, who did stay in it said the breakfast, rooms and staff were all very good, but she found the bed a little uncomfortable.

Anyway. This place looks very posh, and I suppose it is. They serve traditional German food, and it's quite up-market in presentation and in the selection of foods available (lots of veal and venison, also duck, guina fowl, and so on). I ordered the duck, which was rather good, I think it's a bit of a speciality in Jena. For the duck and a large beer I paid €17, which is just above average for the area, I think. From what I could see though, the wine menu was quite expensive, and both starters (except soups) and desserts the prices were a bit high.

I recommend the restaurant, and the hotel in general looks very good (in spite of my friend's comment about the beds) and I would certainly eat in the restaurant again, but I'd save it for a special occasion and splurge a bit on wine and things.
