“New year in Almeria”
Reviewed 9 January 2008

Excellent hotel. Classy rooms and central location. Staff very helpful and the hotel is spotlessly clean. Really good value.

Unlike earlier reviews communication with the hotel staff in English was not particularly problematic.

Excellent tapas nearby especially La Shrak.

Highly rated.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this hotel. It's a converted large house overlooking a square next to the cathedral. The staff are all pleasant and helpful, and the room was spacious, with high ceilings, period furniture and a lovely bathroom. All spotlessly clean. The bed linen was particularly good quality. However we had specifically requested a double room, but the receptionist told us there were none left, but that she had upgraded us to a twin room overlooking the square instead. A bit irritating, but not a disaster.

The breakfast was adequate, but they could have done with an extra waitress. The coffee is dispensed one cup at a time from the expresso machine in the bar next door, and I finally had to walk over to ask for another cup. Nice coffee, but a daft arrangement in such a good hotel.

We were there on a Sunday night, and discovered too late that virtually every restaurant is closed on Sundays, We finally came across the "Club de Mar" overlooking a marina and had the bizarre experience of dining alone in a vast restaurant, once they switched the lights on for us. The waiter told us that the place was heaving at lunchtime, but hardly anyone went there in the evening.

Overall a very pleasant stay, and highly recommended.

Warm reception to an extremely stylish hotel marvellously located. Some sympathy with gripes about breakfast service but would definitely return and recommend highly.

Although the hotel was very good in most respects I can empathise with the Leeds reviewer. As I can speak half-decent Spanish our party was quicky attended to at check in but breakfast could prove problematic. Even speaking spanish we had some Basil Fawlty moments with one girl and her older boss who just seemed to be deliberatley difficult and we have NEVER heard so much noise coming from someone putting away glasses (while we were having our breakfast) - which was slightly irritating as this could have been done at ANY OTHER TIME! As we were all in a very good mood throughout our stay we didn't let this spoil our time but if you were wanting a relaxing, stress-free trip and spoke no spanish the service could leave you tearing your hair out.
Having said that, the room was great, the location great and really it was excellent value for money. Having seen that they plan on charging about 250 Euro a night (info on back of our room door) I would only recommend you stay here if you can get a deal as, although it is good, my feelings may change if I had to pay top dollar. It isn't quite ticking all the 4 and 5 * boxes although it is clearly aiming that way. There are no bathrobes for example but there is dial up internet in each room (if you can figure it out!).
As Almeria looks likely to become a new Easyjet hotspot certainly consider this hotel - but shop around for prices, and take a good phrasebook or spanish speaker with you.

What a beautiful hotel. The room was super just like the photograph on the web site. Staff were very helpful but did not speak a lot of English. You have to ask about parking as the hotel has a deal with a local car park for 12 euros per day which is half price. It is very difficult to park in Almeria as the streets are very narrow. We had a lovely breakfast with a selction of hot and cold dishes. The roof top balcony is great for getting some some and relaxation. On a Sunday it is very quiet and even the cathedral square is empty. The hotel provides free orange juice and water from a mini bar for your room. You have the use of a computer in your room. In Almeria if you order a drink in a bar they provide free tapas. We had trouble getting an evening meal as everywhere just seemed to sell tapas. Could be we looked in the wrong places. We took the car to Cabo de Gata to the National Park this is worth a visit. The scenery was outstanding and great walks if you are prepared for the heat. This is a very cental hotel.
