Hotel Macia Alfaros
Ranked #27 of 65 Hotels in Cordoba
Reviewed 3 August 2011

Tucked away in a narrow street in Cordoba's delightful old town, even if the spacious, modern interior of Hotel Macia Alfaros doesn't fully reflect the charm of its quaint surroundings, it's nonetheless a great base for tourists with all sights easily walkable and the main rail station a comfortable stroll away. Better still, it's in easy reach of numerous great places to eat and drink which surely contributed to our overall perception of Cordoba as a relaxing, laid back place to be.

Our tastefully decorated, clean and comfortable room was generously sized with an attractive and sizeable bathroom, plus well-stocked and reasonably priced mini-bar. An apparently unique feature of this room was its own little terrace in the centre of the hotel - something of a sun trap where one can sit out with drinks after a hard day's sightseeing. Well away from the street, the only noise came from the swifts circling overhead.

Facilities are good: there's free wi-fi, on-site private parking is available and there's a small but pleasant outdoor pool with sun terrace. Dining options both formal and informal at moderate cost are available along with a bar - I must confess we didn't partake (in the hotel at least!). Staff were all extremely helpful and easy to deal with and treated any problems with a reassuring mix of good nature and efficiency.

The hotel appears to be reasonably equipped to cater for disabled visitors though I would recommend confirming room access prior to arrival. The only thing I'd explicitly criticise is that the in-room safe is charged at 2.50 Euro a day - this should be free in my opinion.

Room Tip: Room 303 has its own terrace. No street noise either!

If you are planning to arrive by car be prepared: the hotel and its parking are in a narrow street in the city center, a taxi-driver might have blocked its entrance, as he would never moove the iron columns himself, in order to unblock some spare space, unless the reception lady comes - the one that, according to my impression, does the job, whilst other staff members are just trying to avoid work.

The rooms have nothing to do with a ****-Hotel, as you can listen to the conversation of the tenant in the opposite room (!). After asking this helpfull lady for a calmer room (the only realy friendly person in there) the staff altogether decided to give me a room in an very remote part of the hotel, near the swimming pool, determined apparently for guests having booked to a higher tarif. This didn´t belong to the old building and looked like a "Macia Real" room, a fully **** like. The window was not closing well and there was noise the whole night by young drunkards.

I placed my laptop in the small safe and tried to find a way to lock it, but even after 10 minutes it was impossible. I went to the reception, where I was told that there is an extra fee to pay for this (€ 2,60 per day) and 5 € had to be deposited for the small pen that activates the safe.

The parking costs € 18 per day (!) and consists of three floors, but if you plac your car in the 3d one you will have to darg your luggage over stairs. The parking is not used exclusively by the tenants, so don´t be shocked if you see spanish cars running at 50 km through the garage.

Especially if you come by car, avoid this unfriendly hotel and the loud, aggressive city-center.

Attractive hotel, but our luggage arrived over 60 minutes after we arrived from our tour bus, the internet did not work and their wake up call was 30 minutes late. Will not return.

This hotel is not located in the prime sightseeing area near the Mezquita. However, it is only about a 15 minute walk to that area. Some of the negatives are location ( not much to do right close to the hotel) and I found the air conditioner to work very poorly within the room. The positives to consider are many; If you have a car, drive right into the entrance of the hotel and the car park is within the hotel itself. You do NOT want to drive your car into the Old City! If you have kids, they have a great pool to cool off and relax. The rooms are also quite spacious. The breakfast buffet is quite extensive and there is something for everyone. The hotel staff is very helpful and there is free internet. They also allowed us to keep our bags in a secure room until we came back to get them for our 5pm train back to Madrid. If you choose to stay close to the Mestiza, you will likely not get the same type of amenities that this hotel offers.

Room Tip: Ask for courtyard facing room below reception levl

Great hotel, great rooms, central location. Free WiFi in the rooms.

A private underground parking is available for 17.5 euros per day. The entrance is located just next to the entrance of the hotel. Just take a ticket at the parking barrier, and pay at the reception when you leave.

Very nice rooms with good air-conditioning. Fantastic swimming pool in a charming courtyard. Hotel's underground garage parking was fine but a lot of pillars to steer around.

We were able to walk to all the sights. The hotel's location is very good.

The hotel's bar staff were good. We did not have an opportunity to use the restaurant but it looked appealing. Really enjoyed a relaxing stay and would stay again.

We noticed a few very minor areas that the hotel management could very easily improve on:

* One has to lodge a E20 deposit at hotel reception to get a free towel to use at the pool. It is inconvenient to have to visit reception in one's bathing suite prior and after using the pool which is on another level. Surely another system could be used.

* The pool and surrounding courtyard is lovely. But during our stay the pool's toilet and changing room remained locked. Reception promised it would be opened but this never happened.

* Only one of the manager's seemed familiar with the hotel's wireless internet system. Reception staff were giving out an unusable password/code because they seemed unaware there are TWO internet routers used by the hotel. Confusingly, the two router names are differentiated only by the use of upper case letters of the SAME word. Perhaps something akin to "hotel1" and "hotel2" together with some appropriate training for reception staff could be considered.

* Breakfast was generally very good but there were queues for coffee. In addition, coffee was dispensed from a self service urn. The tap and the location of this urn I found made it unstable when the urn was near empty. I imagine there could be circumstances when this could present an issue to safety.

Great value for the price paid. Hotel is very well located, just minutes walking distance from all the places to visit in cordoba. Parking lot was very small and expensive (17Euros per day). Breakfast was not included and it was very good but quite expensive 12.35Euros.

i do reccomend this hotel as you get a good geal for the money paid
