We have visited many cathedrals through Europe but his one is stunning and so different to any we have seen before. Amazing. Try to go later in the afternoon. We went at 4pm and were able to walk around freely

My wife and I recently visited the Mezquita and were both underwhelmed by it. The audio guide is very hard to follow because the various site are not numbered inside, and the moorish part of the site is very dark. The Christian church that is plunked down in the middle of the mosque is better lit, and easier to see. But putting it in the middle of the mosque was off putting to my wife and I.

The intersection of Muslim and Christian religions in this impressive structure makes for an incredible contrast. When you enter all you can see if row upon row of columns and painted arches which date back more than 1,000 years and formed the heart of the ancient mosque. Make sure to careful wind your win around in a counterclockwise direction to see all of the side chapels built following the conversion of the building to a Catholic Cathedral but also the spectacular remnants of the Muslim mosque. The old archways, carved plaster and mosaics are incredible to see. The "new" Christian main chapel which has been plunked down in the middle of the old mosque is also impressive. The lighting only serves to enhance the look and feel of the interior - extraordinarily well done. Don't miss the sacristy containing some incredible relics. Admission is 10E and additional 2E if you want to climb the tower. This is one of the few sights in Cordoba that is actually open on Mondays!

It started out as a small catholic church and in 784 a great Mosque was built on the site. In 1236 Cordoba returned to Christianity and it was converted back to Roman Catholic. In the 16th century the Renaissance cathedral was inserted inside . Fortunately the architecture has been retained and it is a most remarkable building and today both Christians and Muslims pray there in harmony. You can spend a few hours exploring the massive area. This was third visit over the years and continued to amaze.

Cordoba is beautiful in many ways with its flowering patios, architectural excellence, and wonderful residents. The Mezquita is proof that Cordoba has been an extraordinary place for centuries. Enter and let its unique beauty and history expand your understanding of the world.
