“Perfect stay in ancient Roman palace”
Reviewed 27 November 2008

My wife and I just finished a two-night stay at this hotel, part of the Hospes chain of boutique properties.

We stayed in room 201, the Gran Suite Loft. We had a terrific rate, 280 Euro/night, for a room that was easily 50 sq.m. (about 600 sq.ft.) It included a king bed, flat screen TV, DVD player, sitting area, separate tub and shower, and two sinks. Being on the top floor, we had windows on both sides of the room overlooking the hotel roofs and surrounding buildings. It was a beautiful view of sunrise and sunset.

The hotel is a former palacio, part of which dates back to Roman times. The structure is a complex of buildings including the Roman house as well as 17th century homes.

The hotel offers five-star services including a spa, restaurant, tapas bar and lounge.

The Senzone restaurant and lounge is located on the ground floor of the hotel. It has a glass floor which allows you to see the ancient Roman baths while dining. The baths have a beautiful mosaic floor. The restaurant is open for breakfast (8:30-12noon) and dinner (8:00pm-midnight).

The Tapas bar is open for lunch (12noon-4pm) and for dinner (8pm-midnight).

The patio of the hotel has a pool and orange trees. Each day the hotel staff places oranges that have fallen from the trees into bowls. These are wonderfully fresh oranges and great for an afternoon snack.

This was the highpoint of our whole trip. The hotel is truly amazing, I was sorry to leave. Cordoba was enchanting, as was all Andalusia - we have also been to Granada and Seville - but the hotel was the reason why we decided to stay one day more.

Imagine a hotel located right at the historical center, yet very convenient and easy to get to, either by car or foot. It is a beautiful historial property, and its rooms are distributed around different patios, each with its own character. The pool area is surrounded by gardens. The reading room is a true moorish setting, beautifully restored, with delicate carvings and painted ceiling.

The restaurant is at a glass covered patio, natural light during the day and great ambiance at night. But the special touch is the glass floor, through which one can see the ongoing excavation of an archeological site, with mosaic floors and stone columns - you can actually see the archeologists doing their job down below. I was told that part of it will soon be opened to public visitation. The food is exquisite, and probably the best breakfast I have ever had.

Now, what I will never forget is the underground moorish bath. Underground heated pools, with bubbling water reflected on the low arched stone ceiling, lighted candles into metal lamps all around...

The staff is extremely friendly, yet professional and efficient. And let me tell you, the rooms were lovely. We asked to see different rooms, and all were very nice - wood floors, beautiful painted panels over the bed, vast worktable. Special touches everywhere, from the toiletries to flower arrangements and to jars of cold water mixed with fresh fruits on side tables.

Also important to those like us who travel by car, the hotel has its own parking space, with valet service.

I could go on and on, but probably the pictures will tell it better than my english vocabulary ever could.

Our three nights at the Palacio were delightful. Its position just outside the main town was more than compensated by its beautiful ambience of marbled arched corridors and lounge, spacious dining room, lovely garden, front courtyard and Roman baths dowstairs all of which made this a distinguished stay. The room was good with spacious bathroom and wetroom area. Breakfast excellent. The staff were absolutely delightful. There is a relatively quiet adjoining tapas bar which was staffed competently on one night but on an other night, it was spoiled by an undertrained and frankly incompetent young employee; this was brought to the attention of the management who appeared to take the matter seriously. Wholehearted recommendation!

We were delighted with the Palacia del Bailio and have recommended it to our travel agent for any of its customers. The service was friendly, professional and anticipated our questions as first time tourists to Cordova.

The tapas bar was upscale and the service and food were perfect.

The hotel location was near enough to the main attactions that the walk was an interesting adventure for us rookies to Cordova. The hotels modern decor was a nice balance with the historic building and courtyards.

Our room was very well organized, clean and comfortable. We only wish we had another day or two to enjoy the spa. It looked great. The dining room was charming with a plexiglass floor looking down to roman ruins on the site. The dinner experience was first class from the menu to the service to the quality of the food.

We highly recommend this hotel.

We stayed here for 2 nights mid Oct in a standard double room.
This is a very beautiful and smart hotel. Rooms are decorated stylishly, to a high spec and are very clean. For me the best thing about this hotel was the tranquil pool area located in a leafy courtyard and still open at this time of year (Even though weather is often nice enough in Oct some hotels close their pool areas). The pool itself was spotlessly clean. The restaurant which is also the breakfast area has a glass floor looking onto some very impressive Roman remains. The staff were very nice and helpful. Goodish location (it is about a 15 minute walk to the Mezquita which did not bother us). Word of warning however - getting to the hotel by car is nightmare - tiny narrow streets and impossible to find.

Bad points – I am allergic to feather pillows and duvets (as are most asthmatics and unfortunately these days a large percentage of the population has asthma.) I always make a point letting hotels know this in advance. On arrival our bed was made with feather everything including duvet. I of course had to ask for them to be replaced. They only had 3 very hard, grotty and uncomfortable synthetic pillows in the entire hotel and one half size duvet. This in my opinion is very poor. I expect more from a 5 star hotel and certainly for the price we paid for the rooms. Our room (101) overlooked the reception and as such there was not much privacy if you opened the curtains. Also the keys look like regular keys but work with an electronic system. On our first day the key would not work and took several trips to reception to get the key functional. (I imagine this key will fail again, even one of the staff admitted it was a “dodgy one”) Had this continued we would have requested another room.

Other than the horrible bedding (which lets face it is not going to affect most travellers) the less than ideal room location and even the key inconvenience this is an elegant hotel and gorgeous retreat with a real feeling of luxury. (And I am fairly fussy). I do highly recommend saying here, it is expensive but worth the money if your budget allows.

Fabulous hotel. Great modern interior design, lovely courtyard garden full of amazing flowers. Pool a bit small but not unexpected for city centre location. Good breakfast, including freshly made speciality breads and rose petal jam! Highly recommended.

This is undoubtedly a very expensive hotel, but demonstarted true value for money with a beautiful room, gorgeous bathroom, awesome toiletries , wonderful breakfast (possibly the best hotel breakfast ever!) ,terrific dinner and tapa menus, lovely communal areas (including breakfast suspended over a real roman mosaic ), lovely pool and garden area, and fabulous service. We didn't use the spa at all but i am sure that lived up to the rest of the hotel too. A truly lovely place to stay .

  • Liked — the fit out itself of the rooms, and common areas
  • Disliked — lack of tea & coffee making facilities
