“Wow, what a change!”
Reviewed 9 October 2007

We stayed here ten years ago and again this year.

Ten years ago it was a quaint, rustic, sleepy farmhouse in the middle of a field. We had a great time.

Ten years later, my wife and I went back and found the same old farmhouse had been totally renovated (beautifully) and now sits around fields and a golf course!

Cortijo Fain changed hands and is now owned by a UK based company that has turned it into a luxury golf resort. Now, I'm the kind of person who would never choose a luxury golf resort, but I had a wonderful time at the new Cortijo Fain. The renovation is wonderful. The new accomodations and the restaurant are excellent. Everyone who worked there was very nice and helpful.

What we found at Cortijo Fain was totally unexpected, but really an excellent place! It's not the rustic farmhouse it was before. It is something totally different, but (perhaps now even more than before) well worth the trip.

What a wonderful getaway location. Cortijo Fain offered an opportunity to see the real Spain. We enjoyed the building and grounds. The staff was extremely attentive and most helpful. This is not a "normal" hotel, but more like a bed and breakfast. It is better than its official 2 star rating, but not a 4 star property. The full size bed was a treat to find (most hotels offered two twins) but the mattress was old and soft. Air conditioning was efficient and programmed with a remote control unit (no instructions provided). Food quality was average with huge portions. You eat what they eat. For dinner it was a curry-base beef stew followed by fried fish and melon balls. Breakfast was classic Spanish with sliced meats and cheese, breads, fresh fruit and rich dark coffee. If you stay at Cortijo Fain, be sure to visit the tiny village of Arcos de la Frontera (about 5 km distance) at night. The streets are alive with residents, chatting in the park, sharing coffee and drinks in sidewalk cafes. It's like a giant extended family. The drive into the village was remarkable at night. Bring a camera and tripod for a time exposure photograph. I can't believe they do not have postcards of the view as the town, and the cliff it is situated on, are artistically illuminated with floodlights.

We searched long and hard for a good place to spend our 30th wedding anniversary and in the Cortijo Fain we found the perfect one. It is situated in quiet countryside about 3 km from Arcos de la Frontera and their long driveway isolates the hotel even from the quiet road leading from Arcos. The building itself is about four hundred or more years old but has been a hotel only for the past 17. Our suite - the one shown on their website, as it turns out - was lovely, with a large bed under a hand-carved headboard, with double door leading onto a tiled patio that ran the full length of our 3-room suite. The sitting room was furnished with antique sideboards, chairs and couch and also opened onto the patio, as did the modern bathroom. Our suite and common areas featured original oil paintings evidently from the 17th century or ealier. The dining area is bright and modern, and the food delicious (although only a menu del dia, and not a full carta, is available for supper), at least during off season). There are at least two common rooms with fireplaces, including a very large one by the bar, where sitting and reading after a long day are delightful. The staff are unfailingly polite, helpful and friendly - they literally rush to fill any perceived need. We had requested champagne and flowers on our arrival, and found not only a beautiful floral arrangement and an excellent bottle of Freixenet, but a large bowl of fruits and a plate of sweets as well.

Negatives are few: the shower had only a few short minutes of hot water; there were no telephones, televisions or radios in the room (although we considered that a plus); there was heat (or air conditioning) only in the bedroom, which did little for the rest of the suite; and of course it is necessary to have a car to get anywhere from the Cortijo.

We plan to return one day with our entire family.

In brief: charming, romantic, quiet, beautiful, comparatively inexpensive, a wonderful place to stay!
