Senator Cadiz Spa Hotel
Ranked #8 of 28 Hotels in Cadiz
Reviewed 11 May 2010

Stayed at the Senator Cadiz at the begining of May 2010, the room was hot and humid, they refused to put the air conditioning on in the hotel because it was the wrong time of year? However they did move us to a better room that had bigger windows, unfortunatly by opening the windows at night attracted the mosquetoes in. The choice was to sweat it out or put up with bites. Other penny pinching items was to charge 17 euros each to use the spa/pool, no heating in the small rooftop pool, the absolute minimum tea/coffee facilities in the room. Breakfast was expensive and could be bought locally for much less. The internet had to be paid for as an extra. At over 90 Euros a night just for a room this was not good.
On the plus side: The hotel is well placed for the old town and train station, the staff were friendly and helpful and the room sizes were generous and clean.

We enjoyed this hotel so much that we stayed an extra night. Lovely clean rooms and excellent front of house staff. Very central for old town but about a ten/fifteen minute walk to the beach. Room facing central courtyard was a little noisey but the spa complex more than made up for this. Try to get the spa entrance included in the room rate as it is €20. Our first two nights did not include this but the next night did despite costing a couple of euros more. Spa is closed on Mondays.

Very pleasant hotel in a good location. Spacious, comfortable front facing rooms. However, quite noisy during the night because of deliveries. Public Parking close by but be aware that the Spa is costly and not included in the room rate.

I did not stay at this hotel, but I did use its baths (normally reserved for hotel guests only, but they gave me some sympathy). This was back in March of 2007, so I apologize for the late review, but I feel I must comment on at least the baths of this hotel because I enjoyed them so much.
The hotel is located in a tiny plaza right in the middle of the old town portion of Cadiz, and from all impressions the rooms and general facilities seemed very nice -- not backpacker boutique hotel, but then again, I did not stay in the rooms. The baths were simply awesome. They have start and stop times (at 2 hour intervals), so the same group of people are in there with you as you rotate amongst the wet sauna, cold pool, hot pool, luke-worm pool, and dry sauna. There are many different pools, and you just rotate among everything at your own pace. Most people in the dry sauna took their clothes completely off and had towels wrapped around them, but everyone is fully clothed in the rest of the stations.
Anyway, I would go stay at this hotel JUST for the baths. I think it cost about 20 euros for the two hours. Truly awesome experience.

We had booked the hotel based on the rather positive reviews and the fact that it had a pool and a spa where we thought we could relax after a long drive.
When we arrived on a Sunday evening and were assigned to our room, we were very disappointed, as the whole place made a run down impression on us, and we felt the room was rather ugly, old, and not very clean, at least according to our standards. But then again, we had only booked for one night and were tired so we decided to stay.
We then wanted to go swimming - however the access to the swimming pool was locked.
We then found out that it closes at 8 pm; it was shortly after 8 pm.
We thought great, then we will go to the spa, that was said to close only at 10 pm. However, we were informed that children were not allowed, and would only be allowed durring a limited period of the day starting at noon.
We said OK, we will go tomorrow at noon then. Again, we were informed that this would not be possible, as the spa would be closed on Monday all day to give staff a day off.
Of course we had not been informed on this at booking, and found none of this information on the hotel website......
The parking is a lift with access in a narrow street, and we found it to be rather a hassle to get in even with a medium-sized car.
We felt that the only positive point was the staff at reception, they were friendly and efficient.
At the end of the day, from our point of view this hotel confirms that four stars are not a guarantee for a good stay.

Stayed 3 nts as part of a tour we planned ourselves. Arrived by train from Seville and walked to the hotel. Booked direct with hotel. Excellent reception staff, very comfy pleasant 'patio' moorish-style (covered) central lounge with plenty of seating, peaceful. Free soft drinks and cava all day for residents (on a table by reception)- most welcome after a hot walk. A bar and restaurant off to one side. A big improvement on our Seville hotel the previous 2 nts. Huge rooms (dark coloured walls, any longer than 3nts might have resulted in nightmares!) but excellent bed and bathroom. We did room only, lots of cafes in strolling distance if you want breakfast. Didn't try dinner, restaurant seemed v quiet and we preferred to eat out (go out of hotel, right and first right, about 150yds up try 'Show Tapas' on the left near the top of that road...very good modern tapas and great wine). Bar area very pleasant in hotel but again hardly used by anyone for the 3days we were there and some staff seemed a bit grumpy in there (probably as they had no-one to serve!). If the smiling helpful reception staff could nip behind the bar it would be great!
Hotel is brilliantly placed, 5mins level walk to bus station (we have a digi' image of the local timetable if anyone wants it!), 10mins level walk train station, right amid shops and restaurants. Use the red tour bus (11euros) for a day to get your bearings...it's nice just to sit on it and do the round trip!
Didn't use hotel spa while there.
Got train to Jerez for the day, so cheap, quick and easy, about 3 euros each way from memory, on our departure day we got the bus to Malaga, just over 4hrs, very scenic route and good value at about 18 euros each
