“Friendly, laid-back, in a quiet neighborhood.”

Our family of five with three young children (ages 9, 7, 4) traveled to Spain to spend 6 days in Andalucia. We wanted a beach and a pool for the kids and were able to enjoy both of these at Tryp Guadalmar. The rooms were comfortable but not fancy. The rooms have tile floors, decent air conditioning and nice shelves in the closet to store clothes. There are no clocks in the room, and we only found one outlet to charge our devices. There is free wifi in the hotel, but when you turn a device off, you have to re-log in each time.

When we first arrived, we did not have adjoining rooms, despite our request. The hotel staff worked hard to help us out. We had two separate rooms for one night and then the next night were in the adjoining rooms we requested. The staff handled it great.

The breakfast buffet was satisfying with a good selection of Spanish breakfast items (cheeses, bread with olive oil, cheeses and ham!). We skipped lunch and dinner at the hotel, finding it less than exciting, really more of a repeat of breakfast. But there were plenty of local restaurants that served excellent alternatives!

The beach is pebbly, but at low tide the boys didn't mind at all. We rented beach chairs the last two days there and were really comfortable. My boys loved the warm pool but I enjoyed doing laps in the slightly cooler outdoor pool. Be aware there will be topless women sunbathing on the beach! This is still the Costa del Sol and my American boys were a little surprised at first. At this hotel, you have to put a deposit down on towels and don't forget to shower before you get into the pool. It's the standard in Europe. You should also bring swim caps unless you want to buy them there.

The hotel doesn't have an ATM and there isn't one in the neighborhood. We didn't learn the ride the buses but there was a stop right outside the hotel. We found some lovely places to eat within walking distance (Tick Tack, El Rincon, and Chiringuito on the beach). We rented a car and found driving around the South of Spain to be really easy and friendly. Be careful walking around the sidewalks, people don't scoop their pets' poop.

Try to learn a little Spanish before you go, it will make things easier. The hotel staff speaks some English but it's better to meet them halfway.

Room Tip: We were on the 7th floor facing the ocean. It was very nice! We were on the second floor for one nig...

we stayed for 14 days and found all the staff very helpful there were always plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas at the pool area the beach is just out of the gate the breakfast offered a wide variety and covered most tastes the dinner also had a choice for everyone and the hot food was cooked while you waited if you asked there was a French tour operator on site organising games { which we found quite entertaining to watch) there is a bus outside the hotel into Malaga which is cheap and frequent overall we found the hotel to be very good for the price

We booked this hotel as a relaxing last night place for our trip. It has the potential - great swimming pools and easy access to two nearby beaches (walking distance). The ground floor of the hotel looks amazing - clean, sleek, modern. Unfortunately, the rooms are very dated, with floor mounted air-cons that just aren't efficient or powerful enought to work. The decor is 70s-esque, the mini-bars unstocked and the room service non-existent. The food is mass-produced and supermarket bought and we were surprised to see so many French package holiday tourists there. The food was not great at all, but the little cafe on the beach in front of the hotel is reasonably priced and makes very tasty seafood. Unfortunately, the gate that allows you access from the hotel grounds to the beach closes completely at 10pm, making you walk all the way around the hotel to gain access again. This is despite the gate having an access code keypad that you would think would enable it to be accessible at all hours. Stay here if you want everything done for you and don't want to see Spain proper. Don't if you're more adventurous.

Have stayed here on many occasions whilst flying in and out of Malaga. On each occasion the hotel has spent money on providing upgraded services which is great to see. The rooms are fine, the hotel is always spotless and the breakfast options are really good. First class swimming pool and right next to the beach. The Sevando chiringuito right outside the back door serves amazing fish and they are building a brand new state of the art next door. Finally so close to the airport which is so handy.

We booked this hotel last year and we were taken by the reviews of past guests and the pictures of the hotel. The hotel we can't fault, it's beautiful, amazing grounds, lovely rooms, well kept and great room service. We did think we were in France rather than Spain as the entertainment was geared towards the French, nobody else got a look in. This leads me on to the restaurant. When we we arrived and went down for our first breakfast, we thought yes, this is great, full on selection of continental and cooked, bread's, etc. Came to evening, hot plated were cold, we complained, took away our plates, but nothing was done with the food still sitting on the buffet, We were half board, ended up going out for dinner to either Malaga or Torremolinos, very disappointed, as we were so looking forward to our trip. The couple of times we ate in the the restaurant in the evening when the food was cold, we did complain, but it fell on deaf ears, it was like they knew it was happening, we would go up to the grill were the chefs were cooking, and if they already had cooked meats and they were sitting waiting they would expect you take them rather than wait on the fresher more hotter food being prepared to be eaten first rather than taking the colder food lying for god knows how long. Anyway, even after complaining that the food was cold, the staff were really not that bothered and this highlighted that this is probably a factor that has been brought up in the past but nothing has been done to address it. When we checked out on the morning of our departure, we thought, OK, this will be the time we can state our opinion, but no, we were only advised our invoice was clear and that was that, nothing was asked as to whether we had a good stay or anything. so. after a good long blow hard blast of steam, nice hotel, comfortable rooms, fabulous, location on the beach, very quiet, and if you want to be French and not Spanish, then this is the hotel for you, food is dire to say the least, sorry guy's, you have let me down

Nice hotel (10 min away from the airport) near to the beach for a short stay. Good all-in price !
Buffet meals, a lot of choices.
Friendly staff.
airco in the room was too noisy (room 425) :-(
(a little bit dated room)
nice pool and garden enough beachchairs.
bus-stop before the hotel.
barely noise from the airplanes.

You either love this hotel or hate it. I love it because it is quiet, clean, right on the beach and away from traffic, 10 minutes from the airport and there is nothing to do but relax by the pool or on the beach. Those who hate it, don't like being below the flight path into Malaga's airport, find nothing to do there and dislike the difficult of finding somewhere to eat that is outside the hotel. That said, I have just returned from a four night stay, and that was just right in length. The hotel is within a residential area and apart from the excellent three beach restaurants that provide very good fish dishes at reasonable prices (mussels at 6 euros), there are only two other eating places within walking distance - both more 'bars that cook some food'. My wife and I ate in the hotel restaurant at their buffet supper on one evening at a cost of 18 euros per head, that included half a bottle of wine each. Despite the place opening at 7.30pm, we found at 8.15pm, some of the food was cold, the fish dried-up and the risotto stiff. Thankfully, self service microwaves are available. Breakfasts' are outstanding - lots of choice from freshly cooked 'full English' to continental food that is beautifully presented and one of the best breakfast choices I have ever experienced.

This was our third visit to Tryp Guadalmar in ten years, the last occasion being five years ago. Little had changed. The public areas have recently had a make-over and now look very modern and stylish, though the bar area is a little cold and stark. It seems that the hotel is now under the Melia Hotels network and they have invested in the buffet restaurant, which was never open five years ago. This seems to be as a result of a link up with French tour operator 'Fram'. They now provide an all inclusive package, and an animateur team of four young French folk who try to get the predominantly French clientele playing games and exercising around the wonderful pool area.

Sadly, Melia Hotels have not yet invested in updating the guest rooms They are very clean but a little sad and tired and lacking in TLC. Some paint work is chipped and worn and the balconies suffering from wind and sea damage. The air conditioning to rooms is effective but out-dated for a four star hotel. Likewise, there are some staff that need retraining in customer care. The older evening receptionist with the 'fly-away' hair that met us on arrival was unwelcoming, abrupt and barely helpful. When I asked her what floor our room was on, she pointed to the lift! When I told her water was flooding through the ceiling of our room she huffed and puffed and eventually found us another room. She really does need to be moved to the 'back-office'. She Is not suitable 'front-of-house'! Similarly, some of the bar staff from five years ago still occupy their roles and despite my good tipping with EVERY drink purchased at the main bar and the pool bar they barely offered a smile or a thanks. Melia Hotels Ltd. has to look at new staff or retraining, if they are to retain longstanding customers and the Fram contract. The French can be more fussy than the English!

The downside of being 10 minutes from the airport is that guests are at least 30 minutes by road from Malaga. However, the #5 autobus from outside the hotel runs every 30 minutes into the centre of town and at 1.30 euros for the 40 minute journey, it is very good value.

Yes, despite everything, we loved our four night stay this year and relaxing around the pool with its many sun loungers or using the indoor pool (you need a swimming hat). There is some building work going on opposite the hotel on the beach. It looks like a new beach restaurant and I would expect it to all be complete by August - the roof has just gone on! It was not excessively noisy during our stay (the French animateurs were noisier!) and we had a room with a beach view and overlooking the building work. (Room #428 at 88 euros per night). If Melia Hotels can up-date the guest rooms then I will still love Tryp Guadalmar.
