“Out of sight and out of mind but worth it.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 November 2012

This site is accessed from the west, from San Julian. If you come off the A7 for San Julian, go down a little way, almost to the sea and turn left toward what is Malaga. Continue 500 yards until you come to the river. Park for free in the residential road (near an all weather football pitch) and go up to higher level. Turn left and walk north another 400 yards to a concrete bridge. Cross it and a signboard will explain the free site. Quite a mix of birds. Our first visit last week. Most likely someone walkiing around will be able to point out the birds if you do not reconise them. Quite a few new sightings for us and very enjoyable in the sunshine.

“Unexpected variety of birds at all seasons”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 November 2012

This place is hemmed in between the city, the motorway and the sea. It's the remains of ancient wetlands at the River Guadalhorce estuary. It can be accessed from the beach, though I believe there may be another access point nearer the city. The bird life is surprising and varies according to season. You may see stilts, spoonbills, bluethroats (in the winter) white headed duck and various other duck varieties (depending on season,) and birds of prey, particularly during migration. I've been at different times of the year and there was always plenty of avian activity and always some birdwatchers. There are several hides with benches, but no other resting places or benches, which is a shame.Take water as there are no facilities and you dry out pretty quick. If you leave your car on the southern side of the reserve, leave no valuables as I know a person whose vehicle was "visited" while he was birding there.

“Guadalhorce Nature Reserve”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 February 2012

The nature reserve is on the western edge of Malaga, near the airport, and encompasses the river estuary. There's a path system through it and some bird watching hides. I'm not a bird watcher, but there seemed to be quite a lot, though mostly ducks.

Despite traffic noise it's tranquil and lovely, and at the sea end is a lovely beach. Worth a trip if you like walking and nature.

There's a web site here http://www.andalucia.com/environment/protect/guadalhorce.htm
but they don't say that you can get to either end of the area using the #10 bus from the city centre.
