We were actually looking for somewhere else, but came across this little gem. Authentic Spanish tapas, great atmosphere, and very helpful staff. Deserved their tip! Get there early as it's very popular.

Pollo (chicken) strips, croquettes and potatoes brava...if you can find Las Merchanas amidst the maze of alleys in Malaga, pull up a stool and order cervezas and tapas. Nothing fancy in terms of decor but the service is prompt and courteous, Spanish only. Pointing helps, lol. Beer is cold and the croquettes will literally melt in your mouth. If there was an issue with our order, it wasn't really their fault - caldillio pinta roja soup was on the menu buy not in season. Oh well, I guess we'll have to go back! Yes, worth the * * * * * Stars!

Las Merchanas is tucked away in the backstreets, but is definitely worth the effort to find. The restaurant specialises in tapas all of which we tried were excellent. The waiter was really friendly and helpful in suggesting the best dishes of the day. His recommendation of fried KingKlip was delicious, as was the cod. The place gets really busy both lunch and evening with locals, so you may have to wait for a table but it's worth it.

I found this lovely tapas bar on here on the bus to Malaga. With the use of maps it was easy to find. The waitress was fabulous and although wasn't fluent in English helped us with the menu as it was in Spanish. She recommend half portions and four dishes for four of us. We had fried aubergines, chicken wings, black pudding, fish bits (bit chewy for me but others didn't mind) and beautiful croquettes. There was also breadsticks and bread on the table. We had a jug of sangria and the bill was an unbelievable 30 euros for the four of us. Staff were friendly and helpful and we hope to return before we leave. Gracias

If you like to go Spanish, visit Las Merchanas. It is a bit off the beaten track in the old city center of Málaga, yet the food is good at fair prices and the ambiance is unique, especially if you are a foreigner without in depth knowledge of Semana Santa in Andalucía. Find a table outside to have an open air dinner or inside to enjoy the typical cofradía music. I wuld go back to Las Merchanas, maybe also for lunch as they serve a wide ranges of montaditos on bread.
