“Great location for a city break.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 March 2010

I know this area of Malaga really well, as I grew up here. So I knew what to expect with regards to the location.
When me and my boyfriend arrived to a lovely reception we were very impressed. The room was a good size, perfect for a short break. Balcony looked out onto the bull ring and if you looked to the left could see the lovely view of the castle. Old style TV in the room with the usual spanish channels, and one english channel - sky news. The bed was massive! and the pillows were very comfy. Good sized bathroom with lots of goodies (shampoo, shower gel, toothbrush, ect..... even shoe polish) and it also had a hairdryer. The shower was great, so warm I could stand in it for ages.
The room all in all, was perfect. Decorated to a high standard and very clean. Maids came everyday too. Mini bar is very reasonably priced.
The hotel has a lovely bar/eating area, with a big TV where we watched the football one night. Great atmosphere and a nice place to end the night with a cup of hot choco.
There is also the Spa and gym which we enjoyed. The spa is open from 430pm - 930pm every day except sunday for cleaning. There is also the roof top which has sun beds (free)
The only small downside is the lack of wifi in the hotel. There is a computer free to use near the bar though.
A lovely 10min walk to the centre of Malaga, it is really a great place to stay and relax.

Considering we got to Malaga by flight from Scotland with three words of Spanish between us, the hotel was extremely easy to get to, Bus no 19 from the airport terminal will take you straight through for 1.10 Euros each.

The hotel is located at the eastern end of the old town, between the harbour and the bull ring. Check-in was faultless with no time wasted. The room was spotless and well appointed if not hugely spacious, with a balcony and a great view over the bullring and the Castle. The beds were large and comfortable, the bathroom spotless. The air-conditioning worked as did the in-room safe.

Breakfast was a great spread and would satisfy a wide variety of tastes. The breakfasting hours are very generous, extending from 7am to 11.30am, probably as a result of the limited capacity. Suffice to say, if everyone turned up at 10am, there would be a lot of standing around.

The city centre is a brief 10 minute walk away. There are a couple of fantastic Tapas restaurants just around the corner and we spent the large part of our first evening in Malaga sipping sherry and working our way through a tremendous array of delicacies.

The staff are universally helpful and welcoming. There is a compact gym and a rooftop jacuzzi and sauna though I didn't try these out.

The only real downside is the compact elevator: you'll struggle to get more than four people in at one time. A very minor issue though.

Hotel Maestranza was chosen due to both the positive reviews on Tripadvisor and pot luck that both my wife and I chose the Hotel at exactly the same time on two different PC's, something so spooky it had to be right or was it?

The Hotel from the outside is very plain and either the recession or the winter had taken its toll on the shops below as all were boarded up and closed down, this gave a poor first impression of the Hotel and the reception area did little to impress for a four star hotel either. Check in was swift and pleasant and we were given a room on the eigth floor overlooking the hillside directly infront, the Plaza de Toros below our window, The Alcazba to the left, the castle on top of the hill in front and the sea to the right, so absolutely no complaints here. The room was warm, clean and of average size for a city hotel (Not to be confused with the four star hotels situated just down the coast where rooms are like football pitches).
Where the Hotel wins is its position, a £22 Euro ride in a Taxi from the Airport or a £1.10 Euro ride on the bus (Both drivers tried to emulate F1 racers so time is only five minutes in difference) The bus stops on the Island directly infront of the Hotel (Plaza de Toros)
The Hotel is situated in the resort area of Malaga and the streets around the hotel have a costas feel to them as you walk down to the beach (100 yds and two minute walk), between the hotel and beach there are a number of restaurants and a Burger King.
Oposite the hotel is 24 hour supermarket.
Breakfast in the hoel was very impressive and also very relaxed (Winter) I would imagine in the summer this can be different as there are only 17 tables to meet the needs of the ninety rooms?
Breakfast offers all the normal city hotel food, fruit, yogurt, cereal, cooked option, with the added incentive of fresh fruit skewers and chocolate fountain.
The walk to Malaga along the main road is a delight and takes around ten minutes to reach the city centre.
The tour bus runs from a stop just around the corner in front of the Bul Ring and costs Euro 16 (well worth it just to get you up to the castle) The castle is 2 Euro entry fee and offers fantastic views of the city. When leaving the bus at the castle just walk back down to the last vista (about 200 yds ) as this offers the finest panoramic views of the city.
For shoppers, the new and main shopping district is over the bridge heading back to the airport (Tour bus stops here also) or its a forty minute walk from the hotel.
Eating out is varried on par with prices in the UK.
If I had to rate the hotels star quality I would lean towards three rather than four, I think the spa gains the fourth star?
For those who have never visited a spanish city only a resort, beware not everyone speaks english?
Taxi vs Bus from Airport - Bus wins everytime as Taxi drivers adjust the mnimum charge for visitors, if only they wern't so obvious when doing it!

We stayed for 5 days end December. We had 2 rooms (one for 3 teenagers and one for their parents). The strong points are it's ideal location - close to bus stops , the beach and the town centre only a 5-10 minute walk away. One has nice views as well. We enjoyed the jacuzzi, steam bath and sauna (all free) after our long days of walkign and visiting. It is on the 13th floor. Outside is a terrace for sunbathing

Breakfast is on the first floor and offers all you need. The hotel was not too busy so we could enjoy breakfast the way we usually like it. There are a couple of good restaurants in the neighbourhood, but also a few pizzeria's.

It is very good quality for what you pay and especially the fact it is not located in the busy own centre gives it sa certain distinct feature.

By the way - do not spend money on a cab from the airport, just take bus 19 ( for 1.10 euro ) - the last stop is at approx. 75 meters of your hotel.

First off if you are connecting through France there is a 25% your luggage won't make it - so pack accordingly. Luckily the hotel provides a basket of soaps, toothbrushes & a razor so we were able to handle a 1 day delay of the luggage. My room had a wonderful view of the castle & Alcazaba & the bull ring. Also there is a taxi stand at the corner which was great because the tour buses don't pick up in the city - you have to go to a bus stop and when you get done you have to walk 5 blocks to an obscure taxi stand (1 time no taxis were there). Also one day I forgot to lock the safe and everything was there. The rooms are nicely decorated, beds a little hard (European way) but I loved the balcony and beach nearby.

Nice rooms, very helpful front desk, breakfast definitly worth the extra money. Since we had a very early flight on our last day, they let us check out the night before and prepared a picnic box of breakfast items for us the next morning. The wi-fi in the rooms rarely worked and they only had one computer for guests to use.

Overall an excellent experience. VERY friendly and helpful staff, excellent location, very good breakfast with sufficient variety. We didn't realize that some rooms are for smokers so if you want to avoid that deep smelly smokey aroma in your room/matress, make sure you request this!
