Hans Christian Andersen visited Malaga in October, 1862. He was captivated by the beauty of this city by the sea and wrote about it. The statue was commissioned by the Danish Royal Family as a gift to the City of Malaga. The artist was Jose Maria Cordoba and he made it in 2003 and it was inaugurated in 2005. Andersen is shown wearing a top hat and has a duck in his briefcase (an allusion to one of his stories). This is a favorite place for tourists to take photos beside the statue.
