“Excellent hotel once you find it”
Reviewed 26 June 2012

We found Malaga streets very confusing due to the one-way system, passed by the hotel once, and had to complete another circular tour of Malaga before turning immediately right after the station. Thank goodness the station is signed! From then onwards all was fine. The hotel is shiny, spacious and modern. We had an excellent bathroom and recommend the snack bar where you can eat outside till the early hours of the morning, served by very friendly staff. We paid to park outside the hotel in the private car-park (17 euros a day) and walked into the old centre of Malaga to visit the Carmen Thyssen museum - fabulous! When you leave the hotel, a 10 minute drive along one straight road brings you straight to the airport. We had to stand outside the room to use the free wi fi but that's a minor irritation. Would definitely stay here again.

We were only staying at this hotel for one night before joining a cruise ship. The location to Malaga cruise port was ideal. Only 13 euros by taxi to the ship. We had booked the shuttle coach from the airport but in future we would use the train. The hotel is above the station and there is a train service from the airport to this station. The same area encloses a large shopping mal where there are quite a few restaurants as well. Walk out of the station main exit and stright ahead is a bus stop for the open top hop on-hop off bus tour of Malaga. great value at 17 euros for a 24 hour ticket. We did the full tour without getting off then stayed on and got off at a couple of places of interest. Close to the hotel is a Super Mercado (Supermarket) if you want to buy anything you may have forgotten or cheap drinks. Back to the hotel itself, it is very modern, rooms are clean and modern and the free internet service works well. Breakfast buffet was excellent. Staff were very pleasant and helpfull. We would definitely stay here again when we visit Malaga for a little longer. For anyone doing a cruise who are wondering what arrangements to make for your transfer from the ship to the airport I would recommend you just get a taxi. There was hundreds of them and it only cost 30 euros.

This hotel is brilliant in every way. It is located above the train station so easy access to and from the airport. Staff could not do enough for you and rooms are very clean and spacious with a lot of modern facilities. I cannot give the hotel enough praise. We spent 3 nights here before joining a cruise ship, on our return to Malaga we had a 12 hour wait before our flight back to Belfast and the Hotel stored our luggage (free of charge) for the day so we could enjoy our last day in sunny Spain.

Room Tip: All rooms we saw were equally good.

Fantastic hotel in a great location. In particular, the restaurant and bar staff were AMAZING! I think it was Laura in the restaurant and Raoul (master of the Caipirioska) in the bar in particular that went above and beyond for us. We would not usually eat in the hotel on holiday but the food, drinks and service here were so good that we ate in the restaurant every night of our stay. Also the best breakfast experience we have ever had abroad.

A special thank you to the waitress in the restaurant during our stay, she was exceptional and an asset to the hotel.

The only critical point I would make is that our room wasn't fully serviced each morning (fridge not stocked up) and the front desk staff could be more cheerful but neither of those things detracted from our stay.

Would love to go back!!

We stayed here over the weekend and it was a beautiful hotel! Very modern and our little one loved the slide in the reception ha! The room was clean, well presented, nice bathroom and great aircon! (much appreciated when it was 36 degrees) great location and the train station is on the door step. Would defo stay there again and would look at the barcelo chain when visiting anywhere else.

We booked into the Barceló partly because of the good reviews but mainly as it was the closest hotel to the train station where we were arriving following our tour around parts of Andalucía. The good reviews are not wrong. The hotel is fairly new, the room was excellent with a massive seven foot bed and a really modern bathroom etc. The reception team were very helpful. Breakfast was excellent. We did have a drink from the bar on a couple of occasions. This is a little strange as the waitress just appears, I think from the 1st floor restaurant. There isn’t physically a bar in reception but there are nice tables and chairs inside and out. It worked for us.

The area immediately surrounding the hotel is nothing to write home about really. Just a general city centre, lots of ugly high rise buildings, traffic etc. We did find a really nice tapas bar just down the road and just past that a bar that actually served a “large” beer as opposed to a small beer masquerading as a beer grande!

It takes about 30 minutes to walk from the hotel down to the beach and about 20 minutes to the Cathedral area. I am sure that there would be a bus to catch instead but we were happy to walk.

I am more than happy with our decision to stay at the Barceló but if we were to stay in Malaga again I think I would stay nearer to area by the Cathedral. This is in no way a criticism of the hotel itself but the area around the Cathedral is much nicer. However if you are just using Malaga as a base to travel out to different cities in Andalucía and/or resorts along the coast then the Barceló is definitely for you and I would 100% return in those circumstances.

This hotel was perfect for our purposes. The rooms were a decent size, nice linens, comfortable bed, clean, modern, well decorated.

We arrived late at night, caught the train straight to the hotel and picked the car up from Hertz next door to the hotel in the morning. It was slightly more expensive than we were expecting to pay in Malaga but it is worth it for the convience of location if you are just passing through Malaga to explore Andalucia.

Tip: if you want to walk around Malaga it is probably best to walk the 10mins into town rather than drive (we tried to drive but had to give up as the parking is very limited). Also, we didn't have breakfast at the hotel, there are plenty of cafes in the complex next door to grab a quick/cheap breakfast.
