We stayed here after a train journey from Cadiz, before heading back to the airport next day,so it was a perfect location, as it is right next door to the station where you also get the airport train. You can enter it direct from the station.
It is part of a big chain,so lacking in some of the more personal touches you might get somewhere smaller, but it was very clean and comfortable.Breakfast was good with a wide choice of hot and cold food.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a high floor so you get a great view across the city.

We stayed here for a couple of nights before moving on to Seville. The hotel is perfectly located for the independent traveler as it is right on the main train station, just 8 minutes from the airport and with high speed links to the rest of Spain.
The room was spacious and extremely comfortable with a huge bed, armchair, writing desk etc. Tea & coffee making facilities would have been nice but you can't have everything. The air con worked perfectly well and we were able to set it to a comfortable temperature. The automatic window shade was very effective and almost totally blocked out external daylight when required. The room was also perfectly soundproofed - we heard no trains or traffic at all during our stay.
The decor was quirky, presumably inspired by Picasso. We didn't use the restaurant or bar during our stay: why would you when you can get perfectly good food & drink for a quarter of the price in one of the many bars/restaurants within a minute's walk?
The only real downside is that it's a 20 minute walk to the historic centre of Malaga. The best way to get around this is to take the open top bus which stops right in front of the hotel - it stops at all the major points of interest and your ticket is valid for 24 hours. Even so, if I was staying for any length of time in Malaga I would probably opt to stay somewhere nearer the centre. However, for a short stay involving onward travel I would definitely stay here again as you can't beat it for convenience and comfort.

We stayed at this hotel for a couple of nights as a jumping off point as it was well located with the train station below and bus station across the street. The shopping mall downstairs was very convenient for restaurants. The hotel is very modern, clean and new. Our room was spotless and the bed was very comfortable. The washrooms were well apointed and the shower was really nice. It's not right in the heart of the city, takes about 20 minutes to walk or a cheap cab ride. The walk was easy but some areas might not feel that safe for female travellers depending on the route taken.

Would definitely stay at this hotel again though if in Malaga.

I decided for this hotel only one day before my travel as the price was the same for my first option but according to this site, the hotel seemed much better and nicer. So I said why don't give it a try!
The hotel itself is ultra modern and funky but very cold, lacking of any soul, unpersonal could say.
The check in was slow even if I filled in all the details as the rate was a prepaid one. The lady needed more than 15 ' to assign me a room. I asked for a king bed (during the reservation) and did not get one, I asked for the one with a desk in front the bed and did not get it either.
I wasn't offered any kind of information, anyything at all. When I asked for breakfast, I was advised this was not included in the price, but could offer me one for 18€ !! (I ate breakfast just off the station at D'quadro Lux bar which provided good food, great service and cheap rates-paid 3 € for delicious breakfast)

Late check out is subject to additional fee, as well as any other extras as slippers, bathrobes, even an ironing as they do not provide any iron, but instead they offer laundery paying service!!!

The room was very modern and well appointed. All in grey, white and silver shadows. So did not understand why the closed with minibar was brown?
Wonderful lighting but could not set it to the desired form for watching the TV for example.
The window shade was excellent with automatic movement.
The bathroom with walk-in shower was modern, with good water presure but somehow little functional.
The bed was comfy and the pillows very good. The a/c however could not be set to a desired temperature and was at full speed even if you made a 23 degree choice. So during the night the room was freezing and I had to swich it off for the entire duration of my stay.
TV was middle sized plasma with a good choice of programmes in different languages.
No iron nor coffee machine in the room, but this is quite common in Spanish hotel chains in Spain.
I am surprised as a lot of people said the isolation was great. Well, I could hear the doors closing in the hallway all the time. Especially anoying was a housekeeping doing that at 7 am!!! Even if my room was on the 7th floor, I could hear cars and other traffic on the road.
As this happened almost in all hotels I stayed in the past 10 years, I now use earplugs, so doesn't really bother me anymore.
The floor is cheap laminate and after only one year is already showing its age, as well as other small details like sliding doors in the bathroom.
All in all very nice room but is not practical at all, everything there is nicely put but not for using but for looking! A writting desk is useless and the night tables are also not serving their purpose.

The common areas are ultra modern and empty at all times. The bar in the lobby is empty with no staff, the hall is small and the reception is claustrofobic. When entering the hotel you do not have a sensation that you arrived to a hotel, no sofas or sitting areas, but very state-of-the-art tables and chairs....for looking at!
There is an internet space which is empty and abandonedmwith no computers. The restaurant on the 1st floor was empty at 2130. Gym is small and claustrofobic. If you want to use a steam room, you must adivse the reception beforehand to swich it on, and there is no locker room, so I believe you have to come naked from your room!
The staff is stiff and not proactive at all. You need to ask for everything and only then, they would reply. They do not know anything about the distances, the buses or other places of interest in town.
As everybody said this property is located above the train station but for me, as a good walker this was not a problem. Malaga is small city so you can walk everywhere and besides it is very convinient if you arrive by train, bus or plane.

I would recommend this hotel only for a short transit stay as the design overrules the functionality

Room Tip: Sea side for a better view

We stayed with young children. They have great value interconnecting rooms but you need to book direct as these don't show as options on the booking sites. Super convenient for getting around the region as it's at the main train station and adjacent to the mall with its shops and restaurants. Fun, quirky decor, loved by kids and adults alike. Bar stools that look like loo seats, a slide down the lobby, lots of picasso'esque touches. Staff were very friendly and efficient. We ate both in the bar and in the main restaurant. Very good value and quality. Excellent wine list in main restaurant. Would happily revisit.

The Barcelo Malaga is very modern, a little quirky, centrally located by the main railway station and a large shopping mall with taxis on tap 24/7 for the short cheap hop into the centre of town, to the marina, or the airport. Sadly lacking a pool or anywhere pretty to sit outside, but good bedrooms, comfy beds, very quiet, and brilliant showers. Good buffet breakfast....no kettle in rooms....I took my own!
