“Splendid hotel with proximity to Malaga's airport and train and bus stations”
Reviewed 21 April 2014

Stayed at Barcelo Malaga just one night, but it was an excellent stay and I came away very impressed with the hotel.

The hotel is about as centrally located in Malaga as you can get, especially for travelers who are arriving from other parts of Spain via the city's primary train/bus station (Maria Zambrano). The hotel is connected to MZ Station, which also provides quick 3-stop, 8 minute train transfers to Malaga/Costa del Sol International Airport. That said, if you are traveling with a quick turnaround or only in Malaga for a few days, the Barcelo is an excellent home base.

The Barcelo is a 15 minute walk from the really touristy spots in Malaga's city center, but the walk is carefree and pleasant especially given Malaga's lovely climate. If walking is not your idea of fun, you can also take the commuter rail from the main train station in the opposite direction of the airport to Malaga Centro Station. It is literally an 120 second ride.

The hotel is modern, clean and well-appointed. Stayed in a basic room, which was quite nice so it doesn't seem like there is any need to upgrade to a more expensive room. Got an excellent night's sleep there as the bed was extremely comfortable and the staff was very friendly. Only complaint would be that the Wi-Fi was very, very slow.

Despite that, I would definitely stay at the Barcelo again as its location, modernity and convenience are not matched by other hotels that I have stayed in Malaga previously.

The hotel's website says that it is 3 minutes from the train station. This is incorrect, it is about 30 seconds from the station! Nice big rooms, excellent bathrooms and good quality sheets, towels etc

The Barceló Malaga is a nice modern hotel conveniently located next to the main train station in Malaga. Despite its location there was no noticeable noise from either traffic or trains in the bedrooms. It’s about 15 minutes’ walk into the old town and 20 minutes to the new harbour area.

My standard bedroom was quite large, with a desk to work at and a comfortable lounge chair. The bathroom was fitted with a large multi jet shower but no bath.

Each room has a large window that spreads along the length of the exterior wall which made the room feel light and airy. At night electric black out blinds can be used to shut out any street lighting. There is an in room safe and Wi-Fi (get key from reception) which are both within the room rate, which is always a bonus.

Like the rest of the hotel the bar area is ultra-modern although I found it was a triumph of style over function as all the seating in the bar looked trendy but was not very comfortable (see photo). One unusual feature of this hotel is that there is a slide from the first floor down into the bar area. Its just a gimmick really but younger guests seemed to like it!

All the staff seems friendly and efficient and overall service was very good.

I only eat breakfast in the hotel. There was a good selection of hot and cold fare and in the main all the food tasted well cooked and fresh. The only exception was that their idea of bacon seemed to be warm boiled ham smothered in olive oil (which is not the first time I have experienced this in Spain).

Room Tip: Basic rooms are very nice so I wouldn't upgrade to anything better.

The Hotel is located within the station, the hotel rooms are quiet and the staff were very hospitable. Bathroom and Bedroom spotless with free toiletries. I only stayed 1 night and as I was travelling the next day by train the location was ideal. The area around the station is somewhat bland but there is a local shopping mall which includes a large supermarket. The train station is very quiet compared to major London train stations which is a blessing and there is a pleasant cafe to sit and have coffee and a snack before catching the train. I marked the sleep quality down only because you either have to have the blinds completely up or down, and when down, the room is pitch black. Other than that perfect.

The hotel itself was easy to check in and out, the staff (with the little interaction we required only to check in and out) was helpful and friendly, and the rooms were very nice. The overall "vibe" of the hotel was neat (the hallways are pretty cool even, hard to explain), the slide from the 2nd floor to the 1st floor (yes, a slide!) was quirky and neat, and the fact that this is directly connected to the train station makes it ideal if you are going to make use of Malaga trains. FYI: Taking a cab from the airport into Malaga central cost about 20 euros plus what you'd want to tip. We took the train from this hotel/train station back to the airport when we left for 1.50 euros per person! Do know that this hotel is about a 15 minute walk to the central area near the cathedral, but even a cab from this hotel to that exact cathedral area was only about 6 euros.
Overall, my wife and I really enjoyed staying here the one night we used it.

Although we spent one night only but it was enough to rate this hotel as excellent. If you were coming from Malaga airport just take the train and in 3 stops you will be in the hotel as there is a special entrance to the hotel from the train station. The centre of the town and the promenade are only 20-minute walk from the hotel where you can enjoy the amazing unique features of Malaga. The rooms are spacious with a flat screen TV containing different channels including BBC world. The bathroom is amazing. There is airconditioning and a free WiFi. The breakfast was delicious containing all varieties of food and omelette the way you want can be cooked while you wait. Mostly the reception staff was so good and helpful with a wide smile on their face. We highly recommend this hotel to those who like to spend few nice nights in Laga
