No doubt this golf course is one of the best, even for us not playing golf. The view from the terrace is wonderful and the best place to meet after a round at the course.
But the service and food is not at all to the expected standard. We have visited the restaurant on a frequent basis over the years and after several incidents with food that could not be eaten or had to be returned for further preparation, we have just had light snacks and beverages. Based on the rumor that there was a new chef brought in, we decided to try out a full course. Unfortunately, the food was still not good and service was below zero, if possible. We were a party of 6 starting with gambas pil pil. The shrimps were tough and the oil was not very hot, so obviously they had stayed in the oil too long, during or after cooked.
3 of the party decided to try out the entrecote piece for min 3 persons, requested cooked medium. The meat was cooked so raw that it was not even hot inside, but the retina was black, so obviously the chef had used too high heat and just burned it quickly.
Returning the meat, waiter just left the french fries and vegetable on the table, and I had to go into the kitchen asking them to keep the sides warm.
In addition to this, the service was basically absent. The first waiter told us they were out of olives for the drinks, whilst the next waiter brought us as much olive we wanted.
During the meal, we did not see any waiter, but afterwards, they probably understood and offered coffee on the house!
What a pity that a place like this year after year don't care about this beautiful place the restaurant is and ruin guests experience and the opportunity to make it a preferred place to eat. Look to the neighbor, Marbella Golf, where the restaurant is packed on Sundays by people not playing golf but eating

My wife and I decided to stay at Rio Real in Marbella.
We wanted a hotel with a good golf course and relatively close to Marbella in order to be able to pop into town in the evenings without a hire car.

Rio Real was much better than we expected.

On arrival our room was significantly larger than what we had seen on line. It was spotless and very well laid out.
That evening we decided to eat at the restaurant which produced a good quality meal at a reasonable price.
The restaurant was good throughout.
The breakfast buffet was copious and with a lot of choice and we found all the staff friendly and willing to help.
The golf course was also a great treat:
For serious golfers try playing from the back tees. The course becomes tight and difficult. Playing early is better as the greens in the morning are great but have a few too many spike marks in the afternoon.
The first 14 holes are a fantastic challenge (take the pleasure of launching a big drive of the 11th ) and the last four lack a little imagination but if you play well you will come back elated and go to the bar where again a friendly and efficient staff is there to serve refreshments and good food.
A special note to the starter who is a delightful character.

We also spent one afternoon by the pool.
The entire area is very good.

On the whole this was a wonderful experience from start to finish.

Our only criticism is the fact that the website does not do this hotel justice. It is considerably better than what you can see.

We like to try new places but this hotel is worth going back to. That in itself speaks volume

One last recommendation:
Drew Northcott at the front desk.
A very proficient multi lingual person who ensured that everything was right till the moment we departed.

I played this course as part of a group of eight and we all agreed that the course was in great condition. The greens were fast and true and were in excellent condition. There were some tough par 4's that if you aren't a big hitter will be a bit of a challenge to reach in 2. My favourite hole was the 11th which featured an elevated tee and was a short par 4. My only criticism would be that the halfway house was closed and the drinks cart was nowhere to be seen until the 15th. All of the staff were very welcoming and I would thoroughly recommend playing it. I certainly will be visiting again.

Our stay did not include golf.

First impression - the hotel lobby, clubhouse and pool were beautifully designed. The hotel room was dated (fake wood walls and ceiling, small tv) but clean, a good size and nice view.

The hotel was very quiet for this time of year.

You need a car to go anywhere so would advise renting. Although a taxi to town is not expensive, there is nothing nearby to walk to.

The staff are nice enough but service at the restaurant could be slow although it was quiet, we had to help ourselves to menus after a while. They didn’t have a drinks menu so could only keep saying no to my drink suggestions until we settled upon a fresh orange juice... which was from a carton when I questioned it, but this was removed from the bill without me requesting which was appreciated. Little things just weren’t as seamless as you might expect.

Limited vegetarian options on the menu but that seemed to be a theme throughout the whole area. Strangely they had added random amounts to our food bills without description and when questioned they said it was a room service charge (to the pool) despite there being no sign of an extra charge anywhere and varying amounts being added to dishes that cost the same. It was resolved with apologies but made us initially weary.

The only other thing is the hotel would probably benefit from a small gym.

We had a relaxing week but would look elsewhere if returning to Marbella.

Rio Real is up in the peaceful hills just 4 km from Marbella old town. Rio Real offers an excellent golf course, staff and service, rooms, food and situation. There is also a pool and sun deck with mountain views. We will be back!
