“Wedding week”
Reviewed 17 January 2014 via mobile

We celebrated our wedding at the hotel last September 2013 with aprox. 130 guests, most of them staying at the hotel for a few days and so did we.

First of all congratulate Cristina, the wedding coordinator, on the amazing job she did from the very beginning when we came to visit the hotel. We wanted everything to be "different" (from the timing, to the food, passing by the decoration as well) and she never had a problem with it. She always understood and assisted with everything we needed.

Both the restaurant and kitchen staff did a great job. The food was delicious and abundant. We had changed the menus to something more "Spanish" as we thought our guests coming from abroad would enjoy that. The kitchen didn't have a problem accommodating our wishes and the food was very well presented. The food was served in a timely manner even though we had some speeches in between and glasses were always full. Gema was specially attent to everything we needed and Rafa accommodated all guests requests with excellent service.
As during our wedding we were so busy and nervous we had not tried the wedding cake. The day after the chef brought us some, so that we could still enjoy it. Such a wonderful detail!!

A big thank you to the housekeeping department as the rooms were clean and welcoming. They also did something special for us by looking for the Christmas lighting which we used on the cocktail terrace (see pictures).

Thank you to the maintenance department for hanging all the different flags in the ballroom. It really looked very pretty!

We had requested to the reception department to deliver quite a few welcome bags for our guests, with explanations for the wedding, maps of the area which the hotel got for us and little gifts. Although it was busy, they delivered those upon arrival of the guests without any issues.

The only problem we have had with the hotel has been the reservations department. They have been very unprofessional and unfriendly, not only towards us but also towards our guests, even though some people were trying to book for a long period of time. They have not been accommodating, always made excuses by saying "the email had not arrived", were slow in responding and even though we brought them many room nights, they tried to double charge some of the rooms (even months after the wedding!). If you are booking your rooms at the hotel, you might as well book with a third party as they often have better rates. If you are booking a group, be ready for many problems and disappointments. The treatment we got from this department was reason enough to in more than one occasion rethink the location of the wedding. This is very sad as all the other departments did such a wonderful job!!

Because we had so many problems we often dealt with the subdirector, and he was a caring and helpful. Due to the great job he did, together of course with Cristina from the events department, we stayed and enjoyed a beautiful wedding and a week we will never forget.

Furthermore, the day before the wedding we organized a small tournament for our guests. The golf course is beautiful, varied and is very well taken care of. The views are also a joy!

For the ladies we had a champaign and pastries party in the afternoon by the beach at the "Bacardi lounge" which was tasteful and well served, where we enjoyed delicious food, excellent service and great views. A great way to relax before the wedding!

We invite you to take a look at our pictures of the hotel and the wedding as it is a stunning location!

We definitely recommend the hotel.

Dear Guest.

First of all, we would like to thank you for choosing Hotel Guadalmina Spa & Golf Resort in Marbella to celebrate such important day and for taking the time to share with us your experience. Our guest´s feedback helps us improve day by day.

It makes us very happy to learn that you, your husband and all of your guests enjoyed your wedding in our Hotel. That you had a good experience at our hotel is our greatest pleasure and it´s the reason why we work so hard every day.

Thank you for the acknowledgment of our staff. I will pass along your praise to them and especially to our events coordinator, Cristina.

Regarding your comments about our booking department we are glad to inform you that we have always offered the best rate available. In fact, you can see that in all sales channels of the hotel we offer the same price. Sometimes in some channels you can see a cheaper price but when you do finally make the reservation the price is equal or higher than the price offered by the hotel (booking department or website). This is because some channels have offers without VAT so the prices are attractive to customers.

However, we regret that you have taken that impression from our reservations department. The hotel always offers the best rate available for all customers.

Let me thank you again for choosing the Hotel Guadalmina Spa & Golf Resort to celebrate one of the most important days in your life.

It will be a pleasure to have you among us again in our hotel for your first anniversary and the years to come.

Yours faithfully,

Fernando Al-Farkh

Reviewed 2 January 2014

We are two friends on a golf vacation from Ireland that have stayed in the hotel for 10 nights, and are leaving tomorrow. The stay has been very much a mixed bag in terms of good and bad experiences, here is our story.

We had booked a superior room, and on arrival we were informed that we had been given a great room with seaview (which we had also specifically booked). We asked if it was a superior room and that was confirmed. For that reason we were very disappointed to find that we had gotten a very small twin bedroom, so small in fact that we would have struggled to fit in with two suitcases and two big golf bags.

Feeling down we plodded back up to the reception and complained. According to the hotel website a superior room is 40 sqm, so clearly we had not been given that. The man who gave us the room upgraded us to a junior suite free of charge after a short discussion with another person in the reception. Our way of interpreting the events is that "they" tried to pull a fast one on us, and when that failed they made up for it. But seriously bad form, how can you trust people after that. My friend, in whose name the booking was, did get an apology from the man in question the day after at the Christmas reception.

The room we ended up in was fine, the beds a bit small but comfy, and the rooms we had were spacious, quiet and the bathroom was a really good size and well stocked up. Cleaning staff was very efficient and friendly, and so as a hotel the basics work well.

The breakfast buffet was great, lots of choices, good food, and open from 7:30 to 11, so you could have a lie in and still make breakfast. The lunch menu is good with a mixed selection that should suit most tastes. We had lunch a few times and were always happy. The quality of the cooking was of a consistent high quality.

On Christmas eve we had the set dinner in the hotel, again, good quality. One evening we had dinner in the bar, where there was an ok menu with sandwiches and burgers, again good food. the problem in our eyes were that if you otherwise wanted to eat dinner in the hotel you had to join their different food theme nights, and the price for these was high by our measure, we saw 50 euro per person. If you are really hungry that is fine, but otherwise no, so the hotel lacks a decent evening restaurant where you can order a la carte.

The restaurant faced out towards the sea with a great view. The bar was boring, it did not have a cosy feel to it.

The hotel advertises itself as a golf resort, by our measure it is not. Yes, tee off at hole 11 (South course) is just outside the restaurant, but that is it. There is a small golf check-in office and if you start between 8:30 and 9:30 in the morning you were allowed to tee off from hole 11, otherwise you had to go to the golf club, which was an 8 euro taxi ride away. We had booked 7 rounds of golf, 3 on the south course, 4 on the north course. The North course is not very nice, so after one round on it we cancelled the other rounds and booked two more on the south course (the North course plays in between lots of buildings, lots of walking between holes, but the holes are short with some exceptions and are not very challenging). The girl in the hotel did that for us free of charge, which was nice of her.

At the second last round of golf we discovered, after we had hired a golf boogie at the golf club, that we could have hired this at the hotel, that would have been cheaper, we could have taken it all the way up to the golf club, played the round, and driven back down to the hotel! The golf pro informed us of that, and when we wondered out loud why the hotel hadn't told us, he smiled and told us that the hotel never informed people of this. And that is another issue we had on this trip, in terms of the golf, the hotel is singularly unhelpful, it is just not geared for it. There is a putting green, but no driving range, no proper practice area, and nothing in the hotel relates to golf except the hotel logo and the bar had a Golf Club sandwich, which is probably just a club sandwich :-).

The hotel has a great situation at the seaside with a nice pool area and the beach just next to it, I can imagine that it is great for the summer time, in December you tend to care less. There is one restaurant within easy walking distance, El Cortijo de Guadalmina, aka El Cortijo de Ramiro. For anything else you need to drive.

Recommendations: Go for a superior room if you can afford it
Go to the local restaurant, El Cortijo de Ramiro for dinner (closed Sunday)
If you are going for golf remember this is not a golf resort, you might be better of somewhere else
Recommend trip to Puerto Banus (10 euro in taxi) and Marbella old town (18 euro taxi).
We preferred the South course, both as a course and for convenience
Bring lots of money, this is not a cheap area

Room Tip: Choose superior room

Dear Guest,

First of all, thank you for the time spent writing your comments about your stay in this site. All constructive criticisms are very welcome.

Regarding your comments about your room, we would like to inform you that at your arrival you were allocated in a double superior frontal sea view as you booked. When you noticed at the Reception about this, you were informed that our Superior rooms are the ones with sea view as your room, and we offer another superior room available which it was a little bigger.

It is true that the Golf Club House is at the other side of the main road but from our Reception and Golf Department we inform to all our guests about the possibility to rent a buggy in our Proshop if they play at the hole number 1. We are very sorry in case you did not receive this information and we will take all measures in order to improve our service.

Finally, we would like to thank you for your kind comments about our breakfast area and cleaning staff, we really appreciate them.

We truly hope to be able to welcome you back to our hotel in the near future.
Yours sincerely,

Excellent location, views and golf courses, very good spa and spa team, good food and bedrooms.

Reception team processed us and nothing more, no smiles but better than golf master, bar and restaurant team who just didn't want you there, the bar man especially kept on changing tv channels so he could watch stuff even when other residents watching things and gave no service what so ever I will give them all except bar man benefit of doubt just hard to get going with so few guests.

One last negative room service tr,ay outside room for 3 days.

But finally I would give it a go if you want beech front location, spa and great golf, I'm sure team would be better if busy.

We have just returned from a 3 day break playing golf on both north and south courses and bed and breakfast at the hotel. Firstly the golf was first class both courses are very good but the South is a real challenge but top notch. We thought the hotel was excellent our room was luxurious and staff very attentive with the breakfast room over looking the med fantastic. I would strongly recommend this hotel for both golf and holiday Superb thank you

After reading some negative comments about this hotel, I feel I must interject!
I have stayed at this beautiful hotel twice in the last two years and plan to go back every year. The staff, the food, the rooms, the pool, the beach and the hotels location are all perfect for a chilled and relaxed week away. We couldn't have asked for more. The property most certainly does not need a complete overhaul!
I am fussy, I have worked in the travel industry for nearly 12 years and have travelled all over the world, but this hotel is simply fantastic, hence my repeat trips.
Myself and my 3 girlfriends stayed the first week in June 2012 and the same week in 2013 and we cannot recommend it enough. Its peaceful and very luxurious.
Well done to all at the Guadalmina, keep doing what youre doing! Cant wait to come back again next year :)

Room Tip: All rooms have lovely views but the best we had was facing the golf course

I have stayed at this hotel many times in the last 10 years, both with groups which I organised and many trips with my partner, I know this hotel inside out. Ok the good bits first
Great location on the beach
Quiet and peaceful
Pool and beach area excellent

Now for the bad bits
Nothing has changed here in 10 years, all the furniture in the rooms and the outside decking,
The bar area has been renovated
The staff are sullen and never smile with 1 or 2 exceptions
The reception staff are a disgrace everything is a problem to them
Breakfast variety is extremely poor and never changes
We were on an all inclusive package for over 55s they had a specific menu for lunch and a buffet at night time which had teamed nights like Itialian nights etc, the lunch menu was a disgrace you could not eat the food it was cold and bland
The buffet dinner menu can only be described a "dog food".when I complained to be fair they allowed us to order from the a la carte menu, only problem here this never changed, and I would say this was the menu for the whole year
Wine list was very poor no decent wines on list and when I asked for information about no one seemed to know or care
Rooms are very outdated and housekeeping standards both in staff and linen, towels etc need to be changed
In summary this hotel needs a major makeover, first money needs to spent urgently on the accomadtion
It needs all staff need to be trained in what customer service is all about you are treated as an interference in their daily schedule.Management need to be much more visible to the PAYING guests, and in particular senior management must take the blame for the overall very poor standards in customer service and quality of food
And finally the reception staff have absolutely no greeting manner whatsoever, when I arrived I was giving no information about the hotel amenities , the over 55 package details, basically I was handed my room key and asked to pay for my accomadtion and meal package there and then
Lucky I have stayed in many different types of rooms in this hotel so I knew my way around
Also I noticed the suites on the ground floor were unoccupied and we're not available to book on the website,I would be a nice touch to have an "free upgrade" policy to returning guests. But alas I am sure this is not on any agenda with this hotel. This criticism is giving constructively and I hope it is taken that way,if you just do 1 thing in the future teach your staff to greet and smile at your customers

Room Tip: Check your room before you check in

Dear Customer .
First of all I want to thank you for spend time to sharing your experience and personal opinions about Guadalmina Hotel .
I also want to thank you for so many years you have stayed at our hotel, especially after all the negative that you think it has.
I'm sorry you did not have perception of the many things we have improved during the past three years, as new mattresses in all rooms, new flat TV’s , especially all bed linen and towels are fully renovated ago less than a year , and all this without the constant maintenance work, for example in year to all the rooms have been repainted three times, the exteriors of the buildings on two occasions , the bar and restaurant renovation , how you said, and construction of a new pool bar, Balinese beds on the beach, and customer parking closed and guarded and etc. I'm not going to reflect here in full, but investments in improvements exceed 1 million euro in the last two years.
Another thing is the style of furniture you call outdated. These, I 'm sorry to say , are part of the spirit , personality and decorative style of the hotel and frankly I do not imagine this hotel with modern melanin furniture , so sorry to tell you this is not going to change in the near future.
In connection with the friendly staff, really appreciate your comments. Indeed we are working to improve and just last week we have made a dedicated training to improve customer empathy and attention. I apologize if at any time we have failed to attend to you how you expected.
For breakfast and other services , we continually try to offer the best to our customers and in our case we chose a variety every day , instead of the formula smaller variety that changes daily. In this regard I would like to remind that our breakfast each day has more than 100 different products, among which are more than 10 varieties of bread , 8 varieties of pastries, 6 prepared natural fruits , 10 types of yogurt, 6 kinds of juice, 6 of ham, 3 fresh cheese, diferent types of eggs, bacon sausage, 6 cereals and many more ... even cava . With this wide range everyone can certainly drawn up daily a different breakfast to their liking.
Finally thank you very much again for all your comments as useful as constructive, which we will have it in consideration to help us to improving every day.
I hope have the opportunity to see you again in our hotel soon and to assist you personally.
