This hotel is located just a short 15 mins stroll down the promenade to Puerto Banus, with a few nice beach bars to stop off at on the way. It was a little tricky to find by car, so Sat Nav is advised. Outside there was plenty of space to park, but bear in mind it is off season in October.

The rooms are very large with two double beds, and we had a nice balcony overlooking the pool area, the bathroom was also very large and the hotel itself was spotlessly clean throughout.

All the staff we spoke to were very polite and helpful from the cleaners to the receptionists. The only negative aspect of the stay was the fact the Wi-Fi was charged at 12 Euros a day, given that lower class hotels such as Etap and Ibis offer this service for free, it seems a little greedy that other chains can charge such large amounts to provide it.

However overall the hotel makes a superb base for either a weekend away or a longer holiday.

Stayed 5 nights in Melia Marbela Puerto Banus (formally know as 'Dynamar')
This is a classic Spanish Costa resort hotel, nice big rooms, ok service and facilities.
I think there are hundreds of hotels like this to be found at the Spanish coast, so why choose this one ?

The location ?
Not directly at the beach, but very close. Through the backdoor (locked from 24h - 08h), it is just 300m to the beach and 400m to the first beach bar with beach chairs, etc.. The harbor (Saint-Tropez like) is 1km away, a short and nice stroll along the beach.

The rooms ?
As said: nice big rooms, with flat screen TV (65 channels), little balcony, mini-bar, enough closet space. Bathroom with shower/bath and bidet, in bathroom toilet.
Look out, if you don't specify you want one bed, you end up with two queen size beds which can't be pushed against each other.
The rooms with sea view are more expensive and in my opinion, not worth the extra money. The hotel is not located at the beach anyway.

The food ?
Stayed BB, so can only judge breakfast. Food quality is good, lots of choices hot and cold, fruits and veggies, meats and cheeses, a la minute eggs.. no complaints there
The breakfast room (and I assume also the dinner room) is large. As it has a high ceiling and is completely floored with stone tiles it can be very noisy. No much decoration so you feel more back in high school rather than on holiday :-)

The service ?
it is ok, depending on who you are talking to.. the ladies are friendly and helpful. The men (who are a bit older) have found their pace and will not go faster nor be pro-active..
Do mind that check out is at 12h but your keycards will not work after 11h..
Look out! This hotel was chosen by the Melia group as one of their sales-pitches.. Who doesn't remember the time-sharing sales talks from the eighties and nineties :-) so be prepared when spoken to after breakfast whether you are interested in a free night in Madrid, an hour of massage or a free green fee at La Quinta.. It will cost you 2h30 of your time to listen to, I must say, a fine presentation where one will ask you to already book your holidays for the next 44 years in any Melia Hotel all over the World.
I did it because I wanted the green fee and it was worth the time spent.. :-)

note to golfers:
Los Naranjos -> very crowded, lots of unexperienced players (no HCP limit) so long waiting times (took us 5h30 to complete 18 holes) but very nice and playable course
La Quinta -> holds 3 nine holes courses, which gives nice combinations. not crowded at all and honestly one of the nicest courses I've ever seen.

Stayed here with two other girlfriends in May for a weekend. The hotel is immaculate, the rooms are comfortable and large, and overall, we had a nice stay. I booked this room because Melia's website allowed for a "triple" room. However, what this really meant was two double beds and a cot (otherwise, would have given it 5 stars, but let's call a spade a spade, here). Fortunately the room was large enough to accommodate the cot, and I being the one who "drew the short straw", can honestly say the cot was quite comfortable. Pool was quite nice, though it was too chilly to swim when we were there. Good short walk to beach and the marina area. Would like to say that I wasn't in love with Puerto Banus. Would rather have stayed in Marbella proper. Puerto Banus was entirely too full of British stag and hen parties, and, as a 40-year-old American woman, this was not really ideal (though it certainly elicited quite a few laughs). Should have done better research!

I stayed here with a friend in July 2011 and family in October 2011. Hotel is beautiful, as are the grounds. Location v good-15 mins walk to the port. Rooms v good, clean and smart, though family rooms are no different to other rooms and are on ground floor meaning kids could run out into pool. £30 per night extra for connecting door between rooms..

Main issue as others found, is that the staff are v aloof, unfriendly and unobliging. Far worse in oct than in July for some reason. No sign yet of guy handing out towels and cushions for wooden sun loungers. Pool bar closed. Weather was bad so maybe this is why. Told off by waiter for asking for another pot of coffee at breakfast when there was still some (a dribble) in the first one.
Would think twice about going another time.

I chose this hotel as we were very happy with our last stay at the Gran Melia in Mallorca and went with the reputation of the chain so as not to be let down. Even though I have a loyalty card - got it far cheaper online through Travel republic.

The rooms are good, clean spacious with seating and a balcony. Small fridge, safe, TV etc.
Main critisim of the room is the inconsiderate comings and goings of other guests at all hours and the obvious lack of noise insulation for the door, which had gaps around it!

Otherwise the staff were very polite so they must be taking notice of comments on here, and the buffet breakfast and evening meal was very good. What is especially useful is the fact that you can opt to have your 'meal' either at lunch or diner, so you have the option of planning your day. Only had lunch once, and it’s the same as the buffet which if we had gone for all 3 meals would have become boring after a few days despite the large choice. A German couple I spoke to had been there 2 weeks and were quite happy. As a base to go and explore the surrounding area I can understand that, but the same buffet 3 times a day!

There are loads of bars on the beaches, in the port area and in Marbella - and not too expensive either. Went to the local supermarket and bought packs of 6 bottles of water at 1 euro each and a few snacks as the mini bar is a bit of a joke with its prices, and I wasn’t going to pay silly prices for the internet either when its available on my phone for less.

Avoid being roped in to the timeshare sales pitch unless you love the place and are happy to go back, or interested in what they have to offer. Nice though the 'level' apartments are, you have to pay maintenance and an arrangement fee for something that you would struggle to resell because it depreciates over half the time of a normal timeshare.

The market is an absolute must as it takes a good couple of hours to walk around and at the top you can sit and relax with a coffee and a view. The beach is good and managed to have a swim in the sea which is not bad for October.

This would be good for kids as has good pools, and 3 tennis courts.

Room Tip: Outside rooms have partial views of the sea, and are less likly to be disturbed by the evening entertainment.
