“Very pretentious people appart from Hannah. Not in same league as La Villa Marbella”
Reviewed 30 September 2009

Stayed at La Villa Marbella earlier this year. Unfortuneately fully booked up. Have booked La Villa for next year. La Villa half the price of Hotel Claude but 10 times the star quality coupled with the warmth and sincerity of the owner.

I am surprised about your comment.
You certainly didn´t think we were pretentious people when you enjoyed the free drinks in the patio and we actually had nice brief conversations. It is true though that Hanna is an exeptionally nice lady and I´m glad you liked her.
I cannot take your review too serious as you are going on about another hotel nearby and it makes me wonder if you just want to damage our business with your remarks. You knew or rates and the other hotel´s rates and it surprises me now that you decided to stay with us...
We can´t all be in "the same league" and i actually take it as a positive comment. Thank you

We found the staff both charming and helpful ,in particular Nia with her help with my Spanish. Great expense has been lavished on this casa with much care and thought ,and it is the best small hotel that we've stayed in. Only one criticism, the toilet door. Very embarassing being able to see through the glass door when in the loo. At £250 a night ,without breakfast, it's very expensive.
Would I go again? Probably not . Not because of Hotel Claude but because Marbella is none to attractive a place. Juan

Hotel Claude was just the tonic we needed. Chic, but cosy, elegant but comfortable and simple but delicious food. We had two rooms (Flammant- a light. airy room "up in the eaves" of the hotel and Savannah- warmly decorated with a nice high ceiling.) The hotel is situated in one of the quaint cobbled streets of the old town less than 5 minutes walk away from Orange Square. Desiree and her staff were wonderful hosts without being intrusive. We appreciated the complimentary soft drinks, tea, coffee and biscuits. We look forward to our next stay here and highly recommend Hotel Claude. The hotel does offer complimentary spa/fitness facilities, they are however on the beach promenade. Great restaurants near by are Casanis - French Bistro (on the same street), Zozoi - International( a 7 minute walk away).

We were blown away from the moment we finally found Hotel Claude. It is out of the way on a cobblestone pedestrian street in the old town of Marbella but well worth being lost and having to get directions from local police station! It was lovely and peaceful and we were pampered! The food was EXCELLENT as was their attention to detail. Desiree' was very kind, interesting and acommodating. The rooftop terrace overlooking an old tile roofed cathedral was awesome. We would go back in a second!

Having read the screenplay-like reviews of (a? ) certain previous writer(s?), we decided to share our very mixed impressions of this hotel.

On the night of our arrival, we were picked up by the hotel manager herself at a street corner outside of the charming labyrinth of the old town. The hotel lobby is stylish enough, fragrant with scented candles and we were indeed greeted with a glass of red wine. But our room - the Oriental - next to the roof terrace resembled a contemporary ski-cabin. It had ceiling-windows and the lack of privacy, due to the thin and transparent door to the toilet, was troublesome...

Efforts were made by staff to make us believe that the hotel was crowded (think mysterious stories, set-but-empty tables) but we were the only visible guests daytime during the greater part of our week long stay. Therefore, we received the full attention of the staff, which meant that our every move was monitored. For instance, since the espresso machine was impossible to operate, we brought our own caffe latte from outside. This faux-pas was apparently inconsistent with the "Hotel Claude Best Practice", thus sanctioned with glances and comments. Breakfast on the roof terrace was great.

All in all the hotel is stylish, clean and the food is tasty so if you can manage some weirdness, Hotel Claude is not a bad choice in Marbella.

Thank you for your comment.
Sorry you did not like the room. We always offer the possibility to change rooms if one is not entirely satisfied with the choice that we have made.
You should just have asked for another room as it was off-season it would not have been a problem to change you over. When we are fully booked it can´t be done but it is always worth asking.
With regards to the "impossible" espresso machine, you should have just asked one of our staff. They are there to help guests 24 hours and they know how to operate it.
We never mind if people bring food or drinks in from outside, especially because here you get courtesy Espressos free of charge and we certainly have no problem if someone brings in anything from outside. We only charge a corkage fee for wine or champagne but this was not the case. We encourage our guests to have drinks or snacks from our menu but if we do not have anything that they might like we are happy for them to bring in or even order in.
It is certainly not a faux-pas and we certainly never glanced or commented and we do not "monitor" anybody as we have work to do and this is a hotel and not a school or some such place.
I really doubt that you were made believe that "the place was crowded" as we only have seven rooms and it never gets crowded unless we host a cocktail party for 50 people. You were here in January when it can be extremely quiet and if we only had 2 rooms on the days you were here it is easy not to bump into the other guests as everyone has their own rhythm of getting up and as we have breakfast until well after noon it is normal that when one gets up at a certain hour (early or late) one does not coincide with other guests.
If one is used to big hotels with many rooms, then yes, this can be a bit of a different experience as we do not have that many people wandering about as you could find in the bigger hotels.
I am sorry you felt some "weirdness" but rest assured that we are easy going and do not mind anybody´s business and certainly don´t mind people bringining in coffee in from outside.
I was actually not aware that one can get "take away coffees" here in the old town.
Thank you for having stayed with us and I am pleased you liked our breakfast.

We are certainly open for suggestions to improve.

We have just come back from a 5 day holiday to Marbella and I have to admit that this was the best ever hotel experience!

Hotel Claude is the most fabulous place we have stayed for a long time! A small luxury boutique hotel! Full of charm ! Perfect for a relaxing and romantic escape!

The service was impeccable (5 star deluxe)! Best DVD collection I have come across! Marbella when it rains is actually not a nice place! But you actually do not want to leave the room!!

A real jewel
We shall be back pronto

We have just got back from truly wonderful week in this beautiful gem of a hotel. Hidden away in one of the cobbled streets in the old town of Marbella, we could not fault it. This small hotel has just seven rooms, each one different. We stayed in the Marroqui room which shares a small balcony with another room. The room was beautifully decorated. Every morning we had lunch on the small but lovely roof terrace, enjoying the sunshine, and on our last night ate at the hotel's restaurant.

The service was impeccable and very friendly and they could not do enough to help us and make us feel welcome.

The hotel's situation in the old town was fantastic, with an array of great little restaurants and bars - we did not have a bad meal while we were there. The 15 minute stroll down to the beach is a delight as you wind your way past all the cafes and shops.

This hotel is great for a romantic getaway, whether for a long weekend or a week or so. We will definitely be going back.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Revamped Royal Townhouse Once the summer residence of Empress Eugenia de Montijo (Napoleon III´s wife), Hotel Claude Marbella is a 17th- century townhouse that has been revamped and restyled to meld authentic period features with modern design, setting a new benchmark in the boutique-is- beautiful league of southern Spanish hotels. This latest chic retreat takes its name from the late Claude Devoize, the French Opera singer, whose home this townhouse was back in the 70s and 80s, hosting endless soirees and cultural gatherings. The focus of Hotel Claude is its marble-flagged patio and its unique romantic roof terrace, overlooking the bustling old town of Marbella. The seven rooms, divided into 6 Superior Deluxe Rooms and 1 Suite, have been designed individually and each boasting their own unique personality and feel, though all come equipped with the latest in comfort and technology. The Suite Francesca is the only room that looks out onto the old town’s main street. A large balcony and a huge floor-to-ceiling window keep it bright and airy, and the high, wood-beamed ceilings and decorative arch leading to the minimalist mosaic-fitted bathroom create a sense of spaciousness. All 6 Superior Deluxe Rooms are located to the back of the building, overlooking neighbouring patios and roofs. Up in the eaves, The Flamand room overlooks the roof terrace and has its own private stairwell leading up to a smart loft-style studio with glossy oak floors and a semi-open-plan bathroom. Listening to the church chime outside and looking out over the steeple, you feel like a princess in a tower. Savannah and North African-themed Marroqui are joined by a courtyard, making them ideal for families or friends travelling together. Small properties can sometimes feel stifling, but not here, and the design incorporates a flurry of velvet, purples, reds and cream colours. Once the a la carte breakfast has been served on the roof terrace or the black and white themed “bijou” style dining room, guests are left to their own devices. Focusing on showing guests a slice of the old Marbella, in addition to the Costa del Sol´s beaches and golf courses, Hotel Claude emphasises on slowing down and enjoying the surroundings. You´d be hard-pressed to find a retreat as slick or private as The Claude anywhere in Marbella. ... more   less
