“Excellent holiday & hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 October 2009

Have just returned from a week's holiday at Sol Don Pablo with my young daughter and we had a wonderful time. Hotel was immaculate and the staff were very helpful and cheerful. Food was of good quality and there was something for every taste. Great entertainment staff and a varied entertainment programme with a different show every night. Literally yards from the beach and plenty of restaurants and bars nearby.
Hotel clientele was mostly older people and couples and as it was outwith the main English school holidays there were not many kids around but still plenty to keep them interested.
I would certainly go back to this or the sister hotels of Don Pedro or Don Marco all within the same complex.

The Don Pablo has a great location near the old town with its cobbled streets and stalls . The promenade is directly in front of the hotel. Its a large hotel We where there in September it was mostly middle aged or elderly. The food was only average. Plenty of choice for breakfast. The evening meal could have been better with more choice. If you like the sun choose a room at the bowling green side as the sun is on that side in the evening. There are no tea or coffee facilities in any of the rooms so take a small travel kettle if you like a beverage when you wake .The dinning room opens at 7am for breakfast- 630pm to 10pm for evening meal.I would advise finding a local for a drink as the hotel is quite expensive. The hotel is clean and the maids change the beds with clean towels everyday.

Booked this hotel two weeks before travelling, based upon generally good reviews on here, it was a close choice between this hotel and the Belplaya.

The Don Pablo is in a complex with two other Sol hotels, the slightly more expensive Don Marco and the slightly cheaper Don Pedro, the Don Pablo seemed to offer the best value for money. All hotels share the same facilities, so you have a choice of 9 pools with no shortage of sun loungers, you can go to any of the entertainment events in the hotels. The hotels surround a nice garden too.

Our room was fairly spacious, the flat screen had BBC1 and Sky news, the air conditioning worked well and there was a fridge where you just had to buy a couple of bottles of beer at the start of the holiday for them to turn the fridge on for your entire stay. There was free wifi too, you just had to ask reception for the password. Our room was on the first floor overlooking the entertainment stage and terrace, the shows were 10-11 each night, so you could sit on your balcony watching the show drinking your own (cheap) drinks. We had one small problem with the room, the marble surround fell off the wash basin for no real reason, perhaps the steam from the shower melted the glue!

The buffet breakfast was generally good and offered fruit juice, cereals, fruit, salad, cold cooked meats, hot buffet of bacon (usual Spanish bacon, strips with more fat than meat), sausages (not like British ones), baked beans, tomatoes, black pudding (different to ours), eggs where nice (scrambled, fried, and omelettes to order), potato cakes, fried bread. Plenty of bread, you toast it yourself. There was also cava to make a bucks fizz. The tea was not quite to our British taste, we ended up buying some English tea from M&S in Gibraltar! Breakfast got a bit busy and chaotic around 10am, best to go before then.

The buffet dinner was generally excellent, so long as you did not go too late. Soup and salads for starters, a varied Italian buffet offering spring rolls, pizza and pasta, as well as the main buffet offering varied fish (nice anchovies), chicken, meats (veal, beef, pork), plenty of veg, potatoes and chips. Also a paella each night. Plenty of cakes, jelly, ice cream, cheese and biscuits too. Again there were busy times to avoid when you had to queue to get in.

Reception staff were friendly and offered tourist advice too, however don’t book tours from the hotel as the local travel agents where about 10% cheaper. We also noticed that the hotel was used for local wedding receptions and business functions, this is always a good sign. There were a mix of Spanish, German and British tourists there.
The location was ideal, just a minutes walk from the beach, with lots of beach fish restaurants, shops and bars nearby, but quiet, no rowdy revellers! A very short walk turning left to the local bus stop, tourist info and travel agents where you can book tours. About 10 mins walk turning right, to the bottom of the steps which lead to the Calle San Miguel and the main area or Torremolinos, past lots of nice little shops.

Booked hotel through Thomson’s and flight from Newcastle separately from Jet2.com, as an aside, very pleased with jet2.com, especially if you do on-line check-in and print your own boarding pass, you only have a very short queue to hand in your hold baggage rather then the long queue whist people get their boarding passes.

Dear PBCNuneaton,
Thanks for sending in your review.
We have taken note of your comments and I am glad to say that we are already acting on some of your suggestions. The central lifts are to be modernised this winter, and this should result in an improvement in speed. Another project for this winter is the renovation of a number of rooms and bathrooms. We are planning to include adapted bathrooms for wheelchair access in these plans. Currently all the adapted rooms in the Complex are in the Sol Don Marco.
I am looking into your comments about the restaurant. In general we have positive responses regarding our dining room so we must make sure that we return to that situation. Regarding the dress code, it is true that we specify long trousers at dinner. However in the summer months we have a predominance guests (generally not English)who are looking for a more casual atmosphere and we allow guests to wear smart shorts. Sports clothes are not allowed and at the end of September we tend to get more rigorous in the implementation of the dress code.
Thanks again for your comments.

Just arrived back from this hotel. Not overly impressed.
Reception area is nice and roomy, if a little dark. Reception staff were helpful and did their best to find us a room as a replacement for the one we were allocated.
We ended up on the sunny side of the hotel, overlooking the bowling greens and facing the sea, at no extra cost.. I would suggest you do not stay in rooms overlooking the street behind, extremely noisy. We had asked for a disabled room as i have to use a wheelchair, unfortunately, none were available.
One of the biggest problems is the lifts. A twenty minute wait in the morning and evening is not un-heard of. Using the stairs wasn't an option due to my wheel-chair.
The food? Well... breakfast was poor, fatty bacon, no proper sausages, under-cooked eggs, [if you let the extremely miserable chef serve them to you]. Not great.
Evening meal was better, sometimes excellent, other times, poor. Very hit and miss.
There is a ruling that men wear long trousers in the restaurant in the evenings. This was not adhered to, remember this is supposed to be a four star hotel!
Whilst this hotel does have some good points, unfortunately the negatives out-weigh these. Some of the staff are excellent, some frankly shouldn't be working in the hotel industry.
Recommended for the location only, as all the sea-front is paved and flat, ideal for anyone with a wheelchair.

Booked this hotel last minute after reading the reviews and I must say that this is one of the best hotels we have stayed in. We arrived on Sunday night at about eleven o'clock and was given a room on the third floor only to find that the air con was not working! Down we went back to reception and complained, the lady receptionist said she would ask for it to be looked at. Thinking that as it was Sunday night nothing would get done for a couple days but no, we were most suprised when we returned back to the room a couple of hours later and found that the air con control had been dismantled, (although still not working). Next morning after breakfast was delighted to find that all was working ok.. great.. never known anything done this quick in a Spanish hotel before.
The holiday just got better, I cannot think of any negative points to give this hotel except that maybe the entertainment is more geared to the children and not to the adults, we eventually found ourselves going over the to Don Pedro where there was a different singer on each night.
The complex consists of three hotels the Don Pablo, Don Pedro and Don Marco and you can use the facilities of all three .
The pool area was well kept with a life guard on duty which was nice to see, there are plenty of sun beds so no need to go out at crack of dawn to put the towels out! There were still emply beds at 12 o'clock midday although the brollies always went quite quick. There is special shaded areas erected where you can relax (on sun beds) if the sun is too hot..
The food was very good with a good variety although the breakfast was always the same each day with only a change of sausage now and then. The staff were mostly friendly and helpful but we did find that the bar service was very slow.

The hotel is in a great location for access to beach, shops, restaurants and quite bars. Hotel staff were all very friendly, rooms clean and quite large. The old mini bar is still in the room for your personal use for drinks an the usual bottled water you can buy from the shops just out the front of the hotel - a nice touch I thought. There is also a safe in the room for which you have to pay at reception (cost me 25 Euros of which only 5 Euros refund on return of key - although i accept they must cover for replacement keys surely they could have refunded say 20 Euros ??). Overall I recommend this hotel for all ages and groups, as the activities provided cater for all and serve to keep the young kids tired out. The pools were clean and never crowded, although the early bird sunbed towel brigade seem to use up the majority of sunbeds by the time you have eaten your breakfast. One other note, internet was available but charged 1 Euro for 15 mins.
