If you staying over the weekend dont't take Royal Service because you do not receive any extra perks. Generally the staff are not friendly. The best thing about this hotel is location everything else is very average.

Stayed in a Royal Service room for three nights, amenities are not on a par with the 'Level Room' we stayed at twice in Alicante. Disinterested receptionist, open bar very minimal and closed at 20:00 when the reception closed, breakfast was orange juice (in cartons),coffee and pasteries but no plates or cutlery.
We had booked and pre-paid for a taxi from and to the airport; arrival was fine but when the taxi wasn't there for the return, the reception staff denied it was anything to do with Melia Hotels. Actually a taxi had come but was two hours early; still trying to get the fare returned.
Very little information available on the services the hotel offered, the web site states "1 Spa /Thalasso treatment" per stay but nothing offered; also forget to provide cards for the swimming pool towels.

Me and my girlfriend stayed at the Melia from 26 June - 3 July and the trip was brilliant. First impressions of the hotel were that it was in a superb location right in the middle of the tourist shops, supermarkets, cocktail bars and restaurants, the hotel looked nice from the outside with the two massive blocks overlooking the beach. Reception was very nice, and our room was lovely with a flat screen TV, adequate storage space, a nice double bed, and a balcony with pool and sea view on the 5th floor. I felt the hotel was in the middle of everything as there was everything you need on the left AND the right hand side of the hotel.
The pool area was nice, there were always sunbeds available after breakfast which goes from about half 7 - 11am, the pool wasn't as small as people have said but I think it would get busy in peak season. The beach is very nice and only 10 steps from the hotel, plenty of sunbeds over there, plenty of beach side restaurants and plenty of watersports happening over there.
The restaurant inside the hotel was very nice and modern, and the food was gorgeous, if anything it was actually quite posh. Everything you could ask for food wise, was catered for throughout the 7 day stay, and the live cooking station chefs were very good.
A great bonus was the fact that there was free wifi in the hotel. Obviously this won't appeal to all the people staying here but it was a great addition for me as I can not live without the internet.
The area around the hotel is very good if you like a bit of liveliness but also pretty relaxing at the same time. San Miguel which is the main town with plenty of things to do with shops, supermarkets, restaurants, pubs and cafes is just behind the hotel but you do have to go up the hill, up the steps or catch the lift which is located right by the hotel to get there.
The only negative I would have about the hotel is that it costs 60euros to keep the room open until 6pm, and lunch/dinner is not included (you will have to pay 20euros each to have a buffet lunch/dinner on that night)
All in all, this hotel was superb for me (20) and my girlfriend (19). Losing 110 euros on the 4th night didn't even put a dampener on it.

This was a very large hotel but it never seemed that large. the rooms were very spacious with a fridge/bar, balcony, views of the water. Breakfast was amazing! Made to order omelets
fresh fruit, pastries, yogurt and too manny things to recall. There was a small pool but again, not crowded because we were right across the road from the beach! It was an easy 10-15 minute walk up a small hill to the town OR there was a lift to take you up. In the evenings the places along the water came alive with fishermen, in line skaters, walkers, runners etc. The restaurants along the beach area were terrific and the seafood was out of this world and super fresh. People were friendly and those in the hotel always helpful. It was a great place to unwind after a week of touring!

Room Tip: The rooms are great with ocean views and balconies

My wife and I stayed here for two nights as part of a group tour. We had no control over the selection of this hotel. It was part of the package.

The hotel is large and located directly across from the beach. The rooms were basic as most were on our tour of Spain, but it was clean. Dinner buffet for one of the two nights was included with our tour package and it was delicious with a huge variety of foods. The breakfast selection was good but items were not re-stocked too quickly when a particular item was taken. The pool area is fairly small, and all the lounges were snatched up early in the day. The beach is directly across the street from the hotel. Easy walking distance.

The funniest thing we saw was a notice in the elevator for the "Free Buffett" only 20 Euros......I took a picture and sent it to Jay Leno.

We spent 8 nights in Melia (May-June 2011). Location is second to none and a view from the balcony is incredeble.
No real noise, good weather.
Pool is small, but beach is good.
yes, you have to climb the stairs to go to the shops, but it is OK.
The best travel agency is along these stairs, better prices compare with CostAfrica tours.
Parking is really limited.

Will be back again.

Room Tip: all the rooms are good, ask for a pool view

Just returned from 8 days stay in this Hotel. While the hotel is lovely, rooms excellent and breakfast very nice what really lets this hotel down is the size of the pool and the area around it. Even at 9am there was not a bed or chair that didn't have a towel on them even though there is a sign saying not to reserve beds. Hotel/staff did nothing about this and as a result we spent everyday at the beach. It would have been nice just for one day to spend it at the pool.
There was also a lack of information in the rooms about the hotel facilities.
We had breakfast each morning which could be a bit of a nightmare with coach parties all arriving at once and skipping the queue. Some people have no manners at all.
In saying all that we would probably return for another stay.
2 restaurants we would recommend would be are the Europa restaurant and the French Bistro. As you come out of the Hotel turn left, walk for about 5 mins and turn left both restaurants are on that street. And also Lowrys bar for a couple of drinks after dinner.
