“Will probably not be back”
Reviewed 11 July 2011

Although our 2 couple party had requested high floor rooms we were both given ground floor rooms.2 metres from our balconies was a 5 metre high hedge which ran the full length of the ground floor rooms and it totally restricted and darkened the rooms. Also, our balcony was infested with ants from plants growing outside. On top of that the fridge did not work.
We complained immediately but we were told that as the hotel was fully booked it would be about 2 days before we could be moved. Instead of a 10 day holiday it ended up as 8 days as we were actually moved after 2 lost days.
We will not be going back as we could not take the chance that the same could happen again.

Room Tip: We asked but were not given. We would not recommend a ground floor room.

We arrived at the hotel, were quickly booked in as a family of seven over 3 rooms. After a glass of Cava/orange juice we found our rooms. We were next to each other in terraced double rooms, very clean and tidy and they were cleaned daily, always plenty of fresh towels. Would have preferred first or second floor but hard to get us all together. Staff were very friendly, arranged a table for 7 each day, food was excellent, plenty of choice. Again the staff were very good with the children. Salt water swimming pool. We always managed to get 7 sunbeds together, no towels on beds from early morn allowed, sprinklers and a man with a hose will put a stop to that, excellent idea. Unfortunately the only ones to get caught out were English (soaked towels). A few steps down and you are on the promenade and a beautiful beach, good for surfing. A relaxing walk along and you reach the Marina. Lots to see and do there.
Excellent holiday and made special by being with the family and having friendly staff throughout the hotel.
It is a 4 star hotel but I would say a really good 3 Star.

Arrived at lunch time and was given the usual Riu welcome glass of bubbly. Our check in was with the only male member of the reception team who was rather surly. Other members of reception staff were most helpful. No offer was made to have our cases taken to our room and we were just pointed in the right direction,

Our room was in the original older block and was large with a good sized bathroom with two wash basins and a limited side sea view. However, as the manager pointed out at the welcome meeting, it is Riu policy if you are unhappy with your room, they will endeavour to change it for something else, when it becomes available and always give priority to existing guests.

The standard of room cleaning was first class with the small hand flannels made into swan shapes with sweets left each day.

The room safe was key operated which meant we had to carry the key at all times and would be better if locked by a combination lock.

Dinner was two sittings one at 6.30pm and the second at 8.15pm with allocated tables which could however be changed during the stay if desired. We asked for the first sitting and an outdoor table on the terrace overlooking the pool and sea which we were given with no problem. However, at breakfast you can sit anywhere and we always made for the outdoor seating. The quality of the buffet was excellent with plenty of choice although not as much as at the Riu hotel in Nerja where we stayed last year, perhaps this is an indication of cost cutting.

The pool area was great with sunbeds almost always available throughout the day although we noted some German guests took a parasol for each sunbed rather than one for two!

There was only the promenade separating the hotel from the beach and Benalmadena marina was only a short walk from the hotel. We walked along the promenade to Torremolinos which took us about 40 minutes. The promenade has bars and restaurants at intervals along its length. The beach is wide and clean with lifeguard stations.

The hotel entertainment is poor but we did not expect too much. We were disappointed to note that daytime activities have been discontinued such as rifle shooting, darts, table tennis, competitions and boules which we had enjoyed at our last year's Riu holiday and provided a good social interaction between guests of different nationallies, again a sign of cost cutting.

This hotel only really caters for small children and most guests are over 50. There are only activities for older children during the school holiday season.

We took a bus to Mijas a lovely mountain village about 40 minute and only 1.40 euro each way. We also booked coach tours to Ronda and to Cordoba which are both to be recommended.

A great local find was the Paloma Park in Benalmadena, a 30 minute walk away, where chickens, ducks, rabbits, cats, peacocks all roam freely in lovely surroundings, with a lake, waterfalls and a great cactus garden. We are grateful to the Thomson rep, Gary, for telling us about this oasis - and it's free!

To sum up a great holiday with lots to do and great for strolling to the marina and along the promenade and stopping for a drink and for people watching.

We may well return to this hotel in the future.

Room Tip: just ask at recepyion when booking in the higher floor rooms nearer the beach in the new block have...

Food was excellent with plenty of choice, different carvery everynight. pool area was very clean and there was plenty of beds with fresh towels every day (20 euro deposit). also hotel situated next to the beach. we will certainly go back.

Room Tip: ask the reception desk staff for 3rd floor room

We travelled as a couple and a single person. The room for the couple was ok but the single was very dissapointing.Due to the supplement of £150 for the single room I found the room very dark and dismal and the light had to be switched on during the day.
The dining room was too small for the size of the hotel, therefore the buffet area was very congested and limited in variety of food.

We stayed at the Nautilus for 11 nights and chose it based on earlier reviews -what we experienced was:
Rooms- you need like us to get a room overlooking the swimming pool and sea our room was large and spacious but with an old TV with only two programmes in English
Staff-mostly very friendly and helpful
Restaurant-we think that an extra block was added to this hotel at some stage but the dining room is in the original block and is too small for the number of people staying thats why they have to have two sittings so make sure you take the second sitting otherwise they come round and tell you that "you have to finish now!" -the food is good but very repetitive same fish every day and not much choice of meat
Lounge and Bar- no happy hour and poor entertainment resulting in most people going to local pubs so the bar has no atmosphere
Swimming pool-although there are signs to forbid the reserving of sun beds we witnessed dozens of towels being laid out as earley as 6.30am!- the pool is of a good size although in need of some maintenance around the inner edge
Location-good for the marina and sea front but a long walk to the nearest bus stop -the hotel does not run a courtesy bus
Overall-pleasant but no more than average- the management will congratulate you on staying at what thay believe is the best hotel in the area but they are not willing to act on any suggestions you may offer
We would not go back as there are better hotels to be had

Just back from a weeks hol here, was tempted to this hotel by its good reviews.
Every area of this hotel is kept spotless, very impressive and staff that are happy to help.
Mainly older clients as their is really nothing for children here to occupy them.
Check in fast and efficent and nice glass of fresh orange to greet us.
Bedrooms spacious with tv and mini bar. Bedding changed once during our weeks stay.
Bathroom large with toiletries and towels changed daily.
Pool area very pretty although usual reserving of sunbeds going on. Massage available at extra cost aroung pool and was very popular, prices ranging from 15euros upwards.
Pool towels available for hire at a cost of 10euros refundable deposit.
A two sitting arrangement does operate for evening meals and we choose the later sitting but it was no problem to change to the earlier time if you request to do so.
Food was delicious and something to suit every taste. Staff were excellent at catering for gluten free needs with warm crusty bread each meal time and cakes plus chef would cook what ever we requested for my son and so he enjoyed pasta, piza dishes etc.
Hotel is in a good position for walking to shops, bars and resturants.
Entertainment each night ranging from a band to flemenco etc.
Internet available for 2 euros for half an hour.
Overall a great relaxing holiday in a clean hotel with very good staff.
Look out for Paco the assistant manager, he does a superb job walking around the hotel checking everything to make sure its up to scratch and that the visitors are happy, well done to him for his help in maintaing its 4 star status.
