we have just returned from a two week stay at this hotel.we consider this to be one of thebest hotels of its type in spain.the staff are very friendly and attentive.the food is very good and the hotel is spotlessly clean.the entertainment is good and the entertainments host, mike, is fantastic in every way.the hotel guests comprised of belgians, germans, dutch and british.no problem at all we met some very good people and in particular john and lynne and rose and john.the hotel is located directly on the seafront and about 1mile from the town centre.their is a frequent bus service to the centre which costs only 1.22 euros.we would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: order a room in the main hotel not the annexe

Location. The Hotel RIU Costa Lago, is situated behind the RIU Belplaya Hotel, so is not on the promanade , so only some rooms have a limited seaview. (Most guests staying aged over 60) The main town centre of Torremolinos is a good 40min walk, or accross the road from the hotel, is the bus stop (L2), which runs into town every 20 mins. If you turn left from the main entrance, 150yrds brings you to a supermarket, a couple of bars and a Chemist. Also a taxi rank. You are also on the Promanade and beach.Turn right here for the town centre. Take a right turn out of the Hotel and a 15min walk takes you to the district La Colina. Here is the Railway Stn, for trains into Malaga or Benalmadena. Again a 20min service in either direction. Ticket machine at Stn, with Instructions in English.
Hotel facilities. We booked All Inclusive, with First Choice, and stayed between the 12th-19th November 2013. The reason for taking this holiday was the price paid, which resulted in a good value for money break. We were allocated a room at the end of the block (197) which overlooked the Bel Playa bowling green, (More about that later) The room was therefore not overlooked, and was in good decorative order, with a balcony that had sun from mid morning until late afternoon. However the TV was circa 1990's (with 1 english channel ITV1), and no fridge to keep water or other drinks cool. Two good sized and firm beds, bedding changed once during week, and towels changed as and when you required. A safe is also available. Key is 10euros, refundable deposit.
Restaurant. open for breakfast 7.30-10am. A good selection of food, however NO sausages all week (only little cocktail stye things cooked in onions). Scambled eggs always had another ingridient (mushrooms/ham) never a plain scambled egg dish, and No omeletes ? You had to get your own pot of coffee/tea. Never served to table (As in other RIU Hotels). There was also a late breakfast served on the terrace from 10.30am, not worth having.
Lunch. served between 1-3pm. Self service drinks available, and a always a good selection of hot food. Salad was available, however never any cold meats/tuna etc, to go with the salads?.Afternoon tea was served from 4pm, a few cakes and bread and cold meats.
Dinner. Served in 2 sittings. (winter 6pm or 7.45pm). You were allocated your table on your first night, and that was yours for the rest of your stay. However tables very close together, so you shared with your neighbours (ours being 2 very nice French ladies). Again the food to a good standard, with the adition of a Carvey each evening.
Bars. Pool Bar was open for the first 3 days of our stay, and then closed, never to re-open. It was situated at the end of the building, and had self serve drinks (Beer/wine, soft drinks and hot drinks). Spirits and cocktails available from the barstaff. The main bar situated in the main hotel area, also acted as the entertainment area, no where else to go for a quiet drink, so became very busy at night, and was the only place to get a drink during the day.(but you could take it onto the terrace or down to the pool (after that 1 closed).
Swimming Pool, very small, with an even smaller childrens pool, and not heated. Pool towels are provided free from Reception. Lots of sunlougers. (Hotel not full).
Children. As stated a small pool, a little miniclub, and a slide, nothing more. (Only about 4 children at the hotel during our stay)
As mentioned earlier, The bowling green. Open to hotel guests 10am-1.30pm, and costs 4euros to hire a set of woods per person. Local clubs use the green in the afternoon.
So overall we enjoyed our weeks holiday, for the price we paid. However this is NOT a 4* Hotel. But a GOOD 3* choice, if you want a nice relaxing all inclusive break. Weather during our stay was sunny, with average day temp 18c to 20c in the shade, however dropped to 9c at night. Rained overnight a couple of times.

We stayed in this hotel as a family holiday (7 Adults and 2 Children) and none of us could really fault it. Slight issues including sunbed allocation and staffing, but all in all a good holiday had by all, some of the party have returned since.

Room Tip: Get up and get a sunbed before the blue bands do (russians or germans)

My husband and I have just returned from this hotel .We had stayed at the maconfort Beach Club hotel just next to this but could not get in at this date .We were certainly not disappointed the food was very good and lovely and hot .entertainment could have been better but it is of season apart from the evening that the four tops tribute band were on they were great.Would definately return to this hotel.Only one thing spoiled our stay was the people who smoked on their balcony as it came into our room and our balcony

I am always a bit wary of returning to a place that had been so good the first time. I needn't have been. If anything it was better this time. We stayed from the 5th to 15th November and booked through First Choice. The staff as always are very friendly and helpful (The Directors are interested in their guests too and go out of their way to make you welcome). The rooms are well kept and cleaned everyday. The bath gels and soaps were replenished when used. It was nice to be met with a lovely glass of Cava on arrival and check in is so quick and easy. It was good to see many of the hotel staff from last year. The quality of the food is excellent and is always hot. There is plenty of choice (including a carvery every evening), a good salad bar and loads of fruit. I had trouble making my mind up which dessert to have. They have a selection of cheese and crackers at lunch and evening meals. At breakfast you could have practically anything and it was never boring. Full English is always available (although the bacon was sometimes a bit fatty). Then there is the continental with croissants, cakes, yoghurts and fruits as well as cereals. This hotel must have the best toasters I have ever encountered in a restaurant as they toast the bread first time around!!
The bar is well stocked and we were always able to get whatever drink we wanted including cocktails. Hot drinks, soft drinks, wine and beer are also available from the bars or the self service area in the conservatory/pool bar area during the day. One thing that the hotel does not provide is a kettle in the room. So if you want a cup of tea when the bar is closed you will need to take a kettle with you. Bottled water is provided at the bar as part of the all inclusive.
Another big plus for me is the safety deposit box. For a 10 Euros deposit you are given the key for the safe in your room. and unlike most European hotels you get the deposit back when you leave. Pool towels are also free of charge. The pool area is very clean and has a bar in good weather.
The evening entertainment could be better and is repeated every week. The singer was not too bad and on the second Tuesday he was a lot better and got the audience participating more (or maybe I had had a bit more to drink that day). I am not into Flamenco dancing or guitar plalying (unless it is Hank Marvin) so found this boring and went into the conservatory to play cards instead. The magician, well he was something else and I would not want to see his act again as I found part of it very distasteful.
We did not do any tour operator trips as we have been before. The station is only a ten minute walk away at La Colina and for under 4 Euros return each you can travel into Malaga (well worth a visit) or to Benalmadena (visit Parque de La Palmoa, its free!) and Fuengirola. The machines are really easy to use and have an English option. The trains operate every 20 minutes in each direction. A visit to Mijas is a must. We took the train to Fuengirola and then the bus (1.55 Euro each way). Parque la Bateria is also worth a visit and is easily accessed by train (by far the easiest way to find this) getting off the Fuengirola train at Montemar Alto station and walking over the road bridge.
The holiday was made even better by the unusually hot weather for the time of year.
We will definitely be returning again to The Costa Lago. Thank you to Raphael and all the staff for making our holiday a really good one.

Room Tip: The rooms on the far side of the hotel get more sunshine.

A nice hotel, really clean and up to Riu standards. Staff very welcoming and pleasant whatever their role. Breakfast was for us the best meal of the day with fresh bread, cakes, fresh omelettes, nice fresh fruit but the juices weren't fresh, no Cava on offer (nice to have the choice at breakfast!) and the cured meats were not good quality. Lunch and dinner we found to be very similar and there were two timed sittings which we are not used to on holiday as we don't like to be too regimented as we have enough of that at home. The wine was poor and to buy a bottle, which we did do, was not supplemented.
The quality of the alcohol was good in the bars, with Cruz campo beer and the spirits were unknown brands. Cava and Irish coffees were excellent.
The hotel is on the outskirts of Torremolinos but makes for a nice walk along the promenade in the mornings and evenings and for a short break is ideal as is only 15 mins transfer in a taxi 25 euros from the airport and 18 from the taxi stop right outside of the hotel.

we had visited this hotel twice before and enjoyed both occasions but this time on our first evening,we entered the dinning room at 8.35 to be meet by the restaurant manager who actually roared at us because we should have been in at 8.00 for table allocation. There were no shortage of tables so we sat at one on the aisle and began our meal,as we eating our main course the manager passed our table and again in a high voice told us to hurry up as trays were been emptied at that stage we had enough of this mans arrogance so we left.I wanted to go to the hotel manager,my wife persuaded me to leave it but even now I,m sorry I did not report the whole episode.
