ClubHotel Riu Costa del Sol
Ranked #11 of 71 Hotels in Torremolinos

Had a great after Christmas break 19th January. The weather was kind, lovely and fine but a very cool breeze. There are a lot of hardy souls at this hotel the sun beds were occupied most days!
We love this hotel for its location, cleanliness, food and staff. We have stayed in lots of Riu hotels, mostly resorts in the Caribbean which are a lot bigger. These resorts have numerous restaurants ,animation teams and are usually isolated. The RIU Bel Playa is just a sea front hotel don't expect club hotel facilities and from what I have seen its certainly got nothing for children. We use it as our base, we have a great breakfast then we are out and about most days until about 4pm, although we are AI we don,t rush back for lunch. We always opt for 7.45 dinner and have a couple of cocktails in the bar prior to this. Yes the lounge does get crowded as most people want to see whatever entertainment is on, some nights are better than others.
This is our fourth visit in 4 years (same week) and we will be back again next year, as will lots of other people we see every year. Riu must be doing something right to be able to get all this repeat business .

We stayed here for 1 week over new year good hotel great food the only downside is that the entertainment room is not big enough when the hotel is full. They have 2 sittings for tea so you have the same table every night which is good. Plenty of choice at mealtimes. The hotel room was nice and clean as were the public areas. Bus stops right outside the hotel to go into Torremolinos but it is also a nice walk down the seafront in nice weather.

Just got home from a two week break with our friends this was our first visit to this hotel but our friends 3rd time, the hotel is very nice and the staff are very friendly & helpful nothing is too much trouble to them, the rooms are very spacious and clean also the Safes are free which is a first as many hotels rip you of with those. The food was very good and anyone who couldn't find something to eat must be very fussy and picky. Now the downside for a 4Star hotel I have never known anyone to pay for your Wifi connection but you had to here and I might add that the Download Speed was terrible you were very lucky if you got over 1mb Download Speed also the entertainment lounge was very Warm & Small and when you went to the bar for a drink people were standing in the doorway watching the show and you couldn't get through this should not be allowed once you got through you had to fight to get to the bar because people were standing at it talking and drinking what chance has anyone got these people should have been told no standing at the bar after you have been served.

Have just spent a three weeks winter break here. I have to say the the rooms are of a lovely size, but the bath was in a terrible state, it had obviously been re-coated and it was all flaking off, so when you stood in it to have a shower, it all stuck to the bottoms of your feet!
The other down side was the entertainment room is FAR too small for the number of guests, so if you didn't get in there early, no chance of getting a seat for any entertainment, you had to sit out in reception area, or bring a table and chairs in from outside and put in that area.
The food was Ok, the salad area was very good, but the main courses tended to lack imagination. I have had far better food at other RIU hotels.
But on the plus side we did enjoy our holiday, the management seemed very friendly, quite close to a railway station for ease of getting around, and right by the promenade.

Not a good start when we arrived when booking in. To be fair booking in time was 3.00pm and we arrived with our Thomson crew about 12.00. Most peoples rooms were ready but we were asked to come back in an hour. So we had a couple of gin and tonics and went back an hour later. Again the room wasn't ready and asked to return in another hour. It was a little inconvenient but went for lunch before returning. Hooray our room was now ready so we got there and was greeted with an overwhelming stench of tobacco smoke. My wife has asthma but even if she didn't we shouldn't be expected to find this acceptable. So another trip to reception to explain but to no avail; there were no other rooms available. They said that they would "sort out" the smell. It was blatantly obvious that they were going to do nothing so my wife went to the manager to complain. He was a very pleasant man and within minutes got us a new room which actually smelt of fresh air much to the annoyance of the reception staff!
So we settled in and got on with our holiday. All the rest of the staff were very friendly and helpful and were very hardworking generally.
The hotel and the rooms were kept very clean although we did both succumb at different times to a 24 hour tummy bug that we had read about on previous reviews.
The food was pretty standard all inclusive fare but perhaps a bit samey and uninspiring. We never starved at any point in the holiday but got a bit fed up of the same offerings by the end.
The entertainment left a little to be desired for us although most people seemed to quite enjoy it. My wife and I are in our 50s whereas the vast majority were 70+ and the entertainment was obviously targeting their end of the spectrum. It did seem like an elderly rest home a lot of the time but we made the most of it.
Torremolinos is a nice resort and we would not hesitate coming back to the area but definitely not to this hotel which is right on the outskirts of the resort about two miles along the promenade from the centre. Public transport is good and reasonably cheap but we liked to walk to most places in the generally pleasant winter sunshine; the climate here for January is lovely.

My wife and I have just returned from a 7 night break at the Costa Lago, We had asked for a high floor but on our arrival we were given a ground floor room, we were asked to stay in that room for the night and it would be sorted the next morning, The young lady at the reception
'Alicia' was excellent and had us in a higher floor room in 20 mins, I would like to say she is the most professional receptionist I have met at a resort style hotel, Thank you .
This set the standard for the rest of the stay and we were not disappointed, all of the staff we encountered were excellent as was the food and the hotel in general, we would certainly book again, Thanks again for a great week.
