“Great hotel, will return”
Reviewed 16 September 2012

Just returned from a 4 day break and definitely recommend this complex. There are a couple of negatives but you get those anywhere.

There is a large reception with free wi-fi in that area but you must pay if you want wi-fi in the room.

First negative, check in was very slow and took about 25 mins from arrival to get to the room. It's a pain at the time but you soon forget about it.

We booked a sea view superior room and although it was nice to wake up overlooking the sea it wasn't worth the extra money due to the fact that from midday the sun was off the balcony, which was my 2nd disappointment with the balcony being very, very small. You could barely get 2 chairs and the small table in the balcony area especially if you both wish to be out there.

There are plenty of areas to sunbathe in and we always found spare loungers. We took sun towels but no need. You can get a large hotel towel for a 10 euro refundable deposit.

Each of the 3 hotels had its own pool and you could use any of them. All areas were spotless, the gardens were well maintained and there was daily and evening entertainment if that took your fancy.

Happy hours at the 3 bars were popular. One bar operated between 5 and 6, another was between 5.30 and 6.30 and a 3rd was from 8 - 8.30. It said on the notices that cocktails weren't included in the Bogof deal but that wasn't true, we had a mojita or 2 each night.

Location was great, just a 5 minute walk to the paths that took you to the main town at the top and near enough to walk along the front to Benalmadena.

We booked half board because of the relatively small difference in cost between that and B and B. Plenty to choose from breakfast and evening meals but I would avoid the kebabs, they looked superb but we had one each and the pork and chicken weren't fully cooked. Everything else was ok and what can be expected of cooking for the 200 or so people eating at the same time.

I'm a member of the hotel rewards scheme and on departure they asked me to check out at 12 even though rewards members have until 2pm. They gave me a different room until 3pm because my original room was required. That room, 4019, had a larger balcony and overlooked the hotel pool and i would try to get that next time if possible.

We had a 5 hour wait for our flight from checking out at 3pm and they offered me a courtesy room for half an hour later in the day to shower and change.

Just back from a week here with my Wife, both aged a young 50.

We didnt bother with paying for transfers after reading other reviews, jumped in a taxi, 20 euros and there in ten mins.

Firstly we arrived here at 9.30pm and without hesitation the receptionist got us to put our bags in the luggage store and gave us a piece of paper to go straight into the restaurant before it closed.
Following our unexpected dinner, which was lovely food , even though it was about to close, we continued to check in.
Athough we had booked the Pedro our room was just inside the Marco, they merge so well you dont even realise you have gone from one to another.
The room was perfect, yes they are not massive, but it was perfect for a holiday, beds, wardrobes , dressing table, plenty of storeage and hanging space, massive walk in shower, lcd tv with half a dozen english channels, small balcony with 2 chairs and a table overlooking the from, so not affected by music etc from any bar.
LET ME NOW CLEAR UP A FEW CONFUSIONS WE HAD READING OTHER REVIEWS:

Safe in the room, 2 euros a night, 5 euro deposit on return of the key, which I think is normal for any part of Europe I have been, we read a review complaining you paid for a safe, well I have never not paid.

We did NOT pay for aircon, it was free with your own controls, as we had 2 room cards we were able to leave one in the room slot and leave the aircon on so the room was cool when we returned.

Soap/shower gel dispenser on the wall in the bathroom and in the shower.

NO kettle or tea/coffee facilities in the room.

Hair dryer in the bathroom, not the most powerful but did the job.

We were not leaving for the airport until 6pm, normal check out is 12 noon, but we paid an extra 25 euro,s to keep the room, this is not guaranteed, dut to how busy etc it is, you can only confirm this the morning of checkout. You always have the offer of the luggage store and use a shower room for free.

You can hire beach towels, which we did and I would say over 50% of others did too.
This was 10 euros a towel, which was a deposit and you got the full amount returned when you handed the towels back, so all in all free beach towels,.
However if you ever did want a fresh towel, it was only 1 euro to get a fresh one.

You are meant to use the Restaurant associated with your hotel, the Pedro and Marco share one , the Pablo has its own, however there is no problem if you want to use the other, but they are identical in menu,s, which is varied, great quality and always freshly made, Both have an Italian corner serving Lasagne,Various Pasta,s and pizza etc.
We found the choice of food at breakfast and dinner great, from cooked breakfast to cold meats , cheese, cereal, yoghurts etc for breakfast.
Dinner was always a choice of soups, various fish, meat and salad mains, along with cold meats, cheese, lots of different bread, followed by huge choice of deserts inc fruit , cakes, etc etc.

One thing to point out at Dinner, they do have signs everywhere saying they expect men to wear long trousers and no vest tops in the restaurant, which 90 % of people followed, if you wore smart shorts that wasnt a problem, it was more sports shorts and vest tops they didnt like, which I personally agree with, but you always have an ignorant exception.

The hotel complex is great, plenty of pools to choose from, a couple of great kids pools, a couple of pools for the accomplished swimmer, a couple of pools for the floaters and not so confident swimmer, where you can always touch the bottom. A couple of Jacuzzi,s thrown in.
Always sun beds available where ever you chose to spend your time, with only a small number of early morning towel reserveing sunbed hoggers.
A couple of pools had nice pool bars.
Plenty of lounge areas inside and out for having drinks etc day or night, with entertainment provided for both adults and children.

The complex was very clean, all staff were very efficient, although not the smiliest friendly people.

Would I recommend it , hell yes.
You are 2 min walk to the beach and promenade with its choice of bars, shops and restaurants, 10 - 15 mins walk to the town , where its adviseable to walk along to the Sol Melia, get the lift up the hill for 50cent each, do you shopping and then slowly stroll down hill, at the end of Calle San Miguel down all the steps with shops all the way down, makes life a lot easier.

In our opinion after walking quite a bit, it seemed the only hotel and complex we would entertain in the area, due to its location, cleanliness and facilities.
Ideal for all except groups of youngsters, not enough for them to do, but I think they have already got that idea, we found the place full of couples, mainly our age and up, with a few young families.

This is our honest review to help you enjoy and choose, hope you enjoy the place as much as we did.

We had a very comfortable 13 night stay, we booked and paid the extra for a sea view, and even had a lounger on the balcony, i got into the habit of lying there relaxing as the sun went down.
We lived in the Marco but enjoyed the Larger pool where the water was warmer and the length of the pool was good for a swim, and they also provided great water fun for all ages.
We enjoyed having coffee at the poolside bar at the peublo, and appreciated the staffs understanding of the English language (we are Scottish).
The marco was very relaxing, the lift was efficient, and any requests we had were met within minutes.
I will be returning when i need a comfortable break away in the sun.
If the classroom assistant is reading this, and your Doctor husband it is 5002, we enjoyed speaking to you both.

Oh! and one other thing, if you have a favourite photograph, take it on holiday to this hotel and have Ingrid paint it with her pastels, we are very happy with the portrait.

Sorry about the title but there was a birds of prey show as part of the entertainment one night and I couldn’t resist the pun.

I spent four nights at the Don Marco with my wife to round off a trip to Southern Spain. The Don Marco is the most recent addition to the three Don hotels in this complex and guests here have access to facilities in each of the hotels. However the plan given on arrival is confusing – it shows the Don Marco as the Don Pedro and vice versa.

The hotel is just a few metres from the sea front where there is a good range of shops and bars. The town centre is also very near and is accessible via a lift or a fairly steep walk. However you get there it’s worth the effort.

Our room was well up to standard for a four star hotel and had a balcony large enough for a table and a couple of chairs overlooking one of the pools. The air-conditioning worked well and the room was clean.

We had a half board deal with everything buffet service. We had the possibility of eating in different restaurants in the complex but we were happy to have all our meals in the Don Marco. We were informed on arrival that there may be queues at breakfast time but we never experienced any problems although the restaurant was fairly busy. The quality and range of food available for both breakfast and dinner were good and the restaurant staff were courteous and efficient. It was possible to swap an evening meal for lunch.

There was a choice of pools of different sizes and there was never any difficulty finding loungers or shade. The evening cabaret was standard holiday fare but there was enough variety to entertain most people and I am now the proud owner of a Sol baseball hat for my moment of glory in the music quiz.

The only negative aspect was that the reception was busy at times and only manned by one person which sometimes meant a longish wait. However, the various receptionists were always extremely helpful and polite as were staff throughout the hotel.

We enjoyed our stay here and if you are looking for a comfortable and convenient hotel with a variety of amenities then this could well be the place for you.

Returned this morning from the Marco, which shares the complex with sister hotels Pablo & Pedro. Each seems to have it's own personality, the Don Pablo being the biggest & most modern.
The Marco was very pleasant to stay at, the staff were very helpful, with everyone giving a "Hola" at all times. Very clean complex, ideally situated on the sea front. We were allocated room 3036 which offered 2 views of the sea together with view of one of six (I think) pools. Two restaurants cater for the guests with the one in the Marco being smaller with more of a Spanish feel to it than the larger more modern restaurant in the Pablo, which seemed to offer a greater choice of food.
No complaints about the food at all ( we were half board), lots of choice which offers something for everyone. We found that late dinner suited us (main restaurant closes at 22:00), but still offers all the options of dishes at this time with a lot less people than earlier in the evening. We sat in on last nights entertainment in an open/outside area on the first floor of the Don Pablo which was a Flamenco show which was quite good (even enjoyed by DSH our travelling critic) who wouldn't admit his enjoyment, but couldn't hide the fact with feet tapping & hands clapping !! Our third visit to the area in the last 12 months, we usually stay at the Melia CDS just a bit further down the road, both hotels have their own style & whilst I personally prefer the Melia, the Don complex has a certain "something" to offer allcomers, give it a try it won't break the bank and as can be seen by earlier reviews has a large following of regular fans. Would I return ? Yes, quite possibly for a few days as the surrounding area is pleasant for evening walks with lots of choices for a beverage or two. The area is only a 15 minute taxi ride from Malaga Airport & also easy by train from the airport ( if only taking hand luggage). I'm unsure of the age of the Don Marco, I couldn't tell if it is an old hotel trying to look new or vice versa. The rooms are good with the bathroom being more modern. The hotel is pretty quiet apart from door banging (mainly late afternoon/early evening), however this is mainly due to some fellow guests, but surely the hotel could install a quietning device. Stayed at the Melia Berlin recently and the room doors there were uber quite, so can be done.
