Walking along the Darro is a great way to get a feel for the city. I would recommend doing it early on in your visit to get an idea of the flavor of Granada.

Taking a walk along the Darro river is a must-do in Granada. The street is charming and romantic with quaint little shops and restaurants.

We stayed in a hotel on this street, so walked it often, mainly towards town centre but also to its end in the other direction, from where you can climb a very steep lane to the Alhambra. It's better to descend this way than go up
On a sunny day it makes for a pleasant stroll. Everything is photogenic. The old buildings press tightly onto the street and are rich in history, there's a pretty brook (the Darro) on the other side and the Alhambra towers above. Plus, there is no shortage of stops for coffee or tapas. You can also visit the old Arab Baths (free).
The street is also very narrow, and buses and taxis ply it frequently. So you often find yourself pressing against the old buildings to let them pass. Luckily, traffic only comes from one direction.

Our hotel was situated just off one of the small side streets near to the Carrera del Darro so we walked it everyday, most of the time en route to somewhere else, the town centre or to one of the historical sites. It is a busy street full of life, especially in the evenings. However, the only thing I found frustrating was the taxis and mini buses as they pushed their way up this street that was never made for cars. You had to hug the side of the road if you saw a taxi coming.
