“Don't miss this!”
Reviewed 29 April 2014

I was not prepared to be so impressed by this monestary. Fantastic paintings. The subject of most of them was rather gruesome with depictions of munks dying in various horrible ways. The English are NOT nice people in these paintings :-)
And then you enter the church of the monestary: MAGIC! The decoration are amazing. Don't miss the ceiling. To bad you are not allowed to take photos.

“Amazing, breath taking”

Don't miss it out - it isn't allowed to take pictures; it is most probably one of the most spectacular historical buildings in Spain!

“A Very Beautiful Monastery”
Reviewed 4 April 2014

The Cartuja Monastery is a very beautiful monastery. The cloister is big and there are many interesting paintings about the monks who were martyred in England. There are many large paintings done by Sanchez Cotan and Vicente Carducho about the lives of the Carthusian monks. Some show the martyrdom of these monks in England during the reign of Henry VIII.

The church itself has two main parts, the almost all white sacristy with elaborate plaster decoration, and the presbytery. There is a room behind the presbytery called the Sancta Sanctorum, with the most impressive tabernacle done in marble, jasper, and porphyry. This room is breathtakingly beautiful, with good paintings and sculptures, and the figures of many angels.

My advice is to go early, at 10 am, and be among the first to see it during the day.
