“not worth the money”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 February 2010

Reading the reviews i asked myself if i was not wrong on the place, specially the spanish people who only seem to care about the price- this being a good place- you must be joking.

Ok it`s central, clean, but:

-The single room i had was the smallest i have seen in my life;
-The interior rooms are labirintical, windows face alleys of concrete, no privacy, if there is action in the next room you are part of it;
-The exterior rooms are so noisy you can forget;
-Getting there by car is a nightmare and parking costs 13 € on a super narrow spot on a -3 level across the street;
-The place looks like a trendy bar with rooms in the backyard-By the hour.
-One lift for 6 floors and all the rooms.
-In a emergency setting this place is a trap.`

Hotel Universal was perfect for our stay in Granada. Very well located in the city center, close enough to walk to the Alhambra and the Albaicin, with great access to lots of restaurants and shops. The neighborhood is not overrun with tourists, and we were often the only tourists at the tapas places we visited. Hotel was recently renovated, has free internet access, and the staff was very cordial and helpful.

We booked a double room at this hotel which is centrally located in a delightful part of downtown Granada. The city shuttle bus from Granada airport has a stop just around the corner and the hotel itself is surrounded by shops and eating places up and down the block. The lobby is slick and modern with a nice sitting area in the rear, but we found our room (no. 211) to be nothing more than basic and on the drab side. The curtains were old and dusty, with no view except the neighboring windows of other rooms. The bedspreads were threadbare and the lighting was inadequate. The bed was comfortable, however. The pictures make the rooms look slick and modern but in actuality, the furniture is old and spartan.

There were actually 2 rooms for this double; one had ample walking room while the other section near the front door was quite crowded; with both sections connected by a step down stair. Although the bath was modern and clean, if you're tall and have to use the toilet, be prepared to squeeze yourself in there.

The front desk was very helpful and friendly. They have a reasonably-priced cafeteria upstairs but breakfast service is terribly slow. Try their chicken salad sandwich for dinner. It was quite good.

Overall, we were very happy with the location as we were close to the bus stops and the bargain stalls and churro cafes were all within walking distance. If all you do is sleep in the room, then I guess for 90 euros a day, you may not have reason to complain. A little upgrading of linens would go a long way in improving the appearance and comfort of the room.
