Hospes Palacio de los Patos should be much more than it is. The property itself is relatively well located and very nicely designed. It has an older building through which you enter and check in and a new building with most of the guest rooms. The two buildings are connected by a pleasant courtyard where you can eat or drink outside.
The problem with the property is really one of cleanliness, maintenance and upkeep. We booked four rooms in the new building. Three of the rooms were just fine, but decidedly less clean than you would want any hotel room to be when you enter. The fourth room had a very bad odor which we traced to a corner behind the refrigerator. It smelled like something had died back there, perhaps literally.
We moved out of that room into the only remaining room available for the time we were there, which was in the older building. That room simply needed updating. The counters were stained, there was nowhere to sit, the bathroom floor flooded any time you used the shower, the room was loud with traffic noise until 2am, the air conditioning was weak in a town known for its heat. The staff was very friendly and sympathetic, but didn't (and perhaps couldn't) do anything to actually make our stay better. It just wasn't a great experience.
The hotel is located a bit away from the town's main attractions, but they are still within walking distance. The hotel gets great reviews from many other travellers, but our experience just wasn't in keeping with what others describe,
