“charming little hotel, perfect location”
Reviewed 30 May 2013

Stayed here for 2 nights. The first night on the 2nd floor without the hot tub, all rooms overlooked the hotel lobby below. Careful about the windows when in the bathroom!

the 2nd one on the 3rd floor with a partial view of the roof and the Alhambra, a uniquely designed bathroom which was a few steps below the bedroom, with the hot tub. Loved the rooms- quaint designs and furnishings-you felt you were living in a real traditional house. Both rooms were unique in their decor. Not for someone expecting sterile cookie cutter modern rooms. There's a cafe downstairs but we didn't manage to try it.

what we loved
the friendly staff- especially Alberto who was a great help
the 2 minute walk from plaza nueva-which made it easy to locate on foot and by taxi, easy to hop onto a cab also; minutes uphill to Albaicyn, the first partial view of the Alhambra at the top of the hill (for a better view, you'll have to walk uphill to Albacyn). The venue made it perfect for us to siesta after lunch and then hop out again easily for the rest of the day
rustic and quaint furnishings inspired by its history
lift to every floor
free wifi which was reasonable in speed and coverage (could be sporadic on the 3rd floor)

regrets-
no kettle in the 2nd floor room, but we got on in the 3rd floor room
sporadic wifi on the 3rd floor in the middle of the room
jacuzzi function of the hot tub wasn't working
walls are thin- you can hear your neighbour's tv program, and what's going on at the reception if you're on the 2nd floor. But not a big problem- the hotel's generally quite quiet

I couldn't have hoped for a more perfect place to stay in Granada. Hotel Zaguan was full of character and its in the perfect location for exploring the parts of Granada that I wanted to see - just by Plaza Nueva and in between the hills of the Alhambra and the Albayzin. I felt very happy and at home and the staff were so friendly and helpful.

The Zaguan del Darro is housed in the upper floors of a 16th century mansion on the route along the river Darro, just below the Alhambra hill, a mostly pedestrianised street with the lively Plaza Nueva at one end, and the almost equally lively Paseo de los Tristes at the other.
The rooms, some quite idiosyncratic, are traditionally furnished and situated round an interior 'patio' or courtyard. If you are lucky you might get an Alhambra view. No restaurant in the hotel but an there's excellent bar/cafe at street level for breakfast, tapas, or meals.
We loved it, but don't go if you like standardised modern rooms or expect to park your car on site. And, sadly, it's not very suitable for anyone with restricted mobility. Apart from the steps up to reception, a couple of rooms also have steep internal staircases (if this would be a problem, mention it when booking)

Room Tip: 202 is up in the eaves, romantically beamed with an interior spiral staircase. 410 is split level, t...

This traditional small hotel in a 16th century building on the Rio Darro in the historic Albaicin quarter of Granada lives up to its reputation for intimacy, location and hospitality.

It is located right in the middle of the most interesting and bustling part of the city, below the famed Alhambra. The hotel is small and gracious, staff are welcoming and helpful, and most speak English. The rooms, which all have names (we stayed in 'Emperador Carlos') are old fashioned but charming, with bar fridge and free wifi on request.

I recommend the following restaurants and sites nearby: Bar Minotaur next door, the hamam (Turkish bath) museum just down the road (it's hard to spot as the front door faces side on to the street and has only a small sign), La Taberna de Tiacheta opposite just across the stream, for a cool drink on a warm day (try the local horchata non alcoholic herbal drink), and El Tragaluz restaurant down on the flat right below Alhambra. There is restricted vehicle access to the area, but a taxi can take you to the front door.

If you regularly stay at Hiltons, this hotel is not for you, but if you appreciate a small quirky hotel in the middle of the action, stay here.

On a delightful narrow street opposite the small walled river. Up the street is a Paseo de Los Tristes with an outdoor café and views of the Alhambra on the hill. Good spot for night shots. Down the street is Plaza Nueva a transportation hub with restaurants and the location of the official Alhambra gift shop where you can pick up Alhambra tickets that you ordered on line so you don’t have to wait in line for them at the site.

Reception had constant staff, all with relatively good English which we discovered is rare in Spain – brush up on your language skills before going!. They helped with bus routes and taxi info (we got ripped coming from the train station, so hold your ground).

There is an elevator to your room, once you get up the first short flight of stairs from the street. We had a desk/chair and upholstered chair, closet and WiFi, a small window that opened to a little quiet alley walkway. Hot water and tub. They’ll make reservations for the Arab Bath which is close, but we didn’t have time.

They also securely held our luggage in a room behind the desk on our last day. We “borrowed” a paperback from their lending library, so if you go, please leave them a book in our name to replace it. Another traveler might be starved for an English version of a Tom Clancy novel!

Immediately downstairs is a bar the Minotaur with bacon and eggs, toast and jam, (if just ask for pan/bread that’s what you get, see the menu to ask for toast. Fresh squeezed orange juice – reasonable pricing. Although the menu says scrambled eggs, my one egg arrived sunny side up. Be sure you indicate dos (two) eggs scrambled ( use hand movement for mixing).

We stayed here for almost two weeks, and sampled different rooms because of the high demand.
The staff here were always always friendly and helpful. The location is perfect, right under the alhambra and you can walk everywhere. Cozy and clean and comfortable.
If you feel like going grand deluxe, room 301 is beautiful and has a little balcony looking straight up at the Alhambra.

As soon as I found Hotel Zaguan del Darro on the internet, I knew it was where I wanted to stay in Granada. Driving into the centre of Granada was difficult with roadworks and main streets closed to general traffic. There is a new camara system that takes a photo of the car if you enter any of the roads where you are not meant to go. It is virtually impossible to get to the public parking stations without passing a camera. To avoid being fined, you need to ask the hotel to advise the local police that you are staying at the hotel. Also, if you get the hotel to stamp your parking ticket, you will get a small discount on the daily parking rate. Pack lightly as it is quite a walk from the parking to the hotel. A bag on wheels may help but it can be a bit bumpy down the cobble stone streets. We were initially a little shocked to find we had the room over the bar but we did not hear any noise from below at all. Usually, I would not choose to pay the extra for a room with a view but when we booked there was no choice and it was nice to be able to look up and down the picturesque street and river as well as up the the Alhambra.

Room Tip: Each room has its own character. Both rooms on the first floor overlooked the street and were fine a...
