A delightful old hotel building (I think it was once the Grand Hotel judging from some old photos in the lobby area) but interiors have clearly recently been refurbished to a high standard by NH Hoteles and it is in a great location right in the Centre of the City on the Puerta Reale, five minutes stroll from the Cathedral and Royal Chapel and the Moroccan quarter. The Alhambra Palace is a 5 euro taxi away, its not that far but its all up a very steep hill! If arriving by car others have said it can be confusing but it is actually reasonably simple - leave the A44 motorway at exit 129km and take the sign for “Centro” and just keep going straight up the hill for a mile or so. After 2 or 3 traffic lights you will be greeted with a large No Entry sign, “Except for Buses and Taxis”, and a warning that Cameras control this road and penalty notices will be automatically issued warnings etc, however at the bottom of sign in small letters it says “except for access to hotels” (in Spanish), so you can ignore the No Entry and keep going up until you get to a roundabout. You will see a Burger King (quite discreet signage in windows only)on the left and the Hotel is right opposite on the right , but you can’t park at the front (even to unload) so turn right at the hotel entrance and then go down a block to the first traffic light and turn right again and then down another block and turn right again following signs to Parking Victoria (basically you are coming back to the side of the front of the hotel), however just before you get back to the front again there is another No Entry sign a few yards before the parking entrance which you can by then see is on your right, but again you are allowed to ignore it to get to the Parking! Once parked there is a lift that takes you direct to the hotel lobby. Be sure to show Reception your parking ticket and get them to log your car registration so you don’t get a Penalty ticket from the auto cameras you have just ignored!! NB Car park costs about 20 euros a day and hotel doesn’t control it so you have to pay separately. The standard room we booked was excellent, pretty newly refurbished and with a great view over the main square area. Good sized double bed, large French style windows overlooking the main road but no balcony. The double galzing is good and keeps out the traffic noise on the whole and the air conditioning is good and effective. The room has a desk unit to work at or to use as a dressing table (but no mirror over). The mini bar is below (if you purchase their two night weekend extender package you get breakfast and the contents of the reasonably well stocked mini bar thrown in (they don’t refill it on the second day however and no wine, only three spirits miniatures and three beers plus plenty of water and soft drinks, a Kitkat chocolate bar and a packet of crisps!!). There is a reasonable amount of open hanging space (certainly fine for a short stay) with safe etc. The bathroom was newly refurbished but only a decent walk in shower (no bath but the shower was good one). Fairly minimal eco friendly fruit flavoured shower gel and shampoo . The hotel had run out of soap the day we arrived however which wasn’t great but they provided extra shower gel. On day two an orange flavoured bar of soap appeared but whilst just about adequate it had totally worn out by the next day so you can imagine how thin it was to start with....not a huge problem but a niggly thing when the rest of the product was pretty good and at a very reasonable rate for a city centre hotel. Free wifi also provided works in room and public areas (get vouchers from reception as required). The free service is fairly basic but fine for emails and general surfing. There is a faster business option available but that is chargeable. Breakfast each day was terrific with a great choice and hot dishes such as omelettes and fried, poached and scrambled eggs with bacon , sausages available to order which was great as resolved the normal stone cold buffet experience seen elsewhere! Friendly and helpful staff despite hotel being full on the first night. Top Spanish football team were also staying so front of hotel a bit crowded with autograph hunters on the Sunday morning when they left but this didnt detract in any way.
