“Worst place we've ever stayed”
Reviewed 7 June 2010

On the basis of the review we stayed here for three nights. The owner, Manuel, could not have been more unpleasant throughout our stay. He made it an utter misery.
(details further down if you're interested)
Our room was not clean - there was thick dust on the shelves. The magazine in it was from 1987!!
The place is hard to find and a long steep walk up to the Alhambra, and a long steep walk down into town.
We were given a long lecture on arrival on the rules - no food or drink to be brought into the hotel, the key always to be left when we went out so he could 'control it etc. We thought fine - it's his house. On our first morning, we elected not to have breakfast (an additional 8euros each) and instead made ourselves a cup of tea, which we were informed we could, at a cost of 2 euros each. When we returned later, Manuel, pounced on us in a fury. How could we make tea and distrub the guests? We explained that the rooms were deserted when we made tea, and we had disturbed noone. He said he was removing the privilege and from now on, we could only make tea before 7am and after 11.30am. We were quite shocked and said we wouldn't dream of distrubing others if they were there, but he shooed us away.
I was very shaken by his aggressive outburst and temper and my husband later went down to try to calm the waters, as it is very stressful staying in a hotel when the owner is like this. At this point, Manuel claimed not to understand English.
Later, we were leaving to go out and another guest asked Manuel to open the gate for her. He would not as he was busy with something else. When I tried to open it for her with my key, he shouted that it was his house and he chose when people went out.
We became like ghosts trying to sneak in and out to avoid any further unpleasantness, and were nervous of doing anything.
I won't say more. Just stay somewhere else. This place left such a bad taste in our mouths, when everyone else we met was so kind.

to be greeted warmly by manuel, the fantastic proprietor was a hint that the stay was going to be special. it was may and the citrus trees and other flowers were in bloom. as soon as i walked through the gate the scent hits you and made me swoon. the carmen was lovely and peaceful, impeccably maintained with a tranquil fountain on the deck and then you see the views, the sprawling valley of granada and the gorgeous sierra nevada mountains. they were breathtaking. as if this was not enough, a steamy hot shower awaited us. we were treated to a lovely breakfast every morning and there was good conversation to be had all around if you wanted it. lets not forget that the Alhambra is a neighbor. there is free reliable wifi if you need to be connected. go here if you love spain. go here if you would like to fall in love with spain.

This was such a good find, it is a 5 minute walk to the Al hambra, so much better than the garrish Al Hambra Palace hotel. Will admit it is hard to find, but once you know where you are, its sheer bliss. Easy accessiblity to the centre, there are minivans that pick you up right from outside of the Al hambra palace ( which is a two minute walk up from Carmen) and wll take you to the plaza nuevo (where everything is). the breakfast was just nice and homely, Manuel who runs the place with his wife was especially helpful. I would go back and stay here in a hearbeat!

The view on the City of Granada and to the mountain were phantastic. However, the bedroom and bathroom looked already a bit tired. We had booked a room for two night. The first night the room felt very cold as if not used for a long time. We could hardly sleep the first night, since the bed felt damp. Breakfast was standard. We found out that the rack rate for our rooms was actually 12 % below the room rate we had been quoted when booking the room! When enquiring whether this was actually a mistake, we were told that we had made the booking with hotel booking agency and that the costs for this would not be paid by the hotel. When booking the room there was absolutely no indication that a fee was charged by the booking agency and reviewing all our papers we did not find any indication. Anyway we felt ripped off and the owner of the bed&breakfast hotel insisted, that this was our fault because we had not made a booking with him directly!! Anyway, not a place we would ever go to again.

All the Tripadvisor reviews of Carmen de la Alcubilla del Caracol seemed too good to be true, but our 3 days with Manuel in his lovely hotel confirmed them correct. We were a little concerned at its location, as the pre-booked taxi took us up through increasingly narrower and steeper calles, but on our arrival we realised that we were staying in a most picturesque part of Granada with fabulous views to the Sierra Nevada. We discovered next day that we were only 10 minutes walk from the Alhambra one way, and 10 minutes walk the other to the centre of the old town making it the most superb location. Our host Manuel was as hospitable as other reviews had mentioned with excellent English (our Spanish is woeful) and at all times most helpful and obliging. He parked our colleagues car and insisted in carrying the luggage even though we were happy to do it ourselves. The rooms were spacious and nicely appointed, with small but very serviceable en-suites and a small private balcony from which to enjoy the great views. Fresh orange juice, a selection of ham, cheese and breads plus good coffee made breakfast a light but enjoyable meal and was a good start to the day which usually included a fair bit of tapas and other more substantial meals. We were very sad to leave, knowing that rest of our accommodation in Spain was the standard hotel chain style and without the very personable Manuel to greet us. Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Initially I looked at this hotel because we were doing the unthinkable and driving into Granada. I liked that it was not in the downtown area and we could park our car and walk both to the Alhambra and to the city center. But, even without the PERFECT location (even for those without a car), I would choose to stay at this lovely upscale bed & breakfast again. The inn is beautifully situated on a hillside overlooking the city. The gardens, filled with orange trees, are really an oasis and we spent a few hours on the patio, a perfect respite after having spent all morning at the the Alhambra. Our bedroom had the same view and it was lovely to wake up to. Manuel was the perfect host, giving us detailed instructions as to how to walk to the Alhambra, personalized restaurant and other sightseeing recs, and directions as to how to get back to Madrid. Breakfast consisted of several different breads, ham, cheese, yogurt, juice, fruit and the BEST coffee of our trip! The fruit bowl is always available (gratis) and there are drinks for purchase at other times of the day. Another important thing was the free wi-fi throughout the house.

This is just the kind of place that we like to stay - where you really are staying in someone's house, it is so personal, but also so peaceful. We enjoyed talking with the different travelers who were also there. It was, by far, our FAVORITE hotel of our trip.

We stayed at the Carmen for a couple of nights last May as part of a trip around Spain. This hotel was definitely the best of our trip; the reviews on TA certainly are accurate. The only difficulty we had was getting to the house - our cab driver had no idea where it was, and had to talk to several people to find the hotel. It is located on a small lane, with not ideal access, so it's probably better if you don't have large bags. From the moment we arrived, Manuel treated us amazingly, suggesting places to go and restaurants to try. We had booked La Torre, which is located on the top of the building with an amazing balcony with views over the city. The room was quiet, relatively large, and very comfortable. The hotel was located fairly close to the Alhambra, although it is an uphill walk to get there. But as young couple, that was not a problem for us.
