“Comfortable friendly hotel, uninspiring location”
Reviewed 28 April 2009

Our primary visit to Granada was to visit the Alhambra, so I chose the Macia Real because it appeared to be relatively close to the site without being prohibitively expensive. However, it turned out to be situated on a ring road 2 km or so from anywhere, so we had to get taxis to get anywhere interesting. A taxi to the Alhambra cost just under €5, and around €7 or €8 to get into the centre of town.
There is a city bus service apparently but we weren't there long enough to suss it out. The open-topped tourist bus stops very close by, so it would be a good idea if you are sight-seeing to get a 24 or 48 hour ticket (€18) and use it to get into town, up to the Alhambra etc. Not sure if it runs during the evening though.

The hotel catering was outside our budget but there is an excellent cafe next door which opens at 7.30 am for breakfast. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, the beds were comfortable and the swimming pool looked great but it was too cold to try it out. There is an Arab Bath/spa attached to the hotel, which looked very tempting but again was out of our price range.

We accidently booked to the Macia Real de la Alhambra instead of Gran via.
i think it's the best mistake we did during the honeymoon.
When we got to the hotel we were in shock, we couldn't believe such a beautiful hotel will charge such a price, we had to ask the receptionist twice....
I can't even try to explain how amazing every single member of the hotel staff is, someone's doing a wonderful job at picking them.
they were all so nice, attentive, and patient. we asked many weird questions (we're jewish and it was the holy week, we wanted to understand what we saw...) and we were answered every single question with a smile, perfect explenation and when they didn't know they returned after a while with an answer.
after that being said, it's importent to say the hotel is located in a very secluded area, it's close to the alhambra but you still need to take a but, so it doesn't metter if you take it from the centre of the city or from the hotel....if you're with a car - go there!
if not....i'm not sure i'd recommend, even though we decided to stay longer then we originally booked....

First impressions were impressive but it didn't really live up to them. We stayed for a week and the air-conditioning didn't work in the whole time; after complaining twice I gave up as I didn't sense anybody really cared. We also asked to sit outside next to the pool one afternoon but were told we couldn't, even though the temperature was in the 20s.

On the plus side the hotel is spotlessly clean throughout and we had no trouble parking close by - the receptionist advised us that payng for hotel parking wasn't really necessary as the streets were safe. Being a bit out of town takes the hassle out of finding the hotel and the bus into Granada is only Euro 1.20, although most of the time we walked (about 35 minutes). There's a restaurant next door (head away from town) which is a bit pricey to use everynight but the food and service there were good.

The biggest disappointment was lack of atmosphere at the hotel. It must have been pretty busy, being Semana Santa while we were there, but the couple of times we went to the bar we were alone. Even then, getting served took an age, although that's as much a feature of Spain as this hotel.

Despite this, we still had a wonderful time, as Granada and the surrounding region have so much to offer. The Sierra Nevada mountains, quiet resorts on the Costa del Sol and Seville can all be done in a day trip, but Granada itself is the star attraction.

I would just like to add to all the good reviews!

Rooms- modern, clean, comfortable beds, modern bathroom with decent toiletries. We were lucky to get a good view too.

Parking- secure underground parking, lift up to hotel reception/rooms. Good price-cheaper than many other hotels we've stayed in. It was actually already included in the rate we paid (£75 per night, including parking and breakfast-amazing!).

Location- easy to find by car (if you follow the instructions given by other reviewers rather than maps or satnav!). Nothing nearby, but there's a bus stop right outside the hotel and buses take you direct either to the centre of Granda (5 mins, c.7 Euros) or to the Alhambra (3/4 mins/ c.5 Euros). If you do the night tour of the Alhambra, it's easy to find a taxi from there back to the hotel. We were glad that we didn't walk, as it was along a deserted main road...even though it was downhill all the way back!

Food- breakfast was fine. If you're veggie, don't rely on the hotel restaurant or even bar snacks, as the choice was even more limited than most places! We rarely eat in hotels anyway, though, and Granada is close enough for this not to be a problem.

Other- free internet in reception, helpful staff.

We are planning to return to Granada and will definitely stay here again.

We stayed for 2 nights in March, paying €65 per night for room only. This is a typical international chain hotel, so if you want quaint, traditional old world charm and family atmosphere, this isn't for you. But for the price you get a large room with typical ensuite facilities, helpful front desk and quiet location despite the proximity to a busy ring road. Easy to find for the nervous driver - a great relief after Cordoba - and with loads of free on street parking, so you can save the €8 per night on site parking fee and put it towards your meal budget! Breakfast was very expensive at €10 per head, so we went round the corner to the Hotel Albero which provided an excellent continental breakfast for €3 - an absolute steal. On the second morning we prepared our own breakfast in our room as we were leaving early. Dinners are also expensive, but why would you want to eat there with the whole of Granada to explore? Although the hotel is on the edge of town, there is a bus every 10 mins to the town centre from outside the hotel, cost €1.20, and this runs until 23.30 - incredibly convenient. Don't even think of taking the car in to town! The nicest area to explore is the Albaicin, on the hill directly opposite the cathedral where you get off the bus, and with fabulous views of the Alhambra from higher up. Car parking at the Alhambra is expensive - priced on a "per minute" basis (I'm not joking) - and a half day would be in the region of €8, so either get the bus, or walk up the back lane from Puerto Nueva in town after spending the morning exploring the Albaicin - about a 20 min leisurely uphill walk.

Overall, a comfortable, quiet and value for money location. I would definitely stay there again, but also maybe check out the Hotel Albero round the corner if all you want is somewhere quiet to put your head down for the night. Rooms are €20 per night cheaper and they are well reviewed on Trip Advisor, and if they are as good value as the breakfasts they should be great.

As many have stated, the hotel is about 2km from the entrance to Alhambra. The walk is 25 minutes or so. However, the walk is up a steep hill and alongside a busy road...be prepared. The hotel is not walking distance from anywhere else (ie restaurants) that we could tell but you can take a bus or taxi cheaply into the city center.

Easy to describe its location (after you've found it)! Follow the southern ring road for Alhambra AND Sierra Nevada until you have to choose one or the other just before a tunnel. Choose Alhambra and the hotel is directly opposite as you come out of the tunnel to a traffic island.

We had a package deal which included breakfast and free parking - excellent value.

Two personal tips - don't take your car to the Alhambra a taxi is cheaper than the parking fee. Although we had problems buy a bono ticket from the bus driver for 10 euros giving yuou 16 trips at virtually half price.

The restaurant is pricey but nice. Beware its Spanish we (Surprise, surprise) typical but nice Spanish food served in Spanish style.

Granada seems happy to depend on the Alhambra for tourism. We have visited many Spanish cities and felt that Granada city itself is not too welcoming to "Foreigners". If your Spanish is not fluent - tough!

If you like a drink the city is a fair way on the bus - we ate in the hotel.

We found the staff very helpful. In what we felt was a cold spell we certainly didn't miss air conditioning.
